Aimee Durrant on the ball for Norwich City Ladies

A probing start from both sides putting the ball up into the opponents half without much penetration. Ellie Smith with the ball at her feet driving on for Norwich moving right works her way into the box her near post ball cut out by Chloe Shields for the corner, defended Acle hit Norwich on the break captain, Megan Todd carrying the ball on through the middle into the Norwich half spots Lauren Bullard running clear on the right wing plays the pass over the top into her path as she continues to make her way forwards receiving the return ball as she arrives in the box, closing in or goalkeeper, Hope Armstrong, squeezes the shot past her as she slides in at her feet, the ball running narrowly wide of the post.

Norwich’s Millie Daviss tackles Acle captain, Megan Todd

Smith busy early on getting forwards to press the Acle defend stealing possession 20 yards out shifts the ball to the right before having a strike at goal her effort wide. Tigi Robson winning the ball at the back for Norwich on the right plays the pass forwards for Natasha Snelling 25 yards out lays it out to Aimee Durrant hugging the right tough line bursting forwards she sends a cross in long across the six yard box, Kathryn Stanley up at the far post gets her head on the ball can only direct it back across the area, Shields getting it away for Acle.

Todd picks out Grace Birchall as she gets away in behind on the left wing sends the cross into the area, Norwich defending. A good tempo early on, Norwich pressing the ball, Durrant an outlet on the right keeping wide receiving the ball getting another cross into the area, Kate Pasque winning the header to clear for Acle this time. Broghan Scully coming on with the ball at her feet through the middle for Acle out to Birchall cutting inside from the left 20 yards out her shot low in towards the near post saved by Armstrong getting down to her right to push it behind for the corner. Armstrong claiming the ball for the set-piece.

Kate Pasque winning the ball for Acle United Women

Norwich with the ball on the left Stanley playing it back to full-back Alice Parker, she plays a long diagonal ball out to the right hoping the send Durrant clear in on goal, a little too much on the ball. Amber Rowland getting hold of the ball in the middle for Acle a driving run forwards, Norwich converge too many bodies to get through.

GOAL! Norwich take the lead have the ball out on the left moving into the Acle half a shot it lined up from distance a rasping effort driven in on target, Acle goalkeeper, Amy Bell doing well to glove the ball down, Snelling alert quickest to react on the follow-up getting onto the ball to send it into the back of the net 0-1.

Natasha Snelling putting Norwich into the lead.

Acle look for a quick response after falling behind push on into the Norwich half Birchall on the ball left side fires a fierce cross across the top of the area, Rowland making a good run just not quite able to take it in her stride, Norwich getting the ball safely back to Armstrong. The visitors hit Acle on the counter attack, Smith travelling at speed keeping the ball close to her feet as she drives on through the middle, slides a perfect ball in behind for Rosie George top of the area she opens up her body to send the ball past Bell as she comes sliding in, the ball running past her striking the post, the Acle defence scrambling it away.

Norwich City Ladies, Ellie Smith

Acle make a substitution, Rowland coming off on comes Ciera Flatt. A 2nd change soon follows, Rhianne Brister coming off for Naomi Cooper which sees Birchall move into a central attacking position. Norwich captain, Sasha Diston with a good ball forwards aiming to play Durrant in behind on the right, Pasque coming across tackling and winning the ball for Acle. Snelling is clipped, brought down as she pushes on towards the area a free-kick 20 yards out Snelling over it herself goes for goal a clipped effort that isn’t too far over the bar.

Acle United Women’s captain, Megan Todd

Todd sends a pass long for Bullard on the right, the cross dealt with by Norwich out to the left side, Cooper pressuring the ball regains possession carries it inside before sending a curling effort in towards the Norwich goal, does too much swerving in towards Armstrong who takes it in her midriff.

GOAL! Half an hour gone and the home side level the scores good build up play central the ball played out to Todd out on the right wing breaking forwards squares the cross back in to the top of the area Birchall with the run a great touch as she slides in to send the ball wide across the diving keeper and into the bottom corner of the net 1-1.

Norwich’s turn to put pressure on from the restart getting bodies forwards, Acle defence a little frantic as they manage to get the ball clear of the area. Abigail Tate has come on for Norwich replacing George in attack. Snelling right channel 20 yards out support from Daviss the two combining in front of the area, Daviss getting the ball past the challenge from Pasque her attempt at goal held by Bell at her near post.

