FAWNL Southern Premier Division

  Crawley Wasps Ladies beginning life in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division as they did the last season winning the FAWNL South East Division One title with ease. 4 wins out of 4 at the start of the campaign to open up a 6 point lead at the top. A 7-1 midweek win away to Chichester City Ladies seeing them go top. Rebecca Carter and Charlotte Owen both scoring a brace Crawley were away again this Sunday taking on 2nd placed Yeovil Town Women. 4 leagues between the sides this time last season, Yeovil making a strong start dropping down to the 3rd tier 3 wins from 3 in league and cup, promised a close game. B

 Both sides coming close to the opening goal, Yeovil clearing off the line from a Crawley corner. Frankie Gibbs saving for Crawley the visitors striking in the final minute of the 1st half to take a lead into the dressing room with Rebecca Carter on target for her 3rd goal of the season. 1-0 to the good Yeovil starting the 2nd half well coming back to level the scores on 53 minute Annie Heatherson finding Sarah Wiltshire to curl a shot past Gibbs into the back of the net, Wiltshire’s 8th goal of the season already. Crawley are equipped to compete at this level and came back to retake the lead attacking midway through the 2nd half captain Naomi Cole brought down outside the box in front of the D, a threat from a set-piece up to take it herself arrowing a shot hard to nestle inside the goal, the winning goal for Crawley to take a 6 point lead.

 Whilst Crawley open up the gap at the top Sunday’s results saw others close the gap to 2nd. Plymouth Argyle Ladies joining Yeovil on 6 points moving into 3rd position with a strong performance at home on Sunday. Opening the season with a loss away to Crawley, the South West side bounced back well to win 2-0 away to Gillingham Ladies last weekend. Back on home soil this weekend were taking on newly promoted Keynsham Town Ladies who had lost their opening two fixtures 2-1 at home to Milton Keynes and on Thursday a narrow 1-0 loss away to Cardiff City.

  Plymouth starting well put in a good performance taking the lead midway through the first half, Jessie Jones brought down inside the box, captain Katie Middleton scoring from the spot. Amber Pollock then setting up two quickfire goals from Kayley Lane and Natasha Knapman with 10 minutes left in the first half saw Plymouth hold a 3 goal advantage at half-time. Knapman making it 4-0 with the game approaching the hour. Keynsham pulling one back as Fabiana Alborghetti netted from distance. The hosts going on to score late in the match Jessie Jones getting on the scoresheet before her shot in the 87th minute with put in on the rebound by Helen Bleazard. Plymouth winning 6-1.

   Plymouth now a host of sides on 6 points with 2nd to 6th all there with 2 wins each, Milton Keynes Dons Ladies making a fantastic start to the season winning their opening two fixtures were away to Gillingham Ladies this Sunday. A win and a loss for Gillingham to start the season like Milton Keynes have brought in several new faces over the summer. A solitary goal separating the sides at half-time, Gillingham 1-0 up after 14 minutes awarded penalty that they themselves admitted as harsh for handball inside the box Jade Keogh stepping up to score. The hosts making the better start to the 2nd half doubling their lead 2 minutes after the restart Georgia Pearch sending in a low shot off the post and in to make it 2-0. Gillingham going on to take control of the game midway through the 2nd half scoring a 3rd with Grace Harrison played through one on one with the keeper, 5 minutes later Harrison scoring again chesting in an Ellie Jeffkins free-kick. Milton Keynes rallying finishing strong, chances created into the last 5 minutes new signing Jessica Driscoll scoring from a free-kick, a 2nd added in the 88th minute with another new recruit Dominika Netschova making it 4-2, not enough as they lose their first league game dropping to 4th, Gillingham joining the top half sides on 6 points.

   Cardiff City Ladies the other side in amongst the top half pack on 6 points recovering from an opening day defeat to Gillingham Ladies to win their next two. Close games all a 1-0 loss to Gillingham, Cardiff winning at home on Thursday evening leaving it late with Kylie Nolan scoring in the 75th minute to seal a 1-0 win against Keynsham Town Ladies. A first league win under their belts the Welsh side making the trip to the north of the capital to face Watford Ladies this Sunday. Jasmine Turner giving Cardiff the lead on 11 minutes lobbing the keeper from 30 yards to make it 1-0. A narrow lead at half-time Cardiff found the back of the net for a 2nd goal 10 minutes into the 2nd half Chloe Lloyd volleying in from outside the box. Watford pushing the visitors hard looking for a reply the Cardiff defence holding firm as they secured the 3 points.

