FAWNL Cup
A mixture of league and cup action across the FAWNL this Sunday. Two games taking place in the 3rd Round of the FAWNL Cup, a place in the quarter finals of the competition the prize.
Was an all South East Division One affair with Cambridge United WFC’s long run of cup matches continuing with an away trip of AFC Wimbledon Ladies, this Sunday. A 1-1 draw between the sides in the same fixture on the opening day of the season, Wimbledon have pushed on up the league since into 3rd position now a point behind 2nd placed Billericay. reaching the 3rd Round of the FA Women’s Cup. A competitive game between the sides it was the hosts who took the lead scoring late in the 1st half Jenny Nagle getting into the end of a free-kick to score in the 40th minute. 2 minute later Wimbledon had a 2nd Caroline Bisson sending a shot past the keeper. 2-0 the lead at half-time proved to be enough despite Cambridge pulling it back to 2-1 with a little over 10 minutes left, Emma Jenkins hitting a rebound in from a corner.
The other 3rd Round tie was an all Southern Premier Division affair with Loughborough Foxes Women travelling across to Wales to play Cardiff City Ladies in the Cup. A dramatic game that saw Cardiff City go 3-0 up before Loughborough mounted a terrific comeback to win the game 4-3 in extra time. Cardiff scoring twice late in the 1st half the 2nd from the penalty spot to lead 2-0 at the break. Went 3-0 up 7 minutes into the 2nd half. Cori Williams, Kylie Nolan and Grace Horrell credited with the goals.
Loughborough finding the woodwork with two strikes early in the 2nd period pulled it back to 3-1 just past the hour, Becky Matlock getting the goal. The game closing in on the final 10 minutes, Shauna Chambers having already hit the crossbar hits a screamer from distance to make it 3-2, a dramatic final ten minutes Loughborough finding the equalising goal 2 minutes from time Laura Dexter scoring from a free-kick on the edge of the area to send the tie into extra-time. Rebecca Knight scoring what would prove to be the winning goal 6 minutes into extra-time heading home a corner.
3 more sides booking a place in the last 8 of the Cup this Sunday, Huddersfield Town Ladies, Blackburn Rovers Ladies and Stoke City Ladies. Hull City Ladies travel to Bolton Wanderers Ladies this Sunday whilst Chichester City Ladies v Coventry United Ladies and Plymouth Argyle Ladies v Crawley Wasps Ladies are scheduled for the New Year.
FAWNL Plate
Two ties also played in the FAWNL Plate this Sunday again the 3rd Round, Stevenage Ladies already through to the last 8 of the competition with an extra-time win over Ipswich Town Women last Sunday.
Milton Keynes Dons Ladies from the Southern Premier Division were at home in the Plate taking on Midlands Division One side Bedworth United Ladies at Stadium MK. A good start to their league campaign Bedworth 3rd in the table proved a strong opponent for Milton Keynes the sides locked a 0-0 going into the break it was the visitors who would take the lead, Jessica Lundie finding the back of the net for Bedworth in the 68th minute. Milton Keynes getting the equaliser to send the tie into extra-time, the home side going on to score the winning goal to make it through, Leah Cudone with both.
Southern Premier Division side, Gillingham Ladies were at home in the 3rd Round of the Plate taking on South West Division One side, Chesham United Ladies. Sammy Booker opening the scoring for Gillingham on 21 minutes from a corner. Was soon 2-0 with Gillingham awarded a penalty kick, Ellie Manning scoring from the spot. 2 minutes later and the hosts went 3-0 up Booker with her 2nd of the game netting from a rebound. Chesham hitting the crossbar were also denied by some good saves from Courtney Shanley. Gillingham going further ahead in the 65th minute, Breon Grant lobbing the goalkeeper to make it 4-0. Booker going on to wrap up her hat-trick in the final 12 minutes of the game Gillingham winning 5-0.
Also making it through to the last 8 of the Plate are Liverpool Feds Women, Barnsley Ladies, Middlesborough Women and Keynsham Town Ladies with Sporting Khalsa Women at home to West Bromich Albion Women in the New Year.
FAWNL South East Division One
One league game to report on this Sunday from FAWNL South East Division One a 6 pointer from the bottom of the table Norwich City Ladies hosting bottom side Luton Town Ladies. Aimee Durrant with the only goal of the 1st half giving Norwich City the lead at the break. Kathryn Stanley on target to score early in the 2nd period to give Norwich a 2-0 lead. Two further goals coming late in the game to secure the win for Norwich Abigail Tate and Rosie George both celebrating thier 1st goals for the club. Amy Summerfield scoring a late consolation for Luton. The 4-1 win taking Norwich into double figures and up into 8th place in the table.