Norwich City Ladies, Tigi Robson

Durrant with a strong run on the right wing lays a cross in with pace across the top of the Acle area, Tate bursting forwards can’t quite pick it up in her stride. Norwich with a 2nd change Summer Rogers coming on for Snelling. Scully with a piece of great defending for Acle getting across the the right to stop Durrant crossing in the corner wins her side a goal kick. Birchall with good work in the middle putting pressure on the Norwich back-line winning the ball, the shot taken early 30 yards out bounces harmlessly wide across the area.

Rogers getting the ball played into her feet from a throw-in on the left tries her luck from distance her strike wide of the far post. Stanley and Durrant swapping wings late in the 1st half the former now on the right has support from Daviss, one cross blocked by Goodfield, Stanley gets another go from the by-line the ball held by Bell at her near post.

Half-time Acle United Women 1-1 Norwich City Ladies

An entertaining 1st 45 minutes of football, passing quickly a good start from Norwich albeit Acle with the early chance to take the lead, both have enjoyed spells of pressure without dominating, the game flowing well, competitive but I expected nothing less, Norwich taking the lead, Acle coming back to level, the tie remained beautifully poised and not clues yet as to which way it might go.

Ciera Flatt on the attack for Acle United Women

Acle to get the 2nd half underway the low sun in their faces, Norwich with a change Snelling back on the field in place of Durrant. Diston with a great tackle early in to stop Birchall getting away as she is played on by Cooper. Smith making some great runs forwards carrying the ball on moves to the right this time before sending it on into the area, Pasque with Tate looking to pull off her shoulder intercepting the ball for Acle.

Abigail Tate looking to control the ball for Norwich City Ladies

Norwich starting  the 2nd half well, Rogers playing a ball up into the area, caught by Bell. Acle break Birchall left side her cross wild over the goal. Birchall keeps on going pushing on towards the area right of the D is brought to the floor, a free-kick awarded. A foot outside the area Birchall on the set-piece goes for power he shot put in over the goal.

Acle’s Naomi Cooper sliding in to tackle Norwich’s Millie Daviss

Now a first for Women’s Football East and I was beginning to wonder if I would actually see this as we are now well into the season, a sin bin offence. The sin-bin to be used for acts of descent. Smith with another surging run on the ball is brought down by Scully just over halfway, a sliding challenge but the ball taken clean both players down Smith with a reactive lash out, spotted by referee Ashley Tyne, Smith receives a yellow card. Foolishly Smith then gives the referee a clap the result 10 minutes in the sin-bin (the bench in this case) Norwich down to 10 temporally.

That of course gives Acle a boost knowing they have a player advantage push forwards Birchall on the left wing inside for Todd top of the area meeting it sends the effort over. Norwich regroup Daviss running on through the middle as they work the ball forwards well central threatens to run clear into the area, Anna Larkins doing fantastically to get across in front of her and play the ball at close range into Bell to kick clear.

Acle’s Pasque wins the ball high up the pitch on halfway a great clearance finding Bullard wide right running on behind sends a squared cross right along the top of the box 20 yards out Flatt making a run from midfield meeting it looking to beat the keeper sends the low driven shot under her dive past her but wide of the post. Birchall gets brought down in the middle again, Scully over the ball played high into the area, Armstrong calling for it catching unchallenged.

GOAL! Despite being down to 10 Norwich retake the lead getting forwards on the left side have a throw-in the ball dropped into Stanley she does well turning inside and closing in on the area lets fly with a shot looping up into the air, no doubt it’s lost in the low sun by Bell as it drops over her under the bar into the goal beyond, Stanley putting Norwich back into the lead 1-2.

Kathryn Stanley, puts Norwich back into the lead

Acle make a change with Scully coming off, ex-Norwich centre back Grace Parker coming on. Sin-bin time over it’s Durrant who returns to the field on place of Smith. Norwich press the advantage a ball in from the right into the box no-one dealing with it for Acle, Stanley putting it back in towards the near post a combination of goalkeeper and defender blocking the ball as it runs away for a corner. A high ball on long past the far post Snelling with a glancing header can only place it wide.

