Youngs Park the venue for today’s fixture and the first time I’ve been back there since the redeveloped site was opened in 2016. A new housing development close by easier to get to than I remember, a large carpark a large clubhouse with bar and refreshments, beside the main pitch, lots of space for additional practice pitches, a great sporting facility. The weather a pretty dull picture, gloomy and overcast, not too cold mind

Full time Aylsham Ladies 1-8 Sprowston Ladies

A comprehensive win for Sprowston Ladies in the finish reaching the last 8 of the League Cup, a great win to start 2019. Strong from the start an early goal setting them on their way pressed well inside their opponents half. Raced into a 4-0 lead, Aylsham out of sorts poor in the first half hour got a life line from the penalty spot 4-1 at the break needed an early goal 2nd half and despite starting well it didn’t come. Sprowston always ready to counter having soaked up the pressure added a further 4 goals. A confidence boosting result for the visitors the opposite for Aylsham not the start to the year they were looking for but no doubt out of character, know alot of these players from watching them before are better and will regather and bounce back.

Women’s Football East – Player of the Match

Onto the first Women’s Football East – Player of the Match award for 2019. From the outset I had an early contender. Sprowston dominated the first half, soaked up some pressure 2nd half before ending strong, Vicky Leyer pushing for it towards the end the award today however goes to Abby Hutchin made some great runs from midfield to join the attack get ahead of play early on and maintained that throughout the game a constant threat adding a goal too.

Good to get a game in after a month and thrust me I needed it too after the weekend I’ve had, the best medicine great to see both teams in action. My thanks as always for the help with the teams. The draw for the Norfolk Ladies League Cup quarter finals will be made soon keep an eye on the @NWGFL twitter account for all the details.

Half-time Wymondham Town Ladies 0-0 Aylsham FC Ladies

A 1st half of few chances, two sides that are fairly well balanced both competitive and defending well no one is getting any time on the ball and the final passes are rarely finding their mark. Plenty of players out there that can turn it on change the game with one move of quality, but so far it’s been the defenders who have been on top. Aylsham stay out on the pitch during half-time Wymondham back in their dressing room make changes at the start of the 2nd half Laura Wiseman who has just been selected for the GB Deaf Women’s World Cup squad this summer along with team mate Gemma Sanders both coming on Wiseman up top replacing Sally Hammerton who took a knock clattering into Hibbert at the very end of the 1st half. Wiseman receiving the ball from Hammerton in the centre does well to put the ball out left with Holloway looking to steal in behind, has a couple of yards on Bird as the defender goes after her has the legs to get back on her tackle to win the ball before she can carry it into the area.
Hammerton passes the ball out to Holloway wide left looks to play the diagonal ball early send Wiseman in on goal inside the box, Lacey clears it comes back out to Holloway who delivers the ball ball into the box looking for Collins racing in near post, Hibbert has the ball in her gloves a fraction before the striker arrives knocks it free, falling inside the six yard box ,can’t get onto the end of it as Aylsham get back to hook it away.
Hamilton-Rout makes a great save in the Wymondham goal from a Charlton corner swung in from the left, curling in towards the near post the keeper pushes it away across the goal and out the other side for another corner. Another great delivery driven in low Burr-Walpole making the run towards the ball 10 yards out complete misses her shot the ball rolling into the crowd beyond is cleared.   Holding the ball up high on the right, Hills gets help from Michaela England knocking the ball back to her she sweeps the cross in towards the far post area with Burr-Walpole racing into the area to meet it from the left, connecting on the volley sends the strike high over the bar. Leading one nil Wymondham make a change bringing off a striker, Collins and sending Louise Hamilton-Rout back on as they look to defend the lead with 20 minutes left to play. A chance to make it 2-0 as again Wiseman is put through from midfield to have a run at the Aylsham goal right side shoots early putting the ball wide of Hibbert, sees it roll wide of the goal too.

A free kick to Wymondham on the right just outside the box Cantwell over the ball plays it into the area, Sanders turns the ball towards goal is cleared inside the six yard box comes straight back to Sanders who headers the ball over the crossbar. Good hold up play on the left between Wiseman and Holloway the cross is squared along the face of the area into Louise Hamilton-Rout, Lacey keeping close to her she  manages to get the shot away Hibbert parries the ball away from goal.Double change for Aylsham with Burr-Walpole and Kelly coming off to be replaced by Woodward and Keira Squires. The game is moving into the final 5 minutes.

High ball up into the box by Aylsham from Ferdani, Woodward is under it looks favourite to get there, Newcombe and Cossey do well to get in front of her and the ball smuggle it back to their keeper. Wymondham break the ball with Holloway on the left comes away with the ball riding a challenge pushing on goes to shoot 20 yards out putting the ball up into the air drops down into the side netting at the near post.

Aylsham FC Ladies captain Vicki Bird powering in the header to make it 1-1!
GOAL! What a finish to the game. Aylsham were a goal down with less than 5 minutes left on the clock, pull it level, then would you believe it they take the lead! The goal coming from an seemingly innocuous free kick given away inside the Wymondham half in front of the centre circle right side, Charlton over the ball, decides to take on the strike a beauty too hits it hard flying towards goal a little swerve on it Hamilton-Rout can’t get anything on it as it sails past her into the top corner to send Aylsham into delirium as they all race over to and Charlton is buried under everyone 2-1.
No more than a couple of minutes left, Sally Hammerton and Collins are immediately sent back on gone from a winning to losing position in the matter of minutes conceding from 2 set-pieces they attack pile forwards Aylsham defend the ball lifted into the box is launched up the pitch Wymondham have no time to come again as the final whistle blows and Aylsham FC Ladies pull off the spectacular winning the NWGFL League Cup winning 2-1.   Trip the The FDC this Sunday to watch the 2015/16 Final of the Norfolk Women’s County Cup between Aylsham FC Ladies and Thorpe United Ladies.