No league game for Portsmouth FC Women since the opening day of the season losing 2-0 at home to Watford, a 2-0 win 7 days later against the same opponents in the FAWNL Cup Determining Round. Playing again this Sunday were at home once again taking on bottom Hounslow Women who themselves were without a point losing their opening two fixtures. Tamsin De Bunsen capitalising on a defensive mix-up to put Portsmouth into the lead inside the opening minute. Portsmouth controlling the early stages without creating a clear cut opportunity. The post struck in the 35th minute, Portsmouth doubling the advantage a minute later with Rebecca Bath striking from distance. A 2-0 lead at half-time Portsmouth were dominant De Bunsen adding a 3rd and her 2nd of the game taking the ball around the keeper to make it 3-0 on 52 minutes. Jade Bradley blasting in a screamer from 30 yards out making it 4-0 on the hour. Portsmouth on top taking control to score 4 more Bath with her 2nd from the penalty spot. Charmaine True brought down for the penalty going on to score a brace, time for an 8th goal 3 minutes from time with substitute Eilidh Currie scoring from inside the box. 

Oxford United Women finally got their league season started this Sunday postponed games seeing them miss out on the opening day and last weekend they were in league action at last at home to Chichester City Ladies this Sunday. The visitors with a difficult start to the season losing their opening 3 league matches. Oxford starting the game well opening the scoring in the 11th minute, Daisy McLachlan joining from Portsmouth cutting in from the left to shoot and find the top corner. A strong spell for the hosts Georgia Timms making it 2-0 in the 18th minute getting on the end of a cross. McLachlan adding her 2nd of the game 2 minutes later in off the post to see Oxford into a 3-0 lead. Emily Allen heading in a goal late in the first half to see Oxford lead 4-0. The hosts continued pressing for further goals 2nd half Lauren Haynes coming closest striking the crossbar. Oxford starting with a win.

FAWNL South East Division One 

Three wins from three to start the new season, Essex side Billericay Town Ladies have started their 2nd season as they did last season following promotion to the FAWNL for the first time. Looking strong again this season in the early stages. Karissa Rodney scoring a hat-trick in their midweek 4-0 win over local rivals AFC Basildon Women. Esme Lancaster also on target. Newly promoted with Crawley Wasps Ladies last season the pair ran away with it at the top Billericay eventually losing ground in the title race finished 2nd some 13 points ahead of the chasing pack. Competitive below the early challengers are starting to emerge.

   Enfield Town Ladies finishing 3rd last season amongst them bolstering their squad over the summer travelled to Billericay this Sunday. Winning 5-1 away to Stevenage Women in midweek also had a player o target for a hat-trick, Beth Lumsden one of their new signings with Nuala McKevitt and Katherine Long also scoring. Two wins and a draw from their opening three fixtures Enfield found themselves trailing to an early goal as Karissa Rodney was on target for her 5th goal of the season. Enfield getting back on level terms with 10 minutes left in the 1st half winning a penalty Beth Lumsden stepping up to score to see the sides level at half-time. Both sides coming close in the 2nd half Grace Brooks saving in goal for Enfield the visitors with a goal ruled out for offside. A point a piece at the final whistle.

Two points dropped for Billericay sees the chasing pack close up Enfield stay 3rd, in between the pair joining Billericay on 10 points are Ipswich Town Women. Opening their season with a draw Ipswich have since won 3 on the bounce although they left it late to win the 3 points this Sunday at home to Actonians Ladies. Ipswich coming into the game off the back of a midweek East Anglian derby win at home to Norwich City Women the game watched by a huge crowd of 761 Ipswich won 4-1. Actonians winning too in midweek playing their rearranged FAWNL Cup Determining Round game with AFC Wimbledon Ladies winning 2-0. 

