The Round-Up

Sunday 20th August

On to the ERWFL opening weekend The Round-Up continues with the Eastern Regional Leagues. Three leagues this season with an influx of 5 new sides. The Premier Division contested by 12 sides with Cambridge City Ladies and Colney Heath Ladies promoted from Division One last season. This season Division One is once again split into 2 leagues a North and a South with 7 sides in each playing each other 3 times. The South Division One was supposed to contain 8 sides but very sadly on the eve of the season Offley & Stopsley WFC a long established side in the ERWFL took the hard decision to fold due to lack of players a real shame but wishing all the players and coaching staff all the best. Five new names in the league, Harlow Ladies and Bishops Stortford Ladies joining Division One South. King’s Lynn Town Ladies, Cambridge United WFC Reserves and Ipswich Town Ladies Development joining Division One North. With Offley & Stopsley WFC  folding there were no games in Division One South on the opening weekend but a still plenty of action to bring you from the Premier Division and Division One North although some results hurt on the opening day.

ERWFL Premier Division

Acle United Ladies were one win away from sealing the ERWFL Premier Division title last season and promotion to the FAWPL they were playing Haringey Borough Women the winner taking the title, Acle lost Haringey celebrated winning the title. Nevertheless a fantastic season by the Norfolk side and they have a determination to go one better this time around on the whole have retained most of their squad have brought in goalkeeper Cyan Fullbrook from North Walsham Angels Ladies. Kirstie Kindred and Olivia Mungham-Grey join from Thorpe United Ladies along with Ceira Flatt from Lowestoft Town Ladies. Started their season on the road in Bedfordshire away to AFC Dunstable Ladies who themselves enjoyed a fantastic season last tie around for the most part in 3rd position ultimately ending 4th. Have recruited a few Offley & Stopsley players including Charlene Moreton, Nicolle Robinson and Riane Townsend-Brown.

Acle took the lead at Creasey Park, captain Rebecca Burton putting them 1-0 up in the 1st half scored her 2nd from the penalty spot after midfielder Amber Rowland was brought down in the area. Dunstable got it back to 2-1 before the break. 2nd half Acle went on to extend their lead Megan Todd grabbing herself and opening day brace before Burton went on to score her hat-trick tapping home at the far post to seal a 5-1 win.

A 5-1 win wasn’t enough to put Acle top of the Premier Division however are actually 4th! The spot is Billericay Town Ladies after they had an emphatic win at home in their opening league fixture against league new comers Colney Heath Ladies. The visitors squad was a bit thread bare with a number of their squad unavailable were put to the sword by a Billericay side that has in recent season been challenging at the top of the ERWFL no so much last season finishing mid-table. Paris Smith bagged herself 5 goals on the opening weekend with her captain Lindsey Morgan not far behind with 4 there were goals to for Hayley Piggott, Lauren Knight and Nicole Farmer in a 12-1 win. Samantha May with the consolation goal for Colney Heath who will come back stronger.

Ending the opening weekend in 2nd spot in the table are Bedford Ladies, title challenges for most of the campaign last season only out of the running in the final month finishing 3rd 3 points off top spot. Have a young squad this time around but still expect them to be sniffing around the top of the Premier Division table. Were at home hosting Lowestoft Town Ladies relegated from the FAWPL last season. Were very close to folding just a month ago due to lack of players but an SOS call put out on social media was answered with a good response their new management team having a determination to get the club back on the right footing. New faces to bed in however it was Bedford’s more settled squad who came out on top a hat-trick for Eden Kibron along with goals for captain Michelle Byrne, Priya Bhatti and Natasha Fensome in a 7-0 win.

Into 3rd are AFC Sudbury Ladies performed well last season eventually ending up in 5th spot looked at times as if they could challenge the sides above them. Started the season at home to Royston Town Ladies. The goals were shared out amongst the team as Sudbury ran out 5-0 winners with Mia Etheridge, Phoebe Guiver, Sophie Jeffery, Megan Partridge and Stacey Teager all opening their scoring accounts.

4 sides weren’t in action will get their season started next weekend, Brentwood Town Ladies, Colchester Town Ladies, Writtle Ladies and newly promoted Cambridge City Ladies.

ERWFL Division One North

In ERWFL Division One North their were 3 games played on the opening weekend with 7 sides in the league it was King’s Lynn Town Ladies having to sit thing’s out get started this Sunday the 27th at home to Essex side Silver End United Ladies. Histon Ladies were relegated from the Premier Division after finishing bottom this season. Over the close season however the club has gotten stronger already linked with Histon FC and playing their home games at the Glassworld Stadium now have a new Reserves side to bolster the 1st team. Began the season with a tasty encounter a local derby with Cambridge United WFC Reserves, Histon formerly Great Shelford Ladies regularly playing Cambridge’s 1st team in the Invitation Cup Final. A different story today Cambridge United’s Reserve side having a few new faces and a squad stretched across both theirs and the 1st team squad players out through injury and unavailability it was Histon who took full advantage Sophie Lanham scoring to give Histon the lead in the 1st 5 minutes.

Abi Davies doubled the advantage to Histon midway through the 1st half with Katie Webb making it 3-0 on the half hour mark. Charlotte Westrope extended the lead further 20 minutes into the 2nd half, Cambridge had chances to pull a goal back nut Histon held onto the clean sheet to win 4-0 and get their season off to a winning start.