Norwich City Ladies captain, Sasha Diston

Parker gets the ball cleared at the back for Acle, turns into a great ball forwards for Birchall she turns finding Bullard breaking in behind on the right down the line her cross in across the six yard box dealt with by Robson at the far post for Norwich. Smith is back on now in place of Tate. Immediately involved Daviss playing her forwards drives on with the ball top of the box has Snelling running to her right slips the ball into her path Snelling blasting the shot wide. Smith coming forwards again riding a tackle, keeps her balance sending the ball wide right to Durrant she shoots from the angle Bell down low holding onto the ball a her near post.

GOAL! From the counter attack Acle come back to level the scores for the 2nd time in the match, Bell launching the ball forwards helped on to Birchall left of the area a mix-up between defence and keeper allowing the attacker in to round the keeper and send the ball into the back of the net. 2-2.

Bullard getting away on the right lifting a cross into the Norwich area headed away by McDonald at the near post. Acle quick to close in on the Norwich defence on the ball. End to end now Durrant on the right for Norwich to the by-line cuts the cross back in towards the area clearing everyone at the near post, Snelling in running in unmarked behind central her first time shot takes the ball over the bar.

Breaking through the middle Acle go direct Todd with the break in behind into the area, Armstrong sliding in to make the blocking save as she goes to shoot, Todd alert for the rebound the ball popping up and in behind the angle closing as she moves to the left almost gone as she shoot the ball hitting the post and spinning behind for the goalkick. A double change for Norwich late on, Robson and Rogers off, George back on along with Victoria Pleavin. Brister back on for Acle replacing Goodfield.

Time running out both sides sensing they can win this no signs anyone is preparing for extra-time, George winning Norwich a corner on the right, Acle defending try to counter, Diston breaking the attack up. Smith with a surging run forwards for Norwich, running into traffic Acle counter…

GOAL! the ball fired up field, helped on Birchall sensing a gap peeling away to the right now no one there coming back 25 yards out central has the Norwich defence beaten as she sets her sides on goal 20 yards out, Armstrong to beat, the keeper coming to close her down tries to narrow the angle, Birchall reading what she is going to do cutting the ball back across her dive and sending the ball racing low into the back of the net to fire Acle into the lead and with in complete a hat-trick 3-2.

Grace Birchall completes her hat-trick and wins the game at the death for Acle United Women

Little time left in the match Norwich with a free-kick inside the Acle half the ball has to be played up into the area, Durrant does get a free header but her attempt is over, the final whistle blows and Acle win at the death!

Full time Acle United Women 3-2 Norwich City Ladies

A dramatic end to a thrilling encounter, truth be told I could just have easily been talking about a Norwich win at the death such was the nature of the game, but I’m not Acle emerge triumphant. A deserved win in the context of the tie both sides giving it their all not much between them. Both with spells of pressure the goals as much as not coming against the run of play, both attacking at times Acle were better suited to hit on the counter attack, Norwich neutralising their width 2nd half especially. Good chances created at the end of the day this result could have gone either way and as disappointed as the losing side will this was a great cup tie to watch. A credit to both sides

Women’s Football East – Player of the Match

Onto the the Women’s Football East – Player of the Match for this Sunday afternoon’s match, was an entertaining game, good performances all over the pitch. For Norwich, I thought Millie Daviss had an excellent game in the middle of the park as did Ellie Smith with some powerful runs with the ball Aimee Durrant and Kathryn Stanley out on the flanks too. For Acle, Broghan Scully put herself about in midfield well, Megan Todd looked to create without getting much reward. Standing out though is Grace Birchall some impressive runs whilst operating wide, then moving into the middle creating chances and scoring what was a fantastic and important hat-trick she is today’s Player of the Match.

An entertaining County Cup tie this afternoon between two of the leading sides in Norfolk almost a pity it wasn’t the final itself a great advert for women’s football in the county. Hung around for a bit after the game just to check if anyone was measuring the pitch but I’m sure they weren’t :-). My thanks to both sides for their help with the team line-ups. I look forwards to the quarter final draw.

A contest between two sides currently at the top of their game in Norfolk. Both with an ambitious young manager at the helm, Bradley Mingay for Acle United, Alex Guy for Wymondham Town Ladies.

