Cambridgeshire

It was the Cambridgeshire leagues where I was on my travels this Sunday covering a match in the Cambridgeshire Women’s League Cup for my Supporting Women’s Football Blog a 2nd round tie with Netherton Ladies taking on Cambridge City Ladies. Both Premiership sides having started the season well looked a juicy tie to go watch. A full strength Cambridge City side proved too strong for an injury and depleted Netherton Ladies side who lost 2-0 with a goal scored in both halves, by Carla Penny and captain Grace Stanley, to read all of the match action click on the link below to take you to the blog.

Netherton United Ladies v Cambridge City Ladies

Cambridge City Ladies opponents in the quarter finals of the league cup were also playing their 2nd round tie this weekend and they will be Bar Hill Women after they beat Swineshead Institute Ladies 6-0 at home Anna Jephson helping herself to 4 goals, the others from Nadine Wejkins and Gemma Clare.

With Cambridge City Ladies and Bar Hill Women in league cup action ICA Sports Ladies capitalised to climb into 2nd place in the Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership table with a 3-2 home win against Huntingdon Town Ladies, two of their goals from Lorna Hart, Huntingdon Town’s 2 goals scored by Laura Spaxman and Hollie Anne Dare. Newmarket Town Ladies finally have a point on the board securing a 0-0 draw at home against Cambridge University Women who have had a contrasting opening 3 games to the league season conceding 11 in their 1st winning 9-2 2nd time around. A good point earned for Newmarket Town Ladies.

In the Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship North there are new leaders following this Sunday’s results as Wisbech Town Ladies go top following a 7-0 win on the road away to bottom side Tydd St Marys Ladies still seeking their 1st points of the season. Wisbech St Marys goal scorers were, Catherine Ray, Toni Lewis and Jade Kelly.

March Town United Ladies move up into 3rd in the Championship North table following a 3-2 home win against 2nd bottom Hungate Rovers Ladies. 2 goals from Shannon Kelly and 1 from Adele Munday securing the 3 points, 2 goals from Jade Chamberlian not enough for Hungate Rovers Ladies to win their 1st points of the season. Stamford Ladies have had to wait a while to secure their 2nd win of the season were at home at the weekend like March Town United won it 3-2 against Downham Town Ladies.

In the Championship South, Milton Ladies remain top of the table, but now only on goal difference as they lost for the 1st time this season in an epic 11 goal match against 2nd placed Comberton Ladies who welcomed the leaders to their own patch emerged with the 3 points to draw level with a 6-5 win, just 2 names on the score-sheet too, Kerri Hilton-Taylor’s 6 goals for Comberton edging out the 5 scored by Kirsty Lemmon-Sparkes for Milton Ladies.

Essex

Premier Division leaders Chelmsford City Ladies weren’t in action this Sunday, the chasing pack were but none could secure 3 points to close the gap at the top. It was a meeting between 2nd and 3rd as Hullbridge Sports Ladies travelled to Runwell Hospital Ladies took a 2-1 lead into half-time but Runwell Hospital Ladies scored another goal in the 2nd half to make the final score 2-2. 4th placed Eastern Avenue were hosting bottom side Lawford Ladies who were without league point after 4 matches played, finally got one on the board after the match finished in a high scoring 4-4 draw.

Collier Row Tigers were also high scorers at the weekend move into 5th spot with the chasing pack behind Chelmsford on 10 points after they beat Hutton Ladies Reserves 13-4 away from home. Beacon Hill Rovers Ladies secured their 1st league win of the season by a high scoreline beating Walden Ladies at home by 6 goals to 3.

Well you’ve waited for it long enough wanted to know where this 40-0 win was hiding, well it’s in Essex Women’s Division One as 2nd placed Wickford Town Ladies increase their goal difference to +52 from +12 racking up 40 goals at home to new side Waltham Forest Ladies who have had a torrid start to life as a new women’s side 3 heavy defeats which isn’t great to see let’s hope they can turn things around. Wickford Town are 3 points behind leaders Harlow Town Ladies who maintain a 100% winning start to the season 6 in a row although this one was by the narrowest scoreline yet winning 5-2 away to Chigwell Ladies. Harlow Town and Wickford Town meet in the league next Sunday and if that ends goalless I’ll eat my hat.