Histon are 2nd however as Norfolk side Wymondham Town Ladies who will be aiming for the title after clinching a 3rd place finish in their debut season in the ERWFL last season began with a strong home performance at home against new side Ipswich Town Ladies Development at King’s Meadow. Wymondham have recruited in the summer bringing in Luke Worley formerly Newmarket Town Ladies 1st team coach to assist manager Alex Guy, following Luke from Newmarket are striker Nadine Basson and midfielder Kirsten Hummel. Defender Lauren Kett has joined from Thorpe United Ladies, Mollie O’Callaghan and Brooke Moreno are also new addition to an ambitious club.

It was O’Callaghan on her debut who got Wymondham into the lead scoring on her debut in the 11th minute went on to score her 2nd on the half hour mark. Laura Wiseman was Wymondham’s top scorer last season and got off the mark in the 34th minute to put the home side 3-0 up scoring her 2nd 4 minutes later to see Wymondham in control of the game with a 4-0 lead at the break. The goals continued 2nd half Kayleigh Holloway made it 5-0 5 minutes after the restart. Leah Newcombe wearing the captains armband today made it 6-0 scoring (and I’m quoting twitter here) a WORLDIE from 35 yards. New signings Basson and Moreno were both introduced from the bench  and went on to score on their debuts Basson on 66 minutes and Moreno 3 minutes later. Wiseman completing her hat-trick in the last 10 minutes to wrap up a 9-0 win. Ipswich Town Ladies Development side unbeaten last season tasting defeat for the first time.

The last match from ERWFL Division One North featured Silver End United Ladies at home to Ipswich Wanderers Ladies. Silver End United Ladies have players back in their squad after suffering from departures last season that threatened the clubs survival have recovered and have confidence going into the new season. Ipswich Wanderers too have struggled for numbers in the past but are an established member of the ERWFL both are capable of pushing for the top of the table. It was Ipswich Wanderers who held the advantage at half-time leading 1-0, going onto claim all 3 points with a 3-1 win in the 2nd half captain Tanya McKew netting a brace along with a goal for Laura Tuley. Stephanie A’Len scoring for Silver End United Ladies.

Promises to be an interesting league, not seen the best of the new comers yet and both will be smarting after the opening weekend.

The Round-Up – ERWFL 23/04/17

The Round-Up

ERWFL – Sunday 23rd April

ERWFL Premier Division

The ERWFL season is very nearly at an end just a handful of league fixtures to be played before the League Plate and Cup finals on the 14th May. A huge game in the ERWFL Premier Division however a final game title deciding showdown between the top 2, Acle United Ladies and Haringey Borough Women. Just a point between the sides a winner takes all match.

Haringey have reached the league Cup final where they will play Division One Champions, Cambridge City Ladies. Have had an excellent season in the top 2 the whole campaign. Acle United Ladies having gotten behind on their league fixtures were way back in 8th spot just 6 weeks ago but a remarkable run of 8 straight wins took them to the top of the table for the 1st time in midweek one more and the title was theirs.

Got off to a great start, Broghan Scully playing Megan Todd through on goal to score after a strong start. Haringey got back on level terms straight away, Brooke Hills netting from a free-kick. Haringey went on to take the lead late in the 1st half Klesha Darroux putting the ball home from the top of the area.

Acle pushed for an equalising goal enough to see them finish top couldn’t find it however as Anele Komani full of pace and trickery up the other end was brought down in the box awarded the penalty she stepped up to score putting the ball in from the rebound after goalkeeper Jody Wells had saved. A late late goal from Roxanne Eshun sealing the result, Haringey Borough Women winning the ERWFL Premier Division title and promotion to the FAWPL.

Another for Sheridan saw her take her goals tally to 25 before Stevenage found the back of the net for another 3 goals to win 7-2. Rebecca Day and Leah Littlechild both hitting a hat-trick along with a goal for Emily Scofield. The final day win seeing Stevenage secure a 4th place finish.

Leaders Cambridge City were awarded the home win against Offley & Stopsley Women have 2 left both against Hutton Ladies useful for both as they prepare for the League Cup and Plate finals respectfully.

Match Report – Haringey Borough Women v Acle United Ladies

A dramatic final day to the league season in the ERWFL Premier Division with the top two going head to head in a title showdown. Haringey Borough Women have been in the top two all season, starting the season strongly tussling the top position between themselves and Bedford Ladies. Bedford played out their fixtures on 40 points Haringey with games in hand could catch them. So to could Acle United Ladies who with games in hand on everyone were as far down the table as 8th just 6 weeks ago a remarkable run of 8 straight wins seeing them go a point clear of Haringey going into this weekends fixture the final league match for both as Acle travelled down to play Haringey at Coles Park… winner takes all.

Match Report – Haringey Borough Women v Acle United Ladies

A huge game this Sunday in the ERWFL Premier Division a final day title showdown with the top 2 meeting in their last fixture a point between them as 2nd placed Haringey Borough Women host Acle United Ladies.

For both the ERWFL (Eastern Region Women’s Football League) Premier Division title would see them promoted to the FAWPL for the 1st time. The scenario for a final day title decider has been on the cards for a few weeks and followers of my other women’s football venture Women’s Football East will have read the possibilities on the weekly Round-Up’s. As it took shape the scenario said if either side were to win all of their remaining matches then they would be crowned champions.

Haringey Borough Women have been in the top two in the Premier Division, along side Bedford Ladies the two sides got off to a flyer, Haringey winning their 1st 4 opening league games, Bedford went 8 unbeaten winning 7 before Haringey ended that run. Since then the pair have shared the lead at the top of the table. When Bedford played out their fixtures ending top on 40 points, Haringey knew they could catch them with 2 games left back on 37 points winning against Histon Ladies last weekend took them top on goal difference.