Road to the Final

Acle United Ladies received a bye in the 1st Round of the competition, whilst in contrast for Wymondham Town Ladies it was a repeat of last season’s final with a home draw against Thorpe United Ladies a 3-1 win for Wymondham knocking the County Cup holders out at the 1st hurdle. Onto the 2nd Round both Acle and Wymondham drawn away to Norfolk Women’s Division One opposition. Comfortable wins for both Acle putting 7 goals past Gorleston FC Ladies whilst Wymondham scored 8 without reply against Stalham Town Ladies.

Frustration in the quarter finals for Acle after seeing their tie away to Aylsham Ladies previous County Cup Finalists postponed twice they were eventually awarded the away win to progress to the last 4 of the competition. Wymondham were already scoring plenty of goals when they were drawn away to Fakenham Town Ladies a crushing 15-0 win seeing them through to the semi-finals. Acle away to King’s Lynn Town Ladies who had seen off Norwich City Ladies at The Walks, Acle edging the result on the day 2-1 to reach the Final. Wymondham were drawn away aswell in the semi-final taking on Norfolk Women’s Division One leaders Sprowston Ladies. Unbeaten in the league and scoring plenty of goals Wymondham did so again a 7-0 win seeing them into their 2nd successive final. After missing out on the trophy last season Wymondham have added determination to lift it this time around.

The venue for this evening’s final The FDC, Field of Dreams in Bowthorpe. Did wonder if we would see a game as the rain had been falling all day and heavy at times on the way there. However Norfolk FA declared the game on a slight concern about one goal mouth by the rain easing slightly. Not much cover beside the ground a small seated stand but despite the miserable conditions a good number had turned out most of the opinion this was going to be a good contest against two good sides.

Kindred spins in behind, Fretwell quick to recover comes back on her to slide in put the ball out for a throw top of the area. Patterson gets hold of the ball for Wymondham sends it forwards for Waters in the area up against Pasque the defender wins the challenge.

Half-time Acle United Ladies 1-2 Wymondham Town Ladies

An entertaining 1st half comes to an end Wymondham holding the narrow advantage could quite easily have been the other way around. Both sides coping with the conditions well are evenly matched and all 3 goals ave come from a set piece. More of the same in the 2nd half and the game could go either way, maybe all the way Acle having been involved in a penalty shootout the last time they were here.

Acle to get the 2nd half underway start the 2nd half brightly pressing forwards Rowland passing the ball left to Birchall her early diagonal ball into the area Todd closing in on the far post cant quite reach it. Flatt into Rowland as Acle come again she picks out Holden breaking away to the right her cross screws away behind at the near post. Birchall with the ball comes inside from the left digs a shot out from the edge of the area her strike racing wide across goal past the far post. Acle attacking with purpose at the start of the 2nd half, Holden with the ball 25 out Fretwell steps out of the back line to put in the tackle win the ball.

Todd with possession for Acle, Larkins races past her on the overlap drives a cross into the box Kindred has it at her feet looks to turn in behind Kett on top of her the defender winning the tackle. Todd takes the ball one cutting inside past one past two is stopped by Fretwell. Acle make a change Broghan Scully on for Flatt. Clarke intercepting the ball played up the line for Todd on the right. Larkins getting forwards on the right her cross going long Newcombe with the header to get the ball clear for Wymondham. A change for Wymondham Ladbrooke coming off, Brooklyn Cheal=Ferris on.

Wymondham have stood firm against the early Acle assault at the start of the 2nd half. Attacking up the other end on the left side Waters cutting inside with the ball is brought down. A little further out this time for O’Callaghan left corner of the area sends the ball in long towards the far post, Todd up to head the ball away to safety.

GOAL! Having weathered the storm Wymondham get forwards and score to extend their lead a good run from the back by full back Clarke as the ball won in the middle is spread out to Waters moving into the left channel, Clarke breaking into the box inside her the ball rolled into her sends it wide across the advancing goalkeeper at the top of the six yard box to make it 1-3.

Chasing the ball down on the right side Nicholls wins Wymondham a corner kick. The delivery in near post leaves a Wymondham player floored needing treatment. The Acle players rush to the bench to receive instruction. A change made Shields coming off at the back Erin Wilson coming on. Larkins moves inside to support Pasque, Cooper coming over to right back. Mollie O’Callaghan is struggling with injury needs to come off Ladbrooke is sent back on.

