Cambridgeshire – Sunday 30th October

It’s in Cambridgeshire where we have lost the 3rd club this week, sad news as Great Paxton Ladies disappear from the league listings. New this season started with a bang winning 6-0 at home but haven’t featured since. Hopefully they will reappear in the future and their players are getting a game somewhere.

Cambridgeshire Women’s League Cup

 The football action in Cambridgeshire at the weekend returned to the league cup a new format this season a group stage early on with 8 groups the winner of each progressing to the quarter finals.

 In Group A it Premiership side ICA Sports Ladies played out a high scoring draw at home to Championship North pace setters, Wisbech St Marys Ladies. Carmen Herridge plus a brace for Rhian Leonard gave ICA Sports 3 goals, were matched by Wisbech St Mary with Lauren Laws netting a brace scoring in each half with Sian Peeling also on target in the 1st halve to see the points shared with a 3-3 draw.

In Group B following Great Paxton Ladies withdrawal both their opponents, Cambridge United WFC Reserves and Cambridge City Ladies Development are awarded home wins and having played each other with a 2-1 win for Cambridge United WFC Reserves it’s they who will progress to the quarter finals.

Two games in Group C a big win at home for both Riverside Rovers Reserves and Cambridge University Women on Sunday. Riverside Rovers Reserves were at home playing fellow Championship South side Orton Rangers Ladies. Amy Magnus and Kayleigh Pilbeam both scoring a hat-trick Jessica Hall and Anna Haun and Zoe Lenton also on the scoresheet with a 9-0 victory. Premiership side, Cambridge University Women also won scoring 9 at home beating Championship South side St Ives Rangers Ladies. The lower league opponents going 1-0 up before Cambridge University when on to score to lead 3-1 at half time with goals from Kate Ross, Bianca Wilcox and Martha Geiger. Nina Coyle opened the scoring 2nd half for the home side. Rosa Davis-Jones and Sophie D’Angelo scoring to make it 6-1 and own goal Ross and Davies-Jones getting another goal each winning 9-1.

Both matches were postponed in Group D. In Group E Bar Hill Ladies from the Premiership beat Championship South side Cambridge Rangers 3-2 to top the group with 3 wins to advance to the quarter finals.

   Group F is the only group to feature 2 Premiership sides both winning at the weekend. Newmarket Town Ladies were away playing Championship South side Isleham United Ladies the sides were 0-0 at the break before the Premiership side went on to score early 2nd half Joeli Kirby with the goal on 48 minutes, Kirby adding another goal on 65 minutes with Nadine Basson scoring a 3rd goal in the closing minutes to seal a 3-0 win. St Ives Town Ladies were at home on Sunday playing Championship South side both Amy Seymour-Shove and Sasha Smith scored a brace in a 4-1 victory, Seema Grewal with the goal for Fulbourn. Both Newmarket and St Ives Town now have 6 points at the top of the group face each other on the 27th November to decide who will progress to the quarter finals.

Premiership side Bourne Ladies suffered a heavy defeat in Group G against Championship North opponents Swineshead Institute Ladies. 4 goals each for Kirsty Hewitt and Ellie Spendlow, puts Swineshead in a great position at the top of the group with on round of games left. Also in Group G Championship North sides Thurlby Tigers and Boston United Ladies played each other the latter matching Swineshead’s tally winning 8-0.

Park Ladies recorded their 1st win in Group H, a home win against Champoinship South side Newmarket Town Ladies Reserves. The Premiership side winning the game 6-1 with goals from, Chantelle Abraham, Amy Newell, Erin Powell, Claire Thomas and Jenna Thurtle plua an own goal to seal the win. The game between March Town United Ladies and P&L Motors Diamonds was postponed.
