The Tuesday Round-Up – Edition Thirty
Sunday 10th April
Have reached the 30th Edition of The Tuesday Round-Up of what has so far been an exciting women’s football season across the East of England. A packed Sunday with the weather playing virtually no havoc with the fixture lists. Into April the business end of the season, plenty of important games coming up for sides at the top and bottom of the league tables. League cup final places decided in Beds & Herts, Essex and Cambridgeshire at the weekend. A new County Cup Final line up in Essex too. League games are getting completed with sides no starting to play out their games looking to finish on a high. None more so than in the top division covered by Women’s Football East and that’s where we start so let’s go.
FAWPL Southern Division
Champions!
Brighton and Hove Albion WFC are the Champions of the FAWPL Southern Division. Went into their final league match of the season away to Tottenham Hotspur Ladies having led the FAWPL Southern Division for much of the 2015/16 season. Having played more games than their title chasing rivals had opened up an 8 point lead travelling up to Brimsdown Rovers FC this Sunday to play mid-table Tottenham, knew one final win would give them the title, couldn’t be caught by any side below.
It was to this match that the featured match report on the Supporting Women’s Football Blog came from, travelling down to Brimsdown Rovers FC, saw a tense 1st half, a scrappy contest with both sides working hard to disrupt the others flow in the middle of the park led to few chances being created. Brighton & Hove Albion WFC had edged those chances and on the stroke of half time got their noses in front, Sophie Perry a constant threat on the left flank for the visitors putting a great ball into the area, striker Amy Taylor getting her toe onto the end of it before the advancing Toni-Anne Wayne in the Tottenham goal to turn the ball home, the celebrations releasing a huge amount of tension.
The 2nd half began much the same as the 1st, Brighton defending well against Tottenham as they searched for an equalising goal. With 20 minutes to go Tottenham manager Karen Hills made a change bringing off Wendy Martin and sending on Bianca Baptiste, the powerful striker making an immediate impact hustling the Brighton back line, robbed them of the ball wide right and turned to attack, sending the ball in towards goal from the angle had the power and pace to fly over Brighton keeper, Faye Baker and nestle in the back of the net beyond to cue more excited celebrations, this time from the home side. The lead wasn’t to last for long, Brighton got themselves 2-1 up just 6 minutes later and it was from the boot of Taylor again, curling a shot around Wayne from the edge of the box. The final whistle saw everyone connected with the club rush into the centre circle to celebrate as saw Brighton & Hove Albion WFC win the league title and not only that book them their place in the FAWSL Play-off match at the end of May.
Women’s Football East sends it’s congratulations to all the players, staff and fans of Brighton & Hove Albion WFC. The whole match report from the Supporting Women’s Football Blog can be found on the website below.
That ended the title hopes of the only 2 sides left able to catch Brighton & Hove Albion WFC if they had of slipped up against Tottenham on Sunday, Charlton Athletic Women in 2nd and 3rd placed Cardiff City Ladies. Both weren’t in league action at the weekend. Cardiff City Ladies as a result slip down to 4th in the table as Coventry United Ladies move above them in the table after a 2-1 home win against C&K Basildon Ladies. Had to come back from behind to win the match going into the dressing room 1-0 down at half time, C&K Basildon Ladies, Zoe Rushen scoring from the penalty spot inside the opening 15 minutes. Coventry were pushing hard for a goal saw several efforts saved by Molly Pavey in the C&K Basildon goal before finding the back of the net 6 minutes into the 2nd half, Amber Hughes with the goal to her name. It was an own goal scored by Claire Lacey that saw the 3 points won 12 minutes later. Are now one of 3 sides battling for the runners-up spot in the division along with Cardiff and Charlton.