An established side in the ERWFL, Steve Browne took on the ladies side bringing in several new faces to rejuvenate the side, very sadly he passed away over the New Year losing his battle with cancer. The team he had left behind in very good shape vowing to go and win the league for their former manager. Only met Steve Brown once back in 2015 when I saw Haringey play for the 1st time away to Brentwood Town Ladies. Was only too happy to help me out asking about his side, he told me they were young but full of talent once they settled as a team would do well in the league. As well as a potential league title it may yet be a double having also reached the final of the League Cup where they will face Division One Champions, Cambridge City Ladies.

A remarkable run from Norfolk side, Acle United Ladies at the end of the season as low as 8th place just 6 weeks ago! A good start to the season were right behind the leading pair of Bedford and Haringey, falling victim to a few postponements along with cup matches were getting behind in their league games falling down the Premier Division table as a result, in 8th place that was when as other games were played the potential title decider was on the cards.

A big day for both sides. No doubt alot of excitement mixed up with alot of nerves… and that’s just me!

Easy on paper have to deliver on the pitch more often than not the side with games in hand on the leaders slips up, easy to have your eyes on the game at the end of the road drop points as a result before hand. Acle United didn’t however each game won seeing them climb up the table moving into 2nd at the weekend 2 points behind Haringey, a midweek 3-1 away to Histon Ladies saw them lead the Premier Division table for the 1st time this season and Acle wanted to stay there.

The venue for today’s game Coles Park home to both Haringey Borough FC aswell as the women’s side. North London parking was at a premium outside the ground the carpark inside home to a bustling market. Doesn’t clear until 2pm. Risked parking in a permit holders area but told wardens were on patrol I returned to retrieve the car quicker than the traffic warden I spotted about to cross the road. Was allowed into the ground, the market traders only to helpful to assist me find a space. Their is a clubhouse with bar and refreshment booth situated beside the stadium itself. The changing rooms under the large mainstand offered covered seating with a good view over the pitch a good sized artificial surface recently put in. A nice sunny day a few clouds but the suncream was applied with the coat left in the boot of the car.

Haringey Borough Women starting XI – Cherkish Young, Brooke Hills, Shaydean Gorman, Roisin Cormack (C), Robyn Reardon, Shernelle Francois, Morgan Lundberg, Anele Komani, Shanice Nourrice, Klesha Darroux & Julia Carruthers
subs – Roxanne Eshun, Stephanie Cooper, Karen Nicholls & Karla Parker

Acle United Ladies starting XI – Jody Wells, Anna Larkins, Luka Goodfield, Leah McGuire, Chloe Shields, Kate Pasque, Amber Rowland, Broghan Scully, Alice Ladbrooke, Meagan Todd & Rebecca Burton (C).

subs – Jade Copeman, Bryony Knights & Lauren Bullard.

(roll on roll off substitutes)

A blow for Acle on the eve of the biggest game in the clubs history with Joanne Hooper, player coach, playing anywhere she’s needed most recently in goal damaging her MCL on crutches. Jody Wells normally a striker donning the gloves to today’s match. It’s the home side Haringey to kick-off the 1st half wearing yellow shirts and socks with blue trim and blue shorts. Acle lined up opposite wearing black and white vertical striped shirts, black shorts with black and white hooped socks.

Acle press Haringey on the ball right from kick-off the ball closed down and won by Broghan Scully on the right side pushes on with it before playing a diagonal ball up towards the top of the area with Megan Todd making the forward run, Haringey captain, Roisin Cormack gets across the attacker puts the ball out for a throw-in on the right. From the throw level with the top of the area Scully brings the ball inside again her target is Todd inside the box rolls the ball into her striking it first time sends the ball up over the crossbar.

A strong start from the visitors win a free-kick in the Haringey half as Kate Pasque is brought down as she makes a powerful run through the middle of the park. Right back Anna Larkins over the ball a couple of yards in front of the centre circle looks to send a shot in towards goal her flighted ball dipping late but doesn’t trouble Haringey goalkeeper, Cherkish Young as it flies over her crossbar.

Kate Pasque takes the ball forwards for Acle United Ladies

Haringey have a potent attack with strikers, Klesha Darroux and Julia Carruthers scoring 19 goals each so far this season. Darroux moves out into the left channel to receive the ball bursting forwards, Larkins gets back on her sliding in to put the ball out for a throw. Taken quickly played into Carruthers she looks to get into the box knocking the ball past Leah McGuire as she goes into challenge can’t catch up with the ball before it runs out of play.

Bringing the ball forwards Acle have captain Rebecca Burton available on the left side in space 25 yards out receiving the ball she is caught with a late challenge as she releases the ball, the referee plays the advantage as Todd latches onto the ball drives into the box, cuts it back towards the top of the area, doesn’t quite reach Alice Ladbrooke having made a good run as Haringey’s Robyn Reardon throws out a leg to intercept the ball and knock it out of her path. Burton feeling the challenge is up back on her feet after treatment.

Returns to the field left side just a Scully picks up the ball on halfway pushing infield passes the ball into Burton who lays it into the box for Todd making a central to left run, Young reacts smartly getting forwards to claim the ball before it can be knocked past her. Is a physical battle Haringey committing a few fouls early on giving away free-kicks. A frustrating start for the home side passes not finding their targets Acle benefiting.

GOAL! Acle capitalise upon their good start to the game scoring the opening goal in the 15th minute. The build up on the right side pressuring the ball winning it back played on by Scully, Todd moving into the box that side gets to the ball first sending it across the advancing Young into the back of the net 0-1.