  Ipswich getting off to a good start at The Goldstar Ground the hosts leading 1-0 inside the opening 10 minutes with Sophie Peskett scoring the goal. Actonians getting through on goal five minutes later denied by Leonie Jackson, the U21s keeper making her 1st senior start. Half-chances after that for both sides Ipswich holding the narrow advantage at half-time. Natasha Thomas firing Ipswich into a 2-0 lead midway through the 2nd half struck the crossbar soon after. Actonians not out of it coming back to make it 2-1 with 12 minutes left Jennifer Laidlaw getting the goal. A dramatic finish to the game Peskett hitting the bar the game into the final 10 minutes. Two minutes left and Actonians were level Caroline Bisson sending the ball home to make it 2-2. A blow for Ipswich they went straight up the other end and a diagonal pass into the area form Zoe Barratt picked out the run of captain Amanda Crump who took it in her stride to slot under the keeper to win the game 3-2.

5 sides remain unbeaten in FAWNL South East Division One and having played a game less than the top two both Leyton Orient WFC and AFC Wimbledon 4th and 5th respectfully are 3 points behind the leading pair. Leyton Orient WFC winning 5-1 at home to Cambridge City Ladies on the opening day were held 1-1 away to Enfield last time weekend. Back at home this weekend were hosting Norfolk side Norwich City Women. The game played at the Breyer Group Stadium the hosts took the lead inside the opening quarter hour Sophie Le Marchand played through to fire home. Leading 1-0 at half-time Leyton Orient created more openings eventually finding a 2nd goal midway through the 2nd half Hayley Barton’s corner headed in by Le Marchand. Into the last 10 minutes and Leyton Orient pressed home their advantage Le Marchand turning provider for Barton to score. Le Marchand smashing in a shot to complete her hat-trick in the 85th minute. 5-0 in the final minute another corner for the hosts put straight in by taker Barton.

AFC Wimbledon Ladies starting the season with a draw away to Ipswich backed it up with a 2-0 win over Cambridge United WFC. Cup action in midweek were back at home this Sunday taking on Stevenage FC Women. The visitors hitting the woodwork twice early on whilst Te’a Oldroyd keeping goal pulled off some great saves to deny the hosts. Wimbledon taking the lead late in the 1st half getting a goal through captain Katie Stanley to put them 1-0 on 38 minutes. Both sides starting the 2nd half brightly Wimbledon getting their 2nd with 55 minutes played good work from Rosie Russell before Stanley on target with her 2nd of the match. An hour gone and Wimbledon extended their lead to 3 Helen Ogle with a screamer striking the crossbar soon after. Stevenage kept going getting it back to 3-1 with 10 minutes left Louise Godden scoring. Wimbledon straight back with a goal by Sophie Manzi making it 4-1. Stevenage’s tun to get down the other end and score a minute later Amy Makewell making it 4-2 the late fightback not enough Wimbledon with the 3 points.

AFC Basildon Women have added several new faces to their squad as they begin life back in FAWNL South East Division One. One win so far from their opening 3 league games were beaten 4-0 in midweek by local rivals Billericay Town Ladies. Travelled to Cambridgeshire this Sunday to take on newly promoted Cambridge City Ladies who claimed their 1st league point since promotion in midweek following a 2-2 with their local rivals Cambridge United WFC. Goals from Holly Turner with her 1st of the season and Kelly Wealthall seeing the Essex side leading 2-0 at the break they doubled the tally in the 2nd half winning the game 4-0 with Nicole Learner and Jodie Osborne on the scoresheet with their 1st goals. Their 2nd win of the season putting them into the top half of the table.

Cambridge United WFC getting off the mark with their 1st point of the season away to their Cambridge rivals were back at The Premier Plus Stadium in St Neots this weekend looking for their 1st win of the campaign playing newly promoted Kent Football United the only side without a point now in South East Division One. Captain Kayleigh-Anne Burt getting Cambridge off to a great start scoring at the near post from a corner kick inside the opening 5 minutes. Mollie Coupar nipping in to win steal the ball off the keeper rounding her to put the ball into an empty net making it 2-0 to Cambridge on the half-hour. 2-0 up at half-time a 3rd goal coming in midway through the 2nd half Charlotte Crisp playing the ball through for striker Kelley Blanchflower to score. Kent pulling it back to 3-1 with 20 minutes left Megan Burrows with the goal. Cambridge United WFC with their 1st win of the season up to 7th.

FAWNL Southern Premier Division

Back to the league this Sunday after the FAWNL Cup’s Determining Round took centre stage last weekend. 4 games played in the Southern Premier Division whilst Oxford United Women saw yet another league game postponed meaning they will have to wait until next Sunday to get their league campaign underway. The top 3 after the opening round of fixtures winning again to maintain 100% starts.