Portsmouth FC Ladies too still have a chance of clinching the runners-up spot in the FAWPL Southern Division although that was delivered a blow at the weekend as they lost their 2nd successive league match having lost away to Brighton & Hove Albion WFC away last time out were on home soil taking on Lewes Ladies. A single goal scored in the 1st hlf on 38 minutes by Natasha Wells for Lewes enough to see all 3 points go home with the away side in their penultimate league match of the season.
West Ham United Ladies were playing their final league match of the season at home against Queens Park Ladies a place above them in 9th in the FAWPL Southern Division title. A difficult season off the pitch for West Ham United Ladies a player dispute with the manager seeing several experienced 1st team regulars and favourites leave has seen the side blood a number of younger players. End the season with a goalless draw which see’s them finish 10th in the table, will be interesting to watch over the close season to see how the club builds up for the new campaign.
It’s a draw too between the bottom two sides, Plymouth Argyle Ladies and Forest Green Rovers Ladies, both relegated from the FAWPL Southern Division they finally earn another point each, in what has been a tough league season for both. Both goals coming in the 1st half, Summer Taylor put Plymouth Argyle Ladies ahead on the quarter hour mark. Forest Green Rovers Ladies levelled through Annie Martin 12 minutes later to see both sides take a point.
FAWPL South East Division One
Another good Sunday for FAWPL South East Division One leaders, Crystal Palace Ladies as they score 5 at home to maintain their 9 point lead at the top of the table and extend their unbeaten record. Had seen one of their title rivals Gillingham FC Ladies drop points in the chase as they were held to a 0-0 draw at Enfield Town Ladies in mid-week. Welcomed Norwich City Ladies to Bromley FC on Sunday. Went in 1 up at half-time, with Alma Donohoe firing home on 28 minutes. 2nd half Crystal Palace continued to apply pressure to the Norwich defence, Gemma Bryan scoring early in the half before Pamela McRoberts scored on 63 minutes, Francesca Ali put them 4-0 up with 20 minutes left. Bryan adding her 2nd and Crystal Palace’s 5th goal late on to see them reach 18 games unbeaten with 4 to play.
Gillingham FC Ladies having dropped points in mid-week saw their title hopes suffer another blow at home on Sunday in 3rd place they were taking on 2nd placed Milton Keynes Dons Ladies. Took an early lead Jade Keogh put through to score inside 3 minutes. Were pegged back by Milton Keynes Dons Ladies before half-time Charley Clarke levelling the scoreline. The visitors went on to win the game scoring midway through the 2nd half, Leah Cudone scoring what would prove to be the winning goal.
That defeat for Gillingham FC Ladies, coupled with a win for Luton Town Ladies away to Enfield Town Ladies see’s them switch places in the table. Building on last Sunday’s 2-1 home win against Cambridge United WFC. Travelling to the Queen Elizabeth II Stadium, Enfield Town Ladies once again proved they are a tough side to break down, Luton Town Ladies eventually did so on the stroke of half-time an own goal conceded as Natasha Fensome’s shot is deflected into the back of the net, the 3 points were held onto 2nd half as goalkeeper Hollie Staples saved a penalty kick. Up to 3rd with 2 matches left to play.
In 5th place Cambridge United WFC bounce back from last weeks defeat against Luton Town Ladies in style scoring double figures to relegate bottom side Bedford Ladies. Without a single league point since September 2015 it has been on the cards for Bedford for some time only Old Actonians Ladies failure to secure a league win in 2016 has delayed thing’s now they can no longer close the game. Hosted a Cambridge United WFC side that were in the mood for scoring goals. Paige Logie with a hat-trick with a brace each from wide players Becky Taylor and Laura Mills, Laura Bright, Laura Baker, Isabella Simmons, and Faith Hewitt all with a goal each, but the pick of the goals was from central defender Kayleigh-Anne Burt hitting a volley from outside the box into the back of the net as she scores her 1st goal for the club.