Megan Todd opens the scoring for Acle United Ladies

GOAL! The lead is short-lived however as Haringey find an immediate response looking to get the ball forwards from the restart Shanice Nourrice played in on the right is fouled 30 yards out by Pasque. Brooke Hills comes forwards from the back to take the free-kick sends a high ball in towards goal, coming in near post on target a difficult on for Wells goes to palm it over, slips through her gloves and despite a desperate lunge can’t keep it out 1-1.

Defender Brooke Hills scores from a free-kick to make it
1-1 an immediate response for Haringey

The physical contest continues strong challenges coming in keeping the referee busy, so far letting things go. Acle press Ladbrooke 30 yards out latches onto a defensive clearance hits the ball on the half volley, Young quickly across to her left post can see the shot bounce wide. Nourrice on the attack with the ball on the right for Haringey, plays the diagonal pass forwards into Komani, collides with the onrushing Wells at the top of the box, the ball rolling into the net beyond, doesn’t stand however as the striker had moved too soon flagged offside a blow to the back for Wells needs treatment before she can continue.

Ready to take the resulting free-kick for the offside Wells’ ball find Burton on the move up top 25 yards out looks to drive forwards, Hills gets back on her just as she is about to pull the trigger the ball out for a throw deep on the left. Luka Goodfield comes forwards to take gets the ball given back to her going to the byline whips a high cross into the six yard box the ball is plucked down safely by Young.

Hills sends the ball into the path of Nourrice breaking down the right wing turning inside moving into the fires looks to fire the ball across the face of goal, McGuire cuts the cross out conceding the corner right side. A good delivery from the set-piece Wells does well in the middle of her six yard box gloving the ball away from a throw on the opposite side. Haringey make a change Shernelle Francois giving way for Roxanne Eshun.

Cormack is late with the challenge again bringing down Todd on the left as she is put in down the line by Burton giving away the free-kick outside the corner of the box it’s Burton to take sends it long towards the far post Todd is under the ball as she goes to jump, knocked back in by the defender beyond her however Pasque inside six yards out before the post gets her head on the ball nodding it down puts it straight into the goalkeepers gloves. Acle have a player down on the far side, it’s Scully looks in a lot of pain after a challenge can’t continue is replaced by Bryony Knights who joins Todd in attack up front.

Darroux seeing the ball across her body 25 yard out skips in behind evading Shields tackle as she enters the box left of goal gets a shot away as the angle closes against her a good glove on the ball from Wells diving to her right to save the ball behind for the corner kick. Haringey finish the 1st half strongly, Anele Komani getting the ball out to Gorman on the right a handball spotted by the referee gives the home side a free-kick as the winger looks to play the ball inside. Hills to put the ball into the area Pasque heads clear for Acle. Keeping the ball in the final 3rd moving it right a deflection sees Carruthers in behind into the area on the right Wells comes rushing towards her blocks the strikers shot.

GOAL! Haringey push players forwards Carruthers on the ball right side is fouled by McGuire, the referee plays the advantage as Gorman has the ball goes on into the area the shot fired across goal goes long retrieved by Darroux on the opposite side she carries it towards the top of the area before turning back around and firing the ball back across goal into the bottom corner 2-1 to give Haringey the lead inside the final 5 minute of the 1st half.

Haringey end the 1st half with a free-kick just outside the box on the right, Darroux to play the ball into the six yard box Wells makes the save getting her gloves on the ball palming it down then claims it as it is headed back towards her.

Half-time Haringey Borough Women 2-1 Acle United Ladies

A strong start from Acle saw them take the lead, Haringey finding an immediate response to level. Has been an open game a physical contest, and although both sides have tried using the width there’s been so much energy put into closing players down it has looked small at times. A narrow advantage to Haringey scoring late in the 1st half the game remains delicately balanced.
Acle to get the 2nd half started. Haringey have Francois back on in place of Lundberg. Burton plays the ball on for Todd drifting over to the right is fouled trying to knock the ball in behind. From the wide position Burton puts the ball long towards the far post area, it’s Reardon who gets her head on the ball to clear for Haringey.
Francois brings the ball forwards for Haringey through the middle before playing it up towards Darroux inside the box left of goal controls the ball well turning in behind with the keeper coming to meet her tries to lob her gets the ball over her, her effort dropping wide into the side netting. Larkins winning the ball inside the Haringey half on the right drives forwards squared the ball into the box Todd central, Cormack gets across her to win the ball.
Haringey Borough Women’s captain, Roisin Cormack
Another opportunity for Larkins to skip in behind from a throw in on the right, puts a high ball into the box this time, Cormack is there once more to head the ball away, Haringey look to counter, Pasque breaks the attack up. A high temp start to the 2nd half both sides wanting the next goal. Haringey break forwards, Komani into Carruthers goes on through the middle, Darroux moving right into the box, Carruthers picks her out taking on the shot, Darroux’s strike whistles over the crossbar.
Anele Komani on the ball for Haringey Borough
Komani is making so good runs with the ball in the 2nd half bringing the ball on committing players. Driving on looks to power her way into the area is brought down just outside left of the D. Steps up to take the resulting free-kick, gets her strike past the wall isn’t too far away as it flashes wide of the near post. Acle make a change Knights coming off for Lauren Bullard. Komani breaking forwards with the ball makes a run across the top of the Acle area looking for room to turn inside and take a shot, Pasque gets back on her to win the ball knocking it towards Larkins who sends it clear.
Burton holds the ball up well shielding it 20 yards from goal turns inside finding a yard of room to strike the ball her low drive skipping off the surface is gathered cleanly by Young. Both sides are putting alot of energy into the game. Good defending from McGuire inside the box as Carruthers gets hold of the ball on the left fires her cross into the middle looking to pick out Darroux, the Acle defending getting in front of her to win the ball. Carruthers attacking with the ball right side lets fly from outside the box puts her effort into the side netting.
Haringey’s Klesha Darroux with Acle’s Anna Larkins
Pasque wins the ball for Acle rolls it on for Rowland ahead of her tries to lift it over the top of the Haringey defence with Burton getting in behind, Young coming towards the ball can claim it first. Larkins pushing on more 2nd half as Acle look to equalise sends a ball into the area, Todd goes up for it with Cormack the defender putting the ball out for a corner on the left.
The game moves into the least 20 minutes Haringey still with the narrow 2-1 advantage. Coming forwards for Haringey Hills wins her side a corner kick. The inswinging ball drops over Wells falling into the six yard box beyond is cleared by the Acle defence, Carruthers latches onto it 20 yards out blasts the ball back in is blocked runs back to Francois, she shoots the ball through everyone on target, Wells has started to go to her right adjusts fantastically to get her foot on the ball to save, knocking the ball wide Larkins sends it up field.
GOAL! Penalty! Komani with a strong run on the ball going down the left turns inside to get into the area is fouled by McGuire, brought down the referee pointing to the spot. Down after the challenge with a little cramp, it’s Komani herself who is to take the spot kick. Runs up strikes the ball straight down the middle, Wells gets everything behind the ball makes the save pushing the ball back out Komani is quickest to react hitting the ball hard past the grounded Wells to make it 3-1