Chelmsford City Ladies Reserves are level on points with Wickford Town in 3rd after they won 2-1 against Southend Town Ladies. Also level on points with 2nd and 3rd are 4th placed Alresford Colne Rangers who came out on top winning 7-5 at home to Valley Green Ladies.  The lead at the top of Beds & Herts Women’s Division One changes hands again this Sunday with Bishops Stortford Ladies at the summit couldn’t get the 3 points though move a point clear of previous leaders Harvesters FC who weren’t playing following a 2-2 away to Sandy Ladies who get their 1st point on the board after 4 matches played their goals from Kayleigh Bennett and Loren Ellard. Bishops Stortford’s goals scored by Elle Georgiou and Jessica Mace. Hertford Town Ladies are 2nd but like Bishops Stortford picked up a single point instead of 3 their match away to Garston Ladies ending goalless. Letchworth Garden City Eagles are up into 4th spot following their 2nd league win on the bounce a single goal away to bottom side Toddington Rovers Ladies taking the 3 points.

In Division Two, Houghton Athletic Ladies move back to the top of the table after having last weekend off and losing top spot to Sharnbrook WFC, their rivals weren’t in action this weekend. Away to Garston Ladies FC 96 needed to score 6 goals to secure the win as the hoe side netted 5 in another 11 goal encounter in the East this weekend. Emma Hawkes with 5 of the Houghton strikes with Ciara Craig netting the other goal. Woburn Lionesses have turned their season around following 2 defeats at the start of the season have now won 3 in a row to move into 3rd place in the league table, Catriona Roxburgh, Emily Saunders and Dominique Hull scoring the Woburn goals in a 3-2 away win over AFC Kempston Rovers Ladies, their 2 goals scored by Abygail Dolan and Shannon Pearson from the penalty spot.   Bedmond Ladies had started the season with 2 defeats have had to wait a whole month to play their 3rd league game, worth the wait as they recorded their 1st win of the season picking up the 3 points following a 6-2 home win over Welwyn Garden City Ladies, Molly Peters bagging herself a hat-trick with 2 more scored by Sarah Gunn, Emma Treanor also getting a goal. Claire Cranfield with both the Welwyn Garden City goals.    Another action filled Edition of The Tuesday Round-Up a per usual tried to mention as many goal scorers as I could, Essex FA like to keep them secret so if you want to spill the beans and get a mention once in a while (you have to actually score a goal mind) then let me know. Seven Edition’s in some leagues are taking shape no one is running away with it yet though, going to be plenty of twists and drama to record over the coming weeks and months looking forwards to seeing how it all unfolds, until next week thanks for reading.

The Tuesday Round-Up

The Tuesday Round-Up – Edition Six

Edition Six of The Tuesday Round-Up sees a limited programme of league fixtures across the East of England this past Sunday. Nevertheless there was plenty of football action taking place as teams dispersed back to there counties to take part in the early rounds of their respective County Cups. That means the ‘Round-Up’ isn’t as straight forward as normal as we deal with different FA outlets and sites to find the information and trust me it can vary greatly depending on what FA we are talking about. Will of course try and cover as much of the action as I can in this latest edition of The Tuesday Round-Up so let’s plunge into the action.

FAWPL Southern Division

Most FAWPL Southern Division sides won’t enter their respective County Cup competitions until the latter stages, assuming that is they have entered at all, so their was 4 fixtures that took place in the division this weekend. Brighton & Hove Albion WFC extended their lead at the top of the table and continue to remain unbeaten taking the points off one of their main title rivals Portsmouth Ladies in the process. Kate Natkiel gave the visitors the lead on 7 minutes, didn’t take Portsmouth long to hit back Uni Umotong pulling the scores level 3 minutes later. 1-1 at half time, Lucy Somes gave Brighton a 2-1 lead 15 minutes into the 2nd half and Charlotte Gurr made it 3-1 on 80 minutes. Portsmouth pulled a goal back in injury time with new signing Emma Sherwood, one of the former West Ham United players who walked out of the club over a dispute earlier this month coming off the bench to make her debut getting a goal at the death. Final score 2-3 to Brighton.