Birchall plays the ball in from the left looking to put Holden through on goal, O’Callaghan can see the ball safely into her body. Todd with an attack on the right into the box the ball defended by Kett, deflected away. Holden with it on left is tackled by Newcombe top of the area. Holden is fouled by Kett 30 yards out Birchall placing the ball in a central position driving in low strikes the wall, then Clarke is fouled as she races out to clear the ball. Another injury Rowland taking the knock this time is taken off Flatt coming back on.

Cheal-Ferris cuts the ball out as Acle look to release Cooper into space on the right. Birchall bringing the ball down strikes it on the half volley form all of 35 yards out her effort not troubling O’Callaghan. Alice Collins comes on for Wymondham in place of Patterson with lass than 10 minutes left to play. Acle push forwards left side the ball into the area defended the deflection coming to Cooper on the right 20 yards out her 1st time shot put wide of goal..

Birchall with the run into the area from the left the ball gets caught in the turf preventing her from striking it early hold’s onto possession taking it to the byline firing a cross in along the six yard box behind Cooper she tries to knock it back inside for Holden can’t find her Fretwell launching the ball up field. Ladbrooke tracking back into the area as Acle break forwards in attack is well placed to put in the block, the ball deflected out of the area Fretwell comes out quickly to clear the threat.

A corner for Acle the ball as Holden wins the ball races forwards into the area Ladbrooke back there again to slide in to block put the ball behind. The delivery from the right into the middle Birchall getting to the ball looks to turn in towards goal, is shoved to the floor I’m right in line with it and it looks a clear penalty but the appeals are dismissed play goes on. More bad news for Acle moments later as they are reduced to 10 Flatt shown a red card as she commits a foul in the middle, poor judgement kicking the ball in frustration.

Wymondham make a change bringing on Louise Hamilton-Rout in the closing stages for Nicholls. Holloway giving way too Patterson back on. Birchall with run up the left tacked by Newcombe. The game moving into stoppage time 6 minutes added. Birchall fouled wide on the left players come forwards from the back, the delivery in towards the near post O’Callaghan taking it cleanly not distracted by the runners closing her down.

GOAL! Acle press forwards looking for a goal attacking right play stretched Birchall and Kett are both down left side inside the six yard box as the defender puts in the challenge, the ball cleared comes back out to Cooper on the right play goes on, Kett struggling to her feet plays Cooper onside as she manages to get across into a central position to block Cooper’s initial strike the rebound coming straight back to her she shifts it inside and buries the ball into the back of the net this time 2-3.

Kindred returns to the field for Birchall as Acle have seconds left to try and find another goal. Is frantic out there, there isn’t time however the final whistle blows and Wymondham are triumphant winning the Norfolk Women’s County Cup for the 1st time in their history.

Full time Acle United Ladies 2-3 Wymondham Town Ladies

A good contest between two strong sides. Wymondham with the narrow advantage at half-time weathering the Acle assault early in the 2nd half breaking away to extend their lead. Defended well on the whole Fretwell and Kett strong in the middle of defence. A late goal for Acle ending up a consolation. A hard game to call before kick-off the result could have gone either way in the finish. Wymondham having a fantastic season wining promotion now league and cup double. One more game to go in the league back in action in less that 48 hours away to Histon Ladies where they will want to end the season unbeaten I am sure. Acle are back in league action too on Sunday a long trip down to Hertfordshire to play Colney Heath Ladies. Have another chance for silverware with the ERWFL League Cup Final yet to come.

Women’s Football East – Player of the Match

Several contenders once again for the Women’s Football East – Player of the Match, knew there would be. Megan Todd was excellent for Acle, Alice Ladbrooke strong in the middle for Wymondham as were their centre backs Lauren Kett doing well but like the Norfolk FA’s choice I’m going with Bethany Fretwell a very composed performance throughout the game.

2017/18 Norfolk Women’s County Cup Winners, Wymondham Town Ladies

Congratulations to Wymondham Town Ladies on there league and cup success.

Norfolk FA always put on a good final the staff always helpful and despite the awful weather a good number made the trip. An enjoyable game managed to keep my notepad dry somehow. 3 more finals coming up next week.