Wells saves Anele Komani’s initial strike but is unable to stop the followup going in

A hammer blow for Acle as the game moves into the last 10 minutes, make a change Scully back on replacing Burton. Todd is clattered on the right, Larkins over the free-kick from a wide position looks to float it into the box near post for runners to attack, too close to Young the goalkeeper claims without challenge. Larkins finds herself the furthest forwards as Ladbrooke gets the ball up into the box the Acle full back getting in between Reardon and the advancing Young as they look to deal with the ball, gets a touch deflecting the ball wide, Bullard is their the ball just won’t fall for her to get a shot away before being closed down by Hills.
From a throw in from a deep position on the right, Larkins works the ball inside lifts a cross in towards the near post Todd gets up for the header places the ball wide of target. Eshun comes of for Lundberg late on for Haringey. Acle needing 2 goals in the last 8 minutes push forwards risk leaving space in behind. Todd fires a low cross in along the top of the area, Ladbrooke meets it first time her strike taking a deflection on it’s way through to the goalkeeper. Pasque has a go from 25 yards out drives her shot wide across the goal.
Bullard gets possession plays the ball out to Larkins on the move down the right cuts the ball back along the six yard box, Todd rushing in far post throws herself at the ball can’t connect. Komani on for Francois on the left going forwards plays the ball on for Carruthers, heading for the box, Wells comes sliding out to meet her, the striker getting the ball beyond the goalkeeper cuts it back towards the top of the box trying to pick out Darroux, Goodfield closes her down wins the tackle.
Acle get the ball up into Todd, driving on through the middle, Gorman gets across to challenge her as she enters the box. Eshun returns to the action in the closing stages for Francois. Komani still has pace to burn as the game moves into the final minute getting down the left plays it on for Darroux inside the box, Wells comes sliding in does enough to put the striker off as she knocks the ball forwards but can’t catch it before it runs out of play.

GOAL!
The game is sealed in injury time, Wells’ goal kick falling sort goes straight to Eshun 25 yards out in a central area moves the ball to her right and with the keeper out of position places it into the back of the empty net. 4-1.

A hammer blow for Acle they send everyone forwards nevertheless, Haringey defend, Cormack bringing the ball out plays it long for Carruthers arriving at the top of the box strikes the ball her powerful shot smashing against the crossbar, the last action of the match as Haringey celebrate at the final whistle. League Champions.

The Round-Up – ERWFL 16/04/17

The Round-Up

ERWFL – Sunday 16th April

ERWFL Premier Division

Team’s are playing out their fixtures across the ERWFL and the finish to the Premier Division title race could well be going right to the wire. Have been talking it up on The Round-Up for a few editions now and the scenario for a final day show down between Haringey Borough Women and Acle United Ladies is a reality. It was a simple scenario for both as thing’s started to evolve win all your remaining games and you win the title.

Haringey Borough Women were at home on Sunday taking on bottom side in the ERWFL Premier Division, Histon Ladies needing the points themselves if they want to overhaul Colchester Town Ladies 4 points above them having played all their fixtures. In 2nd Haringey Borough had the opportunity to move above Bedford Ladies kill off their faint hopes of the title after they ended the campaign on 40 points. A hat-trick from Julia Carruthers plus a brace for Klesha Darroux takes both onto 19 goals for the season. Anele Komani also netting a brace in the game with Karesha Iton also scoring her 1st goal of the season in an 8-0 victory taking Haringey top on goal difference with one more home game to come.