Brighton open up a 4 point lead at the top over 2nd placed Cardiff City Ladies as they were beaten on their own patch by Coventry United Ladies 0-3 all the goals coming mid way through the 2nd half Cristina Torkildsen with the 1st goal on 64 minutes with Helen Dermody hitting a quick fire brace on 73 & 75 to wrap up the 3 points lift Coventry a place into 5th with a game or two in hand on all the 4 sides above. C&K Basildon Ladies built on last weeks point at home to win at home this Sunday beating visitors Plymouth Argyle Ladies 2-1 Lily Mellors another former West Ham United player making her debut and Claire Lacey with the Basildon goals in the 1st half before they put through their own net in the 2nd half.

West Ham United Ladies were on the road this weekend looking for recover from an 8-1 battering by Charlton Athletic Women the week before was a much changed side as they took on Lewes Ladies. Took the lead through Paige Anderson-James on 22 minutes, were 2-0 up going into the break with Romina Pinna netting the 2nd goal. Lewes Ladies fought back 2nd half with Natasha Wells pulling a goal back for the home side with 10 minutes left to play. Julia Louis-Joseph coming off the bench scored from a long distance free kick as the game entered injury time to make it 2-2 to see the points shared.

FAWPL South East Division One

Crystal Palace Ladies dropped points for the 1st time this season as they drew 1-1 away to bottom side Cambridge United WFC both the goals coming in the 1st half, Roschelle Shakes bagging Crystal Palace’s goal with Cambridge United WFC’s goal coming from new signing Paige Logie. That result meant Luton Town Ladies closed the gap on Crystal Palace at the top to just 2 points as they followed up their midweek 3-1 win over Bedford Ladies with another three points at home this weekend beating Old Actonians Ladies 4-2 Natasha Fensome hit 2 with Rachel Carter and Shannon Pratt also scoring for Luton. Jessica Byrne and Natasha Cree scoring Old Actonians goals.

One other match in the league this Sunday saw Enfield Town Ladies earn the 3 points and move into the top half of the table winning 3-2 at home to Bedford Ladies. Ella Meadowcroft scored twice for Bedford to give them a 1-2 lead at half time with Regan Coleman scoring for Enfield. The home side hit back after the break to score twice through Ayse Mustafa and Sheryce Slater to earn them the 3 points.

  Eastern Region

3 matches took place in the league this weekend, Brentwood Town Ladies move up to 3rd spot after a 3-3 draw away to AFC Dunstable Ladies who pick up their 1st point of the season at the 5th attempt, Stephanie Fisher scoring twice with Amber Pearson also scoring for Dunstable, Brentwood Town’s goal scorers were, Danielle Butler, Leanne Cox and Paidamoyo Dedza. Also picking up their 1st point of the season are newly promoted Gt Wakering Rovers Ladies as they took on Gt Shelford Ladies who themselves had just a single point going into the game they drew 1-1 Natalie Shenton with their goal, Georgia Holdaway finding the back of the net for Gt Wakering.

Was a 1st win on the season in the league for Acle United Ladies who climb into 6th spot in the table following a 3-1 home win over Colchester Town Ladies who are in a poor run of form in the league dropping down the table. Acle’s goals coming from Lauren Bullard who smashed 2 into the back of the net and Jenna Thurtle. Georgia Box scored a 1st half goal for Colchester Town.

In Division One East, Writtle Ladies made it 4 wins out of 4 to stay top of the league beating Ipswich Wanderers 3-1 away from home, Courtney Clarke, Charlotte Walker and Sophie Vale with the goals for Writtle. Tarnya McKew netting in the 1st half for Ipswich Wanderers. Flying up the table with 3 wins on the spin are Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies, Taylor Parrish scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win against West Billericay Ladies who are still looking for their 1st points of the season.