Ipswich Town Ladies return to the top half of the FAWPL South East Division One table with an away victory at Old Actonians Ladies on Sunday. Sharon Odofin scoring for Old Actonians from the penalty spot, but it wasn’t enough to secure any points at the 5th time of asking in 2016 as Ipswich Town Ladies won 2-1 goals coming from Aimee Harrison and Roxanne Small. Old Actonians ladies remain 3rd bottom 2 points of 2nd bottom Lowestoft Town Ladies but have plenty of games yet to play a single point would be enough to keep them safe if they could just find it, but won’t matter as their rivals at the bottom have just the one match left to play now. Lowestoft had a chance to move above Old Actonians on Sunday know their chances of avoiding relegation are nearly impossible but whilst their rivals can’t buy a point they have a chance. Were at home against Denham United Ladies on Sunday, Aimee Durrant put Lowestoft into the lead on 30 minutes saw them go into the dressing room with the lead. Denham United Ladies came back 2nd half an own goal putting them level before Lauren Cox and Helen Capewell scored to see them win 3-1 to take all 3 points.
Eastern Regional Leagues
Can never take nothing for granted in any league and it looked odds on that Stevenage Ladies with their games in hand would overhaul Billericay Town Ladies at the top of the ERWFL Premier Division to win promotion to the FAWPL. 3 games in hand 2 points behind they had the chance to take top spot on Sunday at home in a rearranged league fixture against AFC Dunstable Ladies, their local rivals however have if you’ve been following The Tuesday Round-Up have been in a rich vein of form as the season draws to a close 5 wins and a draw in 2016 to date. Were a goal down at the break Stevenage Ladies taking the lead before Dunstable came back 2nd half with 2 goals from Amber Pearson to win the game 2-1. Stevenage Ladies have 3 games left and need 2 wins from those to secure the title assuming Billericay Town Ladies win their final league game. AFC Dunstable Ladies have played out their fixtures securing a comfortable mid-table finish a strong end with 6 wins and a draw in 2016 sure they’d love the season to continue, but positive momentum to carry into the new season.
Despite their win against Stevenage Ladies, AFC Dunstable Ladies actually drop a place in the ERWFL Premier Division table, ties on the same number of points as Colchester Town Ladies with a close goal difference a large win sees Colchester Town up into 4th spot following a 4-1 away win at bottom side Great Wakering Rovers Ladies on Sunday. 2 goals scored by Paige Wakefield plus a goal a piece for Chelsea Forde and Kira Fitz-Patrick saw them win 4-1. Also level on points with Colchester Town Ladies and AFC Dunstable Ladies are Haringey Borough Women all on 26 points now in 6th playing their penultimate fixture of the season were at home against Great Shelford Ladies. A close match in the finish saw the home side edge it 3-2 with goals from Stephanie Cooper, Roisin Cormack and Morgan Lundberg. Great Shelford Ladies were disappointed not to take at least a point from the game their goals coming from Sophie Ugar and Alison Wright.
3rd placed AFC Sudbury Ladies were at home playing Norfolk side Acle United Ladies in the ERWFL Premier Division, have all but secured a 3rd place finish in their 1st season in the league following a 1-1 draw. Looked to be heading to all 3 points after Stacey Teager had given them the lead however they were pegged back deep into stoppage time by Acle United Ladies, Kate Pasque earning the away side a point.
In the ERWFL Division One West there are new leaders as Royston Town Ladies having been playing catch up with their fixtures all season leap above leaders Hutton Ladies and 2nd placed Offley & Stopsley Ladies who have both played out their fixtures, are now a point ahead with 2 left to play on 21. Away to Sawbridgeworth Town WFC, Royston Town Ladies, Samantha Tinsley scored twice with Hayley Graham also on target as they won 3-1 have 2 left to play and look odds on to win the league. Not quite their yet as Hoddesdon Owls Ladies back in 5th have 4 games left to play and with a possible 12 points to gain Royston Town Ladies need on more result to get over the line, the 2 are scheduled to face each other but it could be all over by then, Hoddesdon though are in a good streak of form and will be aiming for a strong end to the season.