Acle United Ladies were as low as 8th in the table with games in hand when the scenario that if they were to win all those matches they would win the title themselves. Have done so each win taking them a little closer to the dream, in 4th place were playing Royston Town Ladies for the 2nd successive Sunday winning the home fixture 3-1 were away this time around. Despite a few early chances for Acle United it was Royston Town who opened the scoring on 20 minutes with Stephanie Hicks putting the ball home. The lead lasted just 6 minutes as Broghan Scully recently returning to Acle United after a spell with Lowestoft Town Ladies turned a Megan Todd ball back across goal into the back of the net. Todd herself scoring 6 minutes later to give Acle United the lead. 2-1 the advantage at half-time, Acle United couldn’t find another goal to kill off the game until the 3rd minute of added time, Jade Copeman introduced in the 85th minute scoring to see Acle United seal a 3-1. The Round-Up – ERWFL 02/04/17

The Round-Up

ERWFL – Sunday 2nd April

ERWFL Cup

It was semi-finals day in both the ERWFL’s Cup and Plate competitions this Sunday. In the ERWFL Cup the 2 semi-finals featured 4 sides having fantastic season’s at the top of both Division’s with both games featuring a Premier Division side against Division One opposition. AFC Dunstable Ladies 3rd in the Premier Division were hosting Division One leaders, Cambridge City Ladies at Creasey Park. Looking good to secure the Division One title at the 1st time of asking following promotion last season Cambridge City came through a tough contest to win the game 2-0 to set up a potential league and cup double the goals from Bella Simmons her 21st of a prolific season and a 25 yard free kick from Bronte Rapley.

Cambridge City however aren’t the only side looking to make it a league and cup double in the ERWFL as Haringey Borough Women currently 2nd in the Premier Division table reached the final of the League Cup knocking out a spirited Wymondham Town Ladies side. 3rd in ERWFL Division One it was home side Wymondham Town who took the lead in the semi-final Laura Wiseman with the goal. Haringey Borough levelled the scores before the break going on to find 3 more goals in the 2nd half to win the game 4-1, Wymondham striking the crossbar twice. A brace for both Anele Komani and Julia Carruthers. The date for the final Sunday 14th May, venue to be confirmed will update via twitter once all the details are confirmed promises to be a cracker.

ERWFL Premier Division

With ERWFL Premier Division leaders Bedford Ladies having played out their fixtures and both 2nd and 3rd placed Haringey Borough and AFC Dunstable involved in the League Cup, Acle United Ladies took another step closer to catching up with the leading trio taking on bottom side Histon Ladies at home this Sunday. Goals from Kate Pasque and Bryony Knights seeing the hosts to a 2-1 victory that moves them up into 4th position in the table. Have 4 games left know if they win them all they will finish top of the table, you know the scenario so I won’t explain it again, an exciting if nail-biting end to the season beckons.

AFC Sudbury Ladies finished their league season away to Royston Town Ladies, 4th going into the match a single goal was enough to see the hosts claim the 3 points, the goalscorer, Grace Leslie. Promoted last season, Royston Town have found their feet in the Premier Division. AFC Sudbury end their campaign on 31 points, flirted with the title chasers all season much of the time in 4th will finish no lower than 6th once the rest have played out.

Billericay Town Ladies are the side that can overhaul them should they win their final league game of the season. Were at home this Sunday hosting local rivals Brentwood Town Ladies. Goals from Sarah Bovington, Katie Whitehead and captain Lindsey Morgan securing a 3-0 win in their penultimate league match at home to AFC Dunstable Ladies this coming Sunday.

ERWFL Plate

Colney Heath Ladies are through to the ERWFL Plate final awarded a home win in the semi-finals after opponents Ipswich Wanderers Ladies hit by injuries weren’t able to field a side. A 3rd successive final appearance in the Plate competition in its various guises with 2 losses previously Colney Heath having secured a top 2 finish in Division One this season will be hoping it’s 3rd time lucky.

Their opponents in the ERWFL Plate final will be Essex side, Hutton Ladies after they overcame opponents Stevenage Ladies Reserves in extra-time to secure their place in the final. At home with just 11 players available were down to 10 during the match two the scores were level at 2-2 after the 90 minutes, Hannah Marshall and Leah Littlechild on target for Stevenage. Hutton went on to find the winning goal in extra-time 3-2 the final score, Laura Allen netting herself a brace with Hayley Critchell also getting a goal. The League Plate and Cup Finals have been played one after the other on the same day recently and I am assuming that will be the case this time around but again will keep everyone posted.

ERWFL Division One

In ERWFL their was the one league game played on Sunday with Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies hosting Hertford Town Ladies both sides playing their final league game of the season both looking to end on a high. It was Hertford Town who were celebrating at the final whistle edging the win 2-1 with goals from Dee Gilbert and Freya Rampley. The win moving them up from 10th to 7th in the Division One table took them a while to find their feet at the higher level following promotion last season but ended the season with some good results in a good position to push on next season. Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies end the campaign with 22 points currently 9th have a talented group of players will be a little frustrated that they haven’t picked up more points.

Silver End United Ladies were awarded the home win after opponents Offley & Stopsley Women couldn’t field a team this Sunday the 3 point lifting the Essex side above them into 4th spot in the Division One table.

The Round-Up – ERWFL 26/03/17

It’s the time of year where you have to get the calculator out and work out all the different scenario’s a points needed to win a league title and several league across Women’s Football East are shaping up to be in from a grandstand finish, none other than the ERWFL Premier Division. Bedford Ladies and Haringey Borough Women have had fantastic season’s sharing the lead between them unbeaten for a long spell at the start of the season. A league cup semi-final for Haringey Borough Women too! April will be a huge month for both clubs.

Two of Acle United’s remaining league games are against Royston Town Ladies which won’t be easy, this Sunday they played the reverse fixture with Writtle Ladies having drawn 3-3 with them at home this weekend. Once again however the points were shared as Writtle came back to equalise 2nd half Leanne Stubbings making it 1-1.