          Norfolk

Now the league action gets reduced as this season’s County Cup competition get under-way. There was just the one league match in Norfolk Division One with Wymondham Town Ladies travelling to Long Stratton Ladies. Continued their 100% league win rate at the start earning 3 points to climb into 2nd spot in the league scoring 7 goals, Kayleigh Holloway and Laura Hamilton-Rout both scoring 2 with the other 3 goals scored by Amber Cantwell, Emily Anderson and Gabriella Stone. Did however concede goals in the league for the 1st time with Long Stratton finding the back of the net twice through, Charlie Head and Summer Moore final score 7-2 to Wymondham.

One other league match in Division Two saw Bohemians Ladies travel to play Bungay Town Ladies Reserves won their 1st match of the season a convincing score line to hitting 7 goals without reply. Ellie Blaxell and Joanne Ogogo both hitting hat-tricks with Leanne Smith grabbing the other goal.

Another big score too for Lynn Ladies as they smashed 11 past another Division Three side Freethorpe Ladies, Shelley Woods scoring 6 times with Chloe Edwards grabbing a hat-trick Josie Turner and Louise Coggles getting the other goals.

Didn’t cover a match in the east this weekend with it being the final weekend in FAWSL 2 and if I had of done wouldn’t have had enough note paper to report on the final County Cup 1st Round tie as Division One leaders Aylsham FC Ladies hosted Division Two leaders North Walsham Angels Ladies. Aylsham went 2-0 before ending up 3-6 down came back to score 3 ties to level the scores at 6-6 after normal time to force extra-time going on to find the back of the net 3 more times to win the match 9-6. Aylsham’s goal scorers were Leanne Woodward with 3, Abbie Charlton ad Lisa Ferdani with 2 each with single goals for Sarah Thompson and Alicia Lacey.

Was the 2nd round of the County Cup in Suffolk this weekend and the draw had seen some of the big guns and favourites drawn against each other with an all FAWPL South East Division One clash between Ipswich Town Ladies and Lowestoft Town Ladies. Holders Ipswich Town Ladies won the match 4-2 thanks to goals from Amanda Crump, Mikaela Keleovoulou, Jade Henry and Holly Clement. Hannah Waters scored twice for Lowestoft as they exit the cup.  Just the one league match across the 3 divisions this Sunday. A big result though for Flitwick Ladies in Division One as they finally get their 1st win of the season after making a terrible start to the season winning 4-2 at home to Toddington Rovers Ladies who now prop up the table looking for their 1st points still themselves.

The Tuesday Round-Up

The Tuesday Round-Up – Edition Five

It’s Tuesday, time for another Round-Up of the weekends women’s football action across the East of England. Plenty to cover once again in the leagues and cup competitions. Drama and giant killings in the FA Women’s Cup 3rd Round Qualifying as the FAWPL Division One sides enter the competition. The 1st round of the Norfolk Women’s League Cup. Controversial late winning goals in the FAWPL Southern Division. Plus a new addition to the Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship South making their debut this weekend, but sadly too the loss of a side from the ERWFL Premier Division. Let’s get started.

FA Women’s Cup 3rd Round Qualifying

No better place to start than the FA Women’s Cup as the competition reaches 3rd Round Qualifying. 15 ties featuring 21 sides plying their trade in the East. The FAWPL South East Division One sides enter at this round all 12 sides up against lower league opposition. Wymondham Town Ladies whom I saw in the previous round were drawn at home to face FAWPL South East Division One, Cambridge United WFC. This match feature’s on the Supporting Women’s Football Blog.

The tie was a repeat of last years 3rd Round Qualifying tie back then Wymondham Town Ladies took Cambridge all the way before eventually going out in extra-time. This time around Wymondham were coming into the tie in great form, Cambridge had struggled at the start of the season. The higher league side started brightly and created numerous chances with Wymondham settling into a disciplined shape working hard to keep their goal intact. 0-0 at half time Wymondham grew in confidence the longer the match wore on an error at the back mid way through the 2nd half from Cambridge allowed Wymondham’s Sally Hammerton to steal in on the ball take it around Cambridge keeper Verity Crook and place the ball into the empty net beyond, a brilliant save from Wymondham goalkeeper Hamilton-Rout denied Cambridge a late equaliser to force extra-time again as they held on to claim a big scalp and reach the next round of the FA Women’s Cup going further than they ever have before. Click on the link below for all the match action.