The Round-Up – Norfolk 25/03/18

The Round-Up

Sunday 25th March

Norfolk Women’s County Cup

One of countless matches postponed last weekend due to the snow fall King’s Lynn Town Ladies were hosting Acle United Ladies in the semi final of the Norfolk Women’s County Cup. Both sides playing in the ERWFL Division One North and Premier Division respectfully. The winner of the tie going on to face Wymondham Town Ladies in the Final to be played at the FDC on Friday 27th April.

Acle United started the match the stronger creating chances as they forced King’s Lynn back into their own half. It was the hosts however who opened the scoring midway through the 1st half the ball put into the back of the net by Oksana Imanalijeva. Acle United coming back into the tie to level the scores just before half-time captain Megan Todd making it 1-1. Acle United started the 2nd half as strongly as they had the 1st creating more opportunities in front of goal finally taking one in the 63rd minute midfielder Laura Holden scoring the goal to put them 2-1 ahead. Defending the lead Acle United had further chances but in the end held on for the 2-1 win to send them into their 3rd County Cup Final.

Norfolk Women’s League Cup

In another game postponed from last weekend it was also semi-final action from the Norfolk Women’s League Cup on Sunday a repeat of last season’s final with Thorpe United Ladies hosting current holders Bungay Town Ladies. The sides sharing a 7 goal thriller in the finish Bungay getting off to a great start were leading the game 3-1 at half-time. Thorpe United mounted a come back in the 2nd half scoring twice more to level the scores at 3-3 before Bungay came back to win the match 4-3 to reach their 2nd successive league cup final where they will play FC Sprowston Ladies on Sunday 6th May at Norwich United’s Plantation Park. Emily Leach netting twice for Bungay with a goal each for Nicola Hazell and Samantha Walker. Rebekah Lake, Shanice Sutton and Alice Smith on target for Thorpe United.

Norfolk Women’s Division One

In Norfolk Women’s Division One on Sunday, Emily Watts was making a welcome return to action for bottom side Long Stratton Ladies after over a year out of the game through injury. Jumped straight to the top of their goal scoring charts too as she netted a brace in the game for the side struggling at the bottom of the league. It was opponents Wymondham Town Ladies who came away from Long Stratton with all 3 points however as the scored 5 goals to take them up from 7th to 5th in the league table.

Stalham Town Ladies 4th in the Division One table were at home to North Walsham Angels Ladies in a local derby on Sunday a close game between the side, Stalham edged the result 2-1 to claim all 3 points for their 5th league win of the season.

Norfolk Women’s Division Two

A piece of sad news to bring from Norfolk Women’s Division Two and that is the unfortunate folding of another club in the East, Toftwood United Ladies. A Dereham boy myself growing up it’s sad to hear. The club has struggled for numbers this season however and with the mens club also going it was on the cards. Wishing everyone involved with Toftwood all the best for the future and hope to see everyone continuing in the game somewhere in the future.

A hat-trick for Bure Valley Wildcats, Charlie Cooper on Sunday

In Norfolk Women’s Division Two there were two matches played on Sunday. Fair to say it has taken Bure Valley Wildcats Ladies young side a little while to adapt to women’s football but after a tough start to life in the league the side has grown and developed well showing great form as they won their 3rd consecutive league match this Sunday to see the consolidate 4th position in the table. At home to Kirkley & Pakefield FC Ladies a strong 1st half saw Bure Valley Wildcats leading 3-0 at the break before going on to score another 5 in the 2nd half to win 8-0. Charlie Cooper top scoring in the match getting a hat-trick. Kiera Brown netting a brace along with a goal for Emma Macmillan her 1st goal this season, plus an own goal.

Another young side getting to grips with life in Division Two are Gorleston Rangers Ladies were away to Freethorpe Ladies on Sunday. A 1-0 win for Gorleston Rangers in the reverse fixture back in December their 1st in the league. Winning last time out earned another point away from home this Sunday Chloe Bailey getting a brace in a 2-2 draw. Freethorpe’s goal coming from Andrea Colbrook and Kiera Squires.