There will be a new name engraved on the trophy too after today’s final as the competition moves into it’s 6th year. From it’s conception in the 2010/11 season the Norfolk Women’s County Cup has been dominated by Norwich City Ladies playing their football in the FAWPL South East Division One winning 4 finals in a row up until last season when they didn’t enter the competition that allowed a chance for a new name to lift the cup last season, Acle United Ladies playing in Eastern Region Premier Division. Now it will be won by a side playing within the county football league set-up in Norfolk itself with both Aylsham FC Ladies and Thorpe United Ladies playing in Norfolk Women’s Division One.

Road to the Final

There were 3 ties to be played in the 1st round of the Norfolk Women’s County Cup with the rest given a bye to the 2nd round, played back in October Aylsham FC Ladies were handed a difficult looking 1st round tie at home to North Walsham Angels Ladies one of the title favourites in Division Two. Turned out to be a thrilling encounter with 12 goals scored during the 90 minutes level at 6-6 going into extra-time Aylsham FC Ladies found a bit extra and went on to win 9-6 to reach the next round.
In the 2nd Round were at home again taking on fellow Norfolk Division One side Long Stratton Ladies, much more comfortable this time around winning 4-0 to make it into the quarter finals. 4-0 was the winning scoreline again on home soil again as they were drawn against Norfolk Division Three side Toftwood Ladies. Home again in the semi-finals taking on Norfolk Division Two side Red Rose Ladies won 3-1 to reach their 1st Norfolk Women’s County Cup Final. An attacking side are rarely involved in low scoring games grinding out 1-0 wins isn’t their forte. Goals can come from anywhere in the side, but with 30 goals to her name in all competitions this season striker Abbie Charlton is one to watch. One of two finals for Aylsham FC Ladies this season as they have also reached the final of the Norfolk Women’s League Cup
Thorpe United Ladies were also in action in the 1st Round an away drawn against the early pace setters in Norfolk Division Three, Harleston Ladies made short work of them racking up a 13-0 victory to progress to the 2nd Round. Different story in the 2nd Round drawn at home against fellow Division One side Wymondham Town Ladies, both sides amongst the favourites for the league title, Thorpe United Ladies edged the contest by a single goal to reach the quarter finals.
At home again in the quarter finals drawn against Division Two side Stalham Town Ladies, progressed through to the semi-finals courtesy of a 5-0 victory to set up a repeat of last season’s final as they were drawn at home against Acle United Ladies. A tough test however Thorpe United Ladies celebrated at the final whistle again winning by a single goal to reach their 3rd successive Norfolk Women’s County Cup Final. Have made 3 final appearances to date and come so close last season missing out to Acle United Ladies in a penalty shootout will be determined to get their hands on the trophy and not another runner-up medal this time around their 3rd successive final appearance.

Half-time Aylsham FC Ladies 0-2 Thorpe United Ladies
A lively 1st half, competitive as expected from both sides, Aylsham started very well causing Thorpe problems closing the ball down and sending it into Woodward and Charlton early, the defences have down well for the most part, Bird and Lacey in particular for Aylsham, Anderson and Ford with some timely tackles for Thorpe. Two errors have led to the goals Aylsham have conceded. 2-0 down they are no where near out of it, the next goal is crucial.
Aylsham have kick off 2nd half, in front of a good sized crowd that has come to watch the final. Aylsham’s Debbie Kelly plays the ball up to Ferdani the ball is sent up high into the Thorpe area is dealt with by Shannon Miles. Aylsham have an early free kick out on the left half way inside the Thorpe half the ball is sent into the area Andrews coming for the ball spills it comes out to Woodward on the left side inside the six yard box, doesn’t make clean contact with the shot is on target near post however Miles is the play who gets across to defend the post and kick the shot clear.

Hills has made a difference since coming on attacking on the right side, a strong player hard to shake off the ball, takes the ball on coming inside driving for the box, Anderson stands firm offering no way through. A fantastic chance comes Aylsham’s way as they hit Thorpe on the counter attack Charlton and Woodward both timing their runs to perfection spring the offside trap as the ball is put over the top, the ball landing in Woodwards path, Andrews has to commit comes towards her, Woodward lifts her shot over her from the edge of the area and is left kicking the ground in frustration as she sees her shot sail over the crossbar.

Burr-Walpole carries the ball up the left side for Aylsham lifting her cross into the area everyone has gambled near post as the ball flues over every one landing far post no one is their to attack the ball with little under 10 minutes left to play. Can’t get hold of the ball, Thorpe’s Ford and Anderson getting onto the end of any through ball, Woodward returns to the field. Russell with the ball on the left side for Thorpe plays a great delivery into the box Lake is their under challenge with Smith manages to get a shot away puts it straight into Vanston’s gloves again.
Into injury time, Thorpe try to play it into the corner keep Aylsham quiet, but they’re having none of it, the ball is played back to Gillespie in the centre looks to play the long ball into the box for Woodward and Charlton to attack, bounces trough to the keeper. Thorpe get the ball up the other end and win a corner kick, don’t go short playing it into the area Russell gets her head to the ball but can’t direct the shot on target.