Wymondham Town Ladies v Cambridge United WFC

Gt Shelford Ladies progressed to the next round of the FA Women’s Cup needed extra-time for last time out to reach this round this time away to Leyton Orient Ladies they progressed to 4th Round Qualifying via a penalty shoot out after Leyton Orient had had their goal under siege for large periods of the match couldn’t convert a chance however 0-0 after normal, then extra-time they won the shoot out 3-2 to progress. Milton Keynes Dons Ladies were on the road a long trip into Essex to play Eastern Region Premier Division side Gt Wakering Rovers Ladies. Goals from Leah Cudone, Lauren Goodier and Claire Hollingsworth saw them safely through to the next round final score 1-3.

Colchester Town Ladies were knocked out of the cup had a depleted squad to call upon the bare 11 on the day losing 1-2 at home to Hemel Hempstead Town Ladies. Denham United Ladies were on the road travelling to Riverside Rovers Ladies in Peterborough playing 2 leagues below them they ran out 0-4 winners Alissa Down netting 2 with Lauren Cox and Jeta Bytyqi also scoring. On the road too were Lowestoft Town Ladies who enjoyed a fantastic run in the FA Women’s Cup last season, now an FAWPL Division One side this was their 1st taste of cup action this time around and reached the next round with ease beating QPR Girls 1-5 the goalscorers Millie Davies, Amber Rowland, Hannah Waters with Zoe Cossey finding the back of the net twice.

Riding high at the top of FAWPL South East Division One, Crystal Palace Ladies were handed a home tie against Team Solent Ladies, Steph Mann gave them a 1-0 advantage at the break, 2nd half Crystal Palace went on to score 4 more Nicha Dyett and Rochelle Shakes with a brace each to win 5-0 reach the next round. Like wise Gillingham FC Ladies have momentum at the top of FAWPL South Division One hot on the heels of Crystal Palace Ladies were at home in the FA Women’s Cup to AFC Wimbledon Ladies. Kallie Balfour gave Gillingham an early lead, was 1-0 at half-time Gillingham doubled the lead Balfour netting again, Wimbledon were reduced to 10 soon after the referee brandishing a red card to Kirstie Bavington. Gillingham took advantage April Bowers netting the 3rd goal then Balfour completed her hat-trick to make it 4-0, Shannon Redhouse and Lauren Williams scored to make it 6, an own goal adding the 7th final core 7-0.

Bedford Ladies made it safely through the the next round of the FA Women’s Cup away to Wealdstone Ladies won the match 1-4 with Rebecca Vass scoring twice, Kaiya Gunn and Chelsea Hunter with the other goals. Ipswich Town Ladies netted 6 times as they travelled to ERWFL Division One West side Sawbridgeworth Town WFC, Hollie Clement getting 4 of the goals with Jasmine Cox and Jade Henry adding the other goals in a 0-6 win. Into injury time 94 minutes played Brighton are awarded a free kick outside the Coventry area the ball is flighted in towards goal the keeper is looking to take the ball is clattered into as Brighton’s forwards look to meet the ball it goes in the back of the net substitute Charlotte Young credited with the winner as the referee allows the goal. A clip of the goal was put on social media have had a chance to look at it and it’s split opinion even amongst my work colleagues one’s a former non league striker and he says, goal, the others a referee and he would’ve blown up for a foul on the keeper… both though like myself have watched it a dozen times one of those I think that could go either way, Coventry are one of Brighton’s main rivals to challenge for the title will this be a decisive result still early days and these thing’s have a habit of levelling themselves out over a season.

Cardiff City Ladies are still hot on Brighton’s heels in 2nd place a point behind as they won again at the weekend running out 4-0 victors at home to Tottenham Hotspur Ladies, Michelle Green, Hope Suominen, Laura Williams and Kelly Aldridge with the goals. Laura Wiseman added a 3rd goal early in the 2nd half which Wymondham Town dominated to go on to win 0-3 click on the link below to take you to the full match report