The Round-Up – 18/03/18

The Round-Up

Sunday 18th March

Here we are once again with another shortened version of this weekends Round-Up with the weather again playing havoc with the fixture lists another cold burst depositing snow across the country over the weekend saw just 11 matches survive across the East. The majority of those in Cambridgeshire too. Adds to the problem of an already congested fixture list with games piling up towards the end of the season. March has not been kind to football so far in 2018. Of those games that did get played it was thanks to the dedication and hard work of the host team in most cases to get their pitch in a playable state and an appreciative thanks to all those put so much in to do so. A total wipe-out of fixtures the the FAWPL this weeks action begins with the ERWFL.

ERWFL Division One North

One game in the ERWFL Division One North this Sunday in Cambridgeshire, Histon Ladies have seen a good proportion of their home matches at the Glassworld Stadium called off due to weather conditions but not this time around as they took on opponents, Ipswich Town Ladies Development. The hosts getting their noses in front on 10 minutes with Abi Davies scoring her 9th goal of the season. Ipswich Town getting back on level term with 10 minutes of the 1st half left the sides drawing 1-1 at the break. Histon retook the lead with 20 minutes left to play Davies getting her 2nd of the match, the 3 points made secure with Ipswich Town conceding a penalty as the game closed on the final 10 minutes captain Sophie Lanham scoring from the spot.

ERWFL Division One South

Hoddesdon Town Owls Ladies fresh from playing in their 1st ever Hertfordshire County Cup final last Sunday were hosting 2nd placed side Harlow Town Ladies in the only match to beat the weather in ERWFL Division One South this Sunday. The hard work by Hoddesdon to get their pitch playable paying off as they picked up a great result beating Harlow 2-1 to record their 3rd league win of the season. The goals scored by Hannah Kelly and Sian Owens.

Norfolk Women’s County Cup

Just one game surviving in Norfolk on Sunday for the Norfolk Women’s County Cup the competition down to the last 4. Sprowston Ladies leading Division One certainly the underdogs as they played hosted to Wymondham Town Ladies currently leading ERWFL Division One North. Sprowston making the decision early on Sunday to switch the match to the FDC’s Open Academy all weather pitch. Wymondham have a strong attack with plenty of goalscorers in their side, aren’t too many games where the sides top scorer, Laura Nicholls isn’t on the scoresheet and not so this Sunday as she scored in the 11th minute to put Wymondham into the lead. Nicholls involved in the next two Wymondham goals too setting up Mollie O’Callaghan to make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute, with striker Hannah Waters scoring to make it 3-0 at half-time.

Two goals early in the 2nd half putting Wymondham in full control of the tie with Alice Ladbrooke and Waters with her 2nd of the game making it 5-0. The pair both getting on the scoresheet again as the game entered the final 15 minutes Ladbrooke making it 6-0 with Waters going on to claim a hat-trick. A 2nd successive County Cup Final appearance for Wymondham they will play either King’s Lynn Town Ladies or Acle United Ladies who saw their match at The Walks postponed.

Cambridgeshire Women’s Invitation Cup

It was also County Cup semi-final weekend in Cambridgeshire both games surviving the snow that had blowed in, holders Cambridge United WFC from FAWPL South East Division One hosting Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership side, Newmarket Town Ladies. A three league gap between the sides, Newmarket very much the underdogs going onto the game but have tested themselves well against higher league opposition this season and as the 1st half drew to a close it looked as though the sides would go in level at the break. Cambridge getting a goal to put them 1-0 up in the 41st minute courtesy of striker, Lauren Gibson. A more comfortable lead for the hosts early into the 2nd half two quick goals seeing the lead increased to 3-0 with Kelley Blanchflower and Faith Hewitt firing the ball into the back of the net in the 47th and 49th minutes respectfully. That the final score as Cambridge United reach another Invitation Cup Final.

It will be a repeat of last season’s final pair too as Cambridge City Ladies also booked their final berth this Sunday, the side currently 2nd in ERWFL Premier Division hosting another side from the Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership, St Ives Town Ladies. A tighter scoreline this one with just a single goal enough to settle the semi-final. Charlotte Gillies getting the winning goal for Cambridge City.

Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership

Two games from the Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership this Sunday. 4th placed Cambridge City Ladies Development close the gap to 3rd placed Newmarket Town Ladies to just a single point after they came back from 1-0 down to win 2-1 their 5th successive win in league and cup. At home on Sunday taking on 5th placed March Town United Ladies. Eline Sorbye scoring both there goals in the 2-1 win her first this season.