Hannah Marshall and Emily Scofield with the goals for Stevenage. A League Plate semi-final to come for Colney Heath Ladies before they play Stevenage Ladies Reserves at home in their final game the maths says they can no longer be caught and 2nd place minimum is guaranteed and 2 sides should be promoted, Cambridge City Ladies have 5 games in hand you would expect them to be overtaken still you never know. Well done to Colney Heath Ladies

A good result away from home for Hertford Town Ladies on Sunday in Division One travelling to neighbouring Bedfordshire to play 4th placed Offley & Stopsley Women a hat-trick from Meike Gierig saw them take all 3 points home with them winning the game 3-2 their penultimate of the season after a shaky start to life in the ERWFL have found their feet and could yet climb a couple of places up the table.

The Round-Up – ERWFL 19/03/17

The Round-Up

ERWFL – Sunday 19th March

ERWFL Premier Division

Bedford Ladies remain 3 points clear at the top of the ERWFL Premier Division as they won away from home in their penultimate league match of the season. Away from home at the Len Forge Centre in Essex playing 7th placed Brentwood Town Ladies. Leah Cowan scored her 15th goal of the season for Brentwood however Bedford took all 3 points winning 2-1 in the finish with Natasha Fensome and Charlene Moreton scoring their goals. One league game left and it’s HUGE this coming Sunday at home to 2nd placed Haringey Borough Women.

It was 2nd versus 3rd as this Sunday as Haringey Borough Women travelled to Creasey Park to play AFC Dunstable Ladies. Haringey drew 5-5 with Writtle Ladies last Sunday were looking for the win this time around to keep the gap to Bedford at the top to 3 points. AFC Dunstable have had an excellent league campaign themselves were still in contention for the title themselves providing they could take maximum points from their final two league games and close down a superior goal difference. Those hopes were ended however as despite a 1st half goal from Samaira Khan on the half hour mark that saw the sides level at 1-1 at the break Haringey struck twice in the 2nd half to win the game 3-1 their goals scored by Klesha Darroux along with a brace for Julia Carruthers taking her goals tally for the season to 14. Haringey move onto 36 points 3 behind Bedford but with 2 games in hand. Play Bedford this Sunday will go ahead of them on goal difference should they win end Bedford’s own title hopes. A 3rd side still remains in the Premier Division title mix Acle United Ladies down in 5th have 6 league games left to play should they win them all they themselves could pip Haringey to the title and to add to the excitement both Acle and Haringey as due to meet in their final league games of the season.

A narrow 3-2 defeat at home to Bedford last Sunday ended AFC Sudbury Ladies own slim hopes of chasing down the title. The Suffolk side recovered from that disappointment this Sunday return home from Essex with all 3 points in the bag. Were playing Billericay Town Ladies. Megan Partridge scoring the only goal of the game to see AFC Sudbury to the victory.

For the 3rd successive league game Writtle Ladies had to settle for a point and not from the lack of scoring goals, it’s just that their opponents have matched them. 3-3 away to Billericay Town Ladies, then 5-5 away to Haringey Borough Women last time out Writtle in 7th were on the road again this weekend travelling to Hertfordshire to play 8th placed Royston Town Ladies. Again it was a high scoring draw with both sides scoring 3 to share the points. Emma Ridings hitting to into the back of the net for Writtle her 1st goals for the club this season, with Sophie Vale also on target with her 18th goal of the campaign. Two goals for Sammy Tinsley (pictured) took her goals tally to 33 for the season for Royston Town with Grace Leslie scoring too to see the points shared.

ERWFL Division One

A big win on Sunday at home for 2nd placed Colney Heath Ladies, moving back level on 36 points with leaders Cambridge City Ladies who were in County Cup action this weekend. Were hosting 4th placed Offley & Stopsley Women a single goal enough to see all 3 points won. No surprise to see the goalscorer was Holly Sheridan, enjoying a good season in front of goal hitting her 22nd goal of the season to win the game for Colney Heath. Cambridge City Ladies have plenty of games in hand at the top, several scenarios can play out but simply if Colney Heath Ladies win both their remaining league games they will secure 2nd spot at least in the ERWFL Division One table. They’re two remaining games against Stevenage Ladies Reserves.

Stevenage Ladies Reserves climb 2 places up the ERWFL Division One table after winning at home at the weekend up from 6th to 4th spot and with 4 games left against the top 3 sides will have a huge influence on final standings could yet have played themselves into the promotion picture. At home were playing Ipswich Wanderers Ladies this Sunday won the match 4-0 with 4 different goalscorers. Leah Littlechild, Steffany Cowell, Sherrie Evans and Hannah Marshall all on target.

A strong end to the season from Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies winning their 3rd successive league game at home hosting bottom side Hoddesdon Town Ladies. 2 goals each for Danielle Styles and Georgia Fraser plus a goal for Sophie Dowman seeing the Essex side to a 5-0 win in 8th with 2 matches left Little Thurrock could yet move up a couple more places before the end of the season.

The Round-Up – ERWFL 12/03/17

The Round-Up

Plenty of goals scored this Sunday in the ERWFL Premier Division with the 4 matches played seeing 27 goals between them! Acle United Ladies 4-3 Brentwood Town Ladies

ERWFL Division One

Level on 33 points at the top of the ERWFL Division One joint leaders Cambridge City Ladies and 2nd placed Colney Heath Ladies met each other on Sunday. Cambridge City have several games in hand on their rivals for the title as they played them at home. Just the 1 defeat in the league so far this season since winning promotion to the regional league Cambridge City started well, Colney Heath had chances in the 1st half however it was the hosts who took the lead eventually leading the game 3-0 at the break adding a 4th goal in the 2nd half before Colney Heath pulled one back with Holly Sheridan scoring her 21st of the season. Cambridge City also have a striker in red hot scoring form and it was another brace for Bella Simmons to move her onto 19 goals on Sunday with Charlotte Gillies also scoring along with a rare goal for captain Becca Fay to see Cambridge City go 3 points clear at the top with a 4-1 win.

