Cambridgeshire Women’s League Cup

This weekend in Cambridgeshire the woman’s football action was largely focused on the League Cup with 8 ties from the 2nd Round taking place the 16 sides vying for a place in the quarter finals. 

  Last season’s beaten finalists were at home in the 2nd Round in an all Premiership clash Netherton United Ladies hosting Cambridge University Women. A close contest the sides both scoring in the regular 90 minutes Emily Johnson for Netherton as early as the 8th minute. Cambridge University levelling the scores the tie headed into extra-time the visitors going on the score the winning goal and progress.

  Another all Premiership clash saw St Ives Town Ladies paired with Cambridge City Ladies Development in the 2nd Round of the League Cup. A tight contest between the sides the scores level at half-time at 1-1 it was St Ives Town who went onto score the winning goal in the 2nd half and progress with a 2-1 win Katherine Speed and Frances Chapman with the home sides goal. Kayleigh Whitehead scoring the goal in the 1st half for Cambridge City.

   A 3rd all Premiership tie in the 2nd Round of the League Cup saw Park Ladies drawn at home to Newmarket Town Ladies. The visitors reaching the quarter finals scoring 6 goals with 6 different names on the scoresheet. Cindy Ponder Antonia Smith Sarah O’Rourke, Chloe Slater, Amanda Stacey and Brooke Wickens. The final score 6-1.

Elsewhere their were no banana skins for the other Premiership sides left in the competition both March Town United Ladies and ICA Sports Ladies at home to Championship opponents. A big win for March Town United hosting St Ives Town Ladies new Development side. Shannon Shaw netting a hat-trick in the match there were braces for both Shannon Kelly and Emma Frost. With Charley Miller Lyndsey Churchyard and Naomi McGarvie all getting a goal each in a 10-2 win. Jade Carpenter and Megan Stow both scoring in the 2nd half for St Ives Town.

 ICA Sports Ladies were hosting Wisbech Town Ladies in the 2nd Round of the League Cup the Championship North side having started the season well. The Premiership side proving too strong however running out 5-1 winners, thanks to goals from, Jessica Farchica Hayley Jones, Megan Purnell and a brace from Donna Nicholls. Sophie Gutteridge getting the goal for Wisbech Town.

Three 2nd Round ties in the League Cup pitting Championship sides against each other. South v North in 2 ties with Isleham United Ladies hosting Hungate Rovers Ladies not much separating the sides a single goal winning the tie for Isleham United Rachael Turner with the match winner.

  Fulbourn Bluebirds were hosting Wisbech St Mary Ladies a good contest between the sides 5 goals in the match the win going to the visitors as Wisbech St Mary Ladies edged it 3-2 to reach the quarter finals. Lauren Laws netting 2 goals with Amy Magnus also getting a goal. Joanne Woods scoring both of the goals for Fulbourn.

   In the all Championship South tie it was an early kick off on Sunday with Cambridge Rangers hosting league leaders Histon Ladies Reserves the visitors carrying on their great league form into the cup reaching the quarter finals with a 3-1 victory. Amanda Binge scoring twice, with Philippa Hayden-Evans also getting a goal. 

The quarter finals are scheduled to be played Sunday 3rd December and the line up is as follows: –

Wisbech St Mary Ladies v Cambridge University Women

Isleham United Ladies v Newmarket Town Ladies

Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship North

One league game played at the weekend in the Championship North between the two bottom sides Pinchbeck United Ladies hosting Orton Ranger Ladies both sides still in search of their 1st point of the season they contested a 7 goal thriller with Pinchbeck United coming out on top 4-3 winners to get that 1st all important win under their belts and move off the bottom of the table in the process. Caitlin Burke, Alexandra Gomes, Chloe Gray and Britney Weaver their goalscorers.