Park Ladies are at last celebrating this season and will get tagged in a Round-Up for the 1st time in close to two season’s after they won their 1st ever match in the Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership this weekend. Has been a tough period for the club after they raced to promotion in their 1st season. A difficult period to follow as results went against them early on their 1st season in the Premiership players then leaving the club threatened it’s very existence for a little while but the club came through these tough times again this season results have not been with them bottom of the table without a point that finally changed this Sunday.

Park were at home to the side immediately above them, Cambridge University Women who themselves are having a tough season after being amongst the forerunners in the Premiership in recent seasons. Amy Newell leads the line for Park and she was on target for 5 goals on Sunday taking her onto 14 for the season as Park clinched their 1st 3 point haul with an 8-2 victory taking them to within a point of Cambridge University Women. Chantelle Abraham, Jenna Brown also scoring their 1st goals for Park with Sian Holcroft also to target. A victory that will do wonders for morale.

Cambridge Women’s Division One Cup

Three more group matches from the Cambridgeshire Women’s Division One Cup this Sunday. In Group C, Wisbech Town Ladies made it 3 wins from 3 to clinch top spot in the group and advance to the knock stage of the competition. Were at home to Orton Rangers Ladies. Lauren Rouse on target for Burwell Tiger’s goal. The other group match between Fulbourn Institute Bluebirds and Newmarket Town Ladies Reserves was called off, so it remains all to play for in the group.

Essex Women’s Division One

Also a total wipe-out of the fixture list in Essex on Sunday with just one league match surviving across the two divisions. In Essex Women’s Division One 4th placed Brentwood Town Ladies Reserves close the gap up to the top 3 to just 2 points with a comfortable result at home to Rayleigh Town Ladies on Sunday.  King’s Lynn Town Ladies getting the opportunity to play at The Walks again with all their home county cup ties played there. Football on a high in the town with all 3 King’s Lynn sides currently doing well in their respective leagues. The ladies side making the step up from county to regional league this season are doing fantastically well in the ERWFL Division One North on a great run of form, 4 points clear at the top of the table with just the one defeat so far in the league. A bye in the first round of the County Cup a tough draw and test in the 2nd round taking on Norwich City Ladies playing 2 leagues higher.

Norwich City Ladies return to the County Cup after a 3 season absence the FAWPL South East Division One side previously dominating the County Cup, a leading force in women’s football in Norfolk for a long time. Battling at the wrong end of the table the County Cup a welcome distraction and a chance for Norwich to pursue silverware. The footballing map in Norfolk has changed a little in their absence from the County Cup, 3 potential challengers to their dominance emerging, all 3 plying their trade in the ERWFL, all ambitious, Acle United Ladies, Wymondham Town Ladies and King’s Lynn Town Ladies themselves all wanting to reach the FAWPL themselves.

With the current County Cup holders, Thorpe United Ladies knocked out of the competition in the previous round by Wymondham Town Ladies, the County Cup is there for the taking.

The Walks the venue the large mainstand over looking a large pitch offering plenty of width. Seen plenty of action a little cut up, half the pitch shaded by the mainstand, a chilly but bright afternoon, no wind, great conditions for the match. The cafe open offering hot and cold drinks, with a barbecue outside that would tempt me at half-time.

Full time King’s Lynn Town Ladies 2-1 Norwich City Ladies

2-1 to King’s Lynn Town Ladies at The Walks to go through to the quarter finals of the Norfolk Women’s County Cup. A good performance from start to finish working hard as a team to give little away, press the ball in the middle and time their attacks. Norwich with more of the ball had opportunities to score but found it difficult to find any openings in behind their opponents defence. Was an entertaining game another great showcase for women’s football in Norfolk.

Women’s Football East – Player of the Match

A few contenders for today’s Women’s Football East – Player of the Match, goalkeeper Bryony Russell-Smith with some excellent saves. Shanice Burch at the back and Tiffany Forshaw up top too, but in the end it was a quality performance from King’s Lynn captain Becky Russell from the 1st minute to the last and she is today’s Player of the Match.

Another good game at The Walks, my thanks to both sides for their help again today and best of luck to King’s Lynn Town Ladies in the next round of the County Cup.