The Round-Up – ERWFL 05/03/17

The Round-Up

ERWFL – Sunday 5th March

In a weekend hit right across the board by postponements the Eastern Region Women’s Football League programme survived virtually unscathed with just the Premier Division match between Histon Ladies and Royston Town Ladies falling foul of a water-logged pitch. A few sdies having access to a 3G surface helping matters.

ERWFL Premier Division

In the ERWFL Premier Division, Haringey Borough Women were looking to return back to the top of the table whilst leaders Bedford Ladies weren’t in action. A trip into Essex to play Brentwood Town Ladies at the Len Forge Centre. Amongst a host of sides below the top 3 looking to end the season strongly Brentwood Town had seen their recent good form dented with a couple of defeats in league and cup. Picked up a good point against Haringey Borough as the sides contested a 2-2 draw, a goal each for Leah Cowan and Georgia Holdaway cancelling out a brace for Haringey Borough’s Klesha Darroux who move to within a point of Bedford who have played 2 games more.

A goal for Megan Partridge was enough to see AFC Sudbury Ladies win all 3 points away to Colchester Town Ladies on Sunday the result lifting the Suffolk side above Billericay Town Ladies into 4th place. Have played 17 with 3 to play are now 5 points behind Bedford Ladies who they play next at home, close the gap to 2 points and thing’s will get very interesting.

Below AFC Sudbury Ladies are a host of sides who all have more games left to play and all of them with a strong finish could yet cause a upset in the title race. 3rd placed AFC Dunstable Ladies headed up to Norfolk at the weekend to play the side with more games left than everyone having just played 12 going into this weekends match Acle United Ladies need every Sunday left plus the odd midweek game to get their fixtures in. A good run of games is just what the squad needs however to mount a late challenge. Dunstable have been a strong side all season gunning for the title 3 points off the lead with 4 games left to play missed the opportunity to close the gap on the leaders as Acle United some times slow starters to a game got off to a flyer this Sunday as striker Jody Wells gave them the lead inside 2 minutes. AFC Dunstable pulled it back all square at 1-1 late in the 1st half. Wells scoring again early in the 2nd half her brace seeing the 3 points won moves Acle United up a place to 7th on 23 points 10 behind the leaders but have 4 games in hand. The business end of the season and the ERWFL Premier Division will see a few dramatic results before the end to be sure.

One of those came this very Sunday in Essex. Just a week ago Billericay Town Ladies claimed the 3 points away from home against Essex rivals Writtle Ladies winning 4-0. This Sunday saw the reverse fixture and both sides having been strongly represented by the Essex FA Women’s Representative side on Thursday night’s 3-0 win against Hertfordshire. At home this time Billericay Town Ladies found themselves 3-0 as the game entered the last 10 minutes. A brace for Sophie Vale and a goal for Abigail Fry seemingly putting Writtle in control of the game. Billericay Town were to stage an extraordinary comeback however as Vicky Kinsman reduced the deficit to 3-1 with 8 minutes left. Straight from the restart Paris Smith (pictured) lobbed the Writtle keeper to make it 3-2 then Paris found the back of the net again moments later to score the equaliser and see Billericay Town take an unlikely point from the match.

ERWFL Division One

Joint leaders, Cambridge City Ladies and Colney Heath Ladies in ERWFL Division One remain locked on the same points as they both extend the gap on the rest with contrasting away wins at the weekend. Both on 33 points look strong as they push for promotion to the Premier Division with 2 sides likely to be promoted. Cambridge City Ladies hold the advantage for the title as they have 8 games left to play before the end of the season 4 games more than Colney Heath. Cambridge City were away to 4th placed Silver End United Ladies on Sunday, a single goal seeing the league leaders leave Essex with another 3 points in the bag. Top scorer, Bella Simmons taking her goals tally to 17 for the season from 12 appearances.

Colney Heath Ladies in contrast were involved in an 8 goal thriller as they travelled to Bedfordshire to play Offley & Stopsley Women. The home side getting off to a great start going 2-0 up early on. Colney Heath responded immediately to pull it back to 2-1 with Holly Sheridan scoring the goal. Offley & Stopsley scored again however to lead 3-1 at half-time. A strong 2nd half performance from Colney Heath saw them come back into the game and claim all 3 points. Annie Hickey grabbing a goal to pull it back to 3-2 before Sheridan scored her 2nd of the game and draw her closer to 20 goals for the season to make it 3-3. Christina Freestone found the back of the net to put Colney Heath into the lead with Hickey scoring her 2nd goal of the game to see Colney Heath win 5-3.

Stevenage Ladies Reserves climb up into 5th place in the Division One table with a good result away from home on Sunday travelling into Suffolk to play Ipswich Wanderers Ladies. Sarah Payne scored twice in the game with a goal each for Leah Littlechild and Sherrie Evans to see them win the game 4-1 and move up into the top half of the table for the 1st time this season.

Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies were hosting Hutton Ladies on Sunday and it was a welcome 3 points gained after a long spell without picking up points in the league. Plenty of cup games interrupting in between. A narrow 2-1 win for Little Thurrock Dynamos their goals scored by Sophie Dowman and Rhianne Holmes.