Were in action in the quarter finals of the ERWFL Division One Cup at the weekend 3 games taking place with Writtle Ladies involved in the County Cup instead. Hoddesdon Owls Ladies were at home playing Stevenage Ladies Reserves for a place in the semi-finals. Becky Scola drove home a free kick on 25 to put Hoddesdon 1-0 up 7 minutes before half-time the lead was 2-0 Kristi Burling on target. Stevenage Ladies Reserves came back into the tie 2nd half pulled a goal back through jade Beckett with 12 minutes left before forcing the game into extra-time deep into injury time Leah Littlechild striking the ball home. Into extra-time Burling headed home from a corner to put Hoddesdon Owls Ladies back in front before Kristina O’Connell rounded the keeper late on to seal the victory and see Hoddesdon Owls into the semi-finals.
Joining them in the semi-finals are Colney Heath Ladies travelling to Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies. Molly Slade giving the visitors a 1-0 lead at half-time, Holly Sheridan doubled the advantage on 50 minutes. Brief hope of a come back for Little Thurrock Dynamos with 12 to go as Katy Judd pulled it back to 2-1, that was short lived as Colney Heath Ladies scored again 2 minutes later to go 3-1 up, Kirsty Feasey with the goal to see out the tie. Offley & Stopsley Ladies are the other side to book a place in the semi-finals of the ERWFL Division One Cup, at home to Hutton Ladies who scored twice through Hayley Critchell and Ebony Moore it wasn’t enough as Offley & Stopsley Ladies found the back of the net 3 times to progress. The semi-final line up will be completed by either Writtle Ladies or Silver End United Ladies who play next Sunday.
Norfolk
In Norfolk Women’s Division One, Wymondham Town Ladies had moved into top spot last weekend, on 32 points unbeaten with 12 matches played 2 points clear of 2nd placed Brandon Town Ladies. Wymondham town Ladies were away to 3rd placed Thorpe United Ladies who had 4 matches left to play, on 23 points could catch Wymondham Town Ladies still to win the title so a big game for both sides. Thorpe United Ladies brought Wymondham Town Ladies unbeaten league record to an end Charlotte Groves scoring 2 goals with captain Rebekah Lake adding a 3rd goal in a 3-0 victory to set up a potential grandstand finish. Wymondham Town Ladies are away to Fakenham Town Ladies next Sunday 3 points are a must, then it might all come down to goal difference and with a good advantage in that department will be watching Thorpe United’s last 3 fixtures nervously, always going to be a competitive title race at the top in Norfolk and has proved to be the case.

Jessica Oxlade scoring the goal for East Bergholt United both still have 2 matches left to play but it’s the side moving up into 3rd place in the table they will be watching.
Far from being the only side out there, Copleston Ladies just haven’t been able to get the league games played during the winter and have been playing catch up all season. Whilst Brantham Athletic Ladies were winning the Suffolk Women’s League Cup last Weds, Copleston Ladies were beating Leiston St Margarets Ladies 8-0 to move themselves up from 5th, now they are up to 3rd spot after another 3 point haul away to bottom side Ipswich Phoenix Ladies, now such an easy task this time around still won the game 3-0 thanks to a Jade Horne hat-trick. Move onto 29 points 4 off top spot with 4 left to play. Despite their being just the 7 sides contesting the league Suffolk is proving to be an exciting league, going to the wire.
Cambridgeshire
The loss of Premiership side Huntingdon Town Ladies so late on in the season was a blow to Cambridgeshire Women’s football, but wasn’t an easy decision for the club to make. Were the holders of the League Cup and had reached the semi-finals of this years competition, drawn at home against the young guns of Cambridge City Ladies they were awarded the away win to progress to the final itself took on another side feeling the fixture frustration, Brandon Town Ladies in if it was ever a competitive fixture would be a tasty encounter.
The other semi-final in the Cambridgeshire Women’s League Cup did take place however this weekend with last season’s beaten finalists Cambridge United WFC Reserves at home to fellow Premiership side Fulbourn Bluebirds. Top of the league versus bottom of the league it was Cambridge United WFC Reserves who won comfortably to book their place in a 2nd cup final of the season Emily Ingle with a hat-trick with Monique Christian, Hayley Turner and Gemma Clark also on target in a 6-1 win. Michaela Garner with the goal for Fulbourn Bluebirds.

Emma Searle scoring a hat-trick with, Kayleigh Churchyard, Emma Frost, Jessica Harvey, Charley Miller and Shannon Kelly all getting on the scoresheet in an 8-0 win and while others in the table still remain in contention with the games running out it looks to be between March and Bourne for the Championship North title.
Stamford Ladies in having climbed up to 3rd in the Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship North table last weekend were beaten this Sunday at home playing Wisbech St Marys Ladies who took the 3 points in a 2-1 win to lift themselves up from 6th into 4th in the table.
In the Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship South 2nd and 3rd placed St Ives Town Ladies and Milton Ladies were both awarded H-W and 3 points without kicking a ball as frustrated as they would have been not to do so. That meant just the one game taking place a different kind of pressure for Park Ladies to deal with as they were the side on top spot now having been chasing for a good part of the season an away trip to Isleham United Ladies a tight game Shona Kelly and Rachel Turner both scored for Isleham United. Park Ladies won the game and took the 3 points home edging it 3-2, Kirstie Smith with 2 goals, Amy Newell scoring too. Another league that could well go down to the wire.
Essex
Will start in Essex with the Women’s County Cup. The finalists were all sorted weren’t they? Sadly not the case as Billericay Town Ladies found themselves disqualified from the competition and Writtle Ladies knocked out by them at the quarter final stage reinstated to play Brentwood Town Ladies in a retaken semi-final this Sunday. In the Essex Women’s league itself it was the semi-finals of the League Cup this Sunday. Harlow Ladies leading Division One, made it into their 3rd Cup Final of the season, beating Premier Division side Eastern Avenue 2-1 away from home a goal in either half from Phillipa Stephens and Catherine Kelly enough to see them reach the final, where they will play another Premier Division side as Runwell Hospital Ladies beat Collier Row Tigers 2-1 to progress at home.

At the 14th time of asking it was finally a 1st win in the league for Sandy Ladies, 2nd bottom in the division hosting bottom side Flitwick Ladies. A convincing win too which saw Kayleigh Bennett score a hat-trick with a goal a piece for Pearl Houghton, Katie Seldon and Amber Williams as they won 6-0.
In Beds & Herts Women’s Division Two, Garston Ladies FC 96 climb above Houghton Athletic Ladies into 3rd place in the table with a thumping 8-2 home win against AFC Kempston Rovers Ladies. Panshanger Ladies aren’t usually involved in too many low scoring games and this weekends Division Three encounter was no different as they hosted Crawley Green Ladies at the Moneyhole Playing Fields. Senel Chapman put the visitors ahead 20 minutes into the match, Ellie Burke on target to get Panshanger back on level terms in the half hour mark they were behind 4 minutes later as Jessica McNamara scored for Crawley Green to see them lead at half-time. Leanne Stevens pulled it back to 3-3 for Crawley Green with 10 minutes left on the clock, the game saw a winning goal however 4 minutes from time with Harvey popping up with her 2nd goal of the game to see Panshanger win 4-3.
That concludes Edition Thirty of The Tuesday Round-Up saw a few thing’s decided or more certainly set up a few more scenario’s top and bottom of the leagues 2 more unbeaten records ended too. Teams are playing out games as we reach the mid point in April not many games to go in the quest for silverware an promotion. No doubt there will be more thing’s settled next time in The Tuesday Round-Up until then thanks for reading.