  Yeovil Town Women scoring 16 goals in their opening two fixtures were at home for the first time this season taking on Chichester City Ladies. Despite creating a host of chances in the opening period Yeovil were held to a goalless draw at the break. More of the same at the start of the 2nd half, changes made Katie Jones and Erin Bloomfield joining the action for the hosts the latter opening the scoring from a corner the in to head the ball missing Bloomfield getting a second opportunity to turn the ball in to make it 1-0. Sarah Wiltshire amongst those creating the chances getting one to count to make it 2-0 lobbing the keeper. A curled effort from Kelly Aldridge securing a 3-0 victory for Yeovil who stay top.

   Crawley Wasps Ladies newly promoted to the Southern Premier Division winning their opening league game a fortnight ago to move up from 3rd spot to 2nd in the table with a solid win at home to Hounslow Women this Sunday. Held a narrow advantage at half-time leading 1-0. Charlotte Owen scoring in the 12th minute from a corner that wasn’t cleared. Maria Ledezma-Viso and Kemina Webber introduced to the action for Crawly in the 55th minute the pair making an impact Webber capitalising to double Crawley’s advantage on 66 minutes. Five minutes later Crawley were awarded a penalty as Hope Nash was fouled inside the box. Captain Naomi Cole making no mistake from the penalty spot to make it 3-0. Rachel Carter thumping the ball home to seal a 4-0 win to the hosts with 15 minutes left.

   Milton Keynes Dons Women continue their fantastic start to the season, again on the road a long trip to play league newcomers Keynsham Town Ladies who were playing their first league match of the season. Last season’s South West Division One champions taking the lead midway through the first half. MK Dons coming back to level the scores in the final minute of the first period Rebecca McShane with the ball in, Anya Kinnane heading home with her first of the season to make it 1-1. A penalty saved in the 65th minute by Keynsham’s goalkeeper keeping the scores level. The game heading into the final 15 minutes when a fantastic piece of counter attacking play saw MK Dons break from a Keynsham corner to score the winning goal, Leah Littlechild picking up the ball outside her box travelling with pace 60 yards into the opposing box to square across the face of goal, Jade Bell newly signed to the club keeping pace with her arriving at the far post to turn the ball in netting her 1st goal for the club, winning the 3 points. MK Dons 3rd in the table.

After losing their opening two fixtures Plymouth Argyle Ladies travelled to Kent this Sunday to play Gillingham Ladies who had started the season with a 1-0 victory away to Cardiff. The visitors making a great start to the match leading 1 nil after just a minutes play, Rebecca Dandridge firing the ball into the bottom corner from the edge of the area. Gillingham coming close to levelling the scores striking the woodwork three times the score remaining 1-0 to Plymouth at half-time. Natasha Knapman opening her account for Plymouth 3 minutes into the 2nd half giving them a 2 nil advantage. Gillingham pressed for a goal Plymouth determined to hold on to the clean sheet got it the 3 points seeing them up to 5th.

FAWNL South East Division One

Just 1 side holding onto a 100% winning record at the start of the season after 2 games played in South East Division One. Billericay Town Ladies travelling up to Ely to play newly promoted Cambridge City Ladies. The deadlock not broken until late in the first half, Jay Blackie with a good ball on into the area for Zoe Rushen to fire the visitors into the lead. The Essex side leading 1-0 at the break. Rushen was on target again 11 minutes into the 2nd half to double the lead Blackie again the provider Rushen heading past the keeper. The 3 points made secure with 20 minutes left to play, Billericay on target fro a corner the combination the other way around this time Rushen sending the ball in for Blackie to score. Billericay winning 3-0 2 wins from 2.

  Two more side hoping to continue from opening day wins were Enfield Town Ladies and visitors Leyton Orient WFC meeting on Sunday. A 5-1 opening day win for Leyton Orient they took the lead in the match Hayley Barton scoring direct from a corner in the 12th minute. The visitors doing well early on creating opportunities. Naomi Ogunde with a great save tipping over a well struck effort from Katherine Long in the 37th minute. From the resulting corner Enfield found the leveller, captain Nuala McKevitt scrambling the ball over the line to see it tied 1-1 at half-time. Both goalkeepers called into action in the 2nd period producing fine saves Enfield striking the post late in the game it remained 1-1 until the final whistle to see the points shared.

 A draw on the opening day of the season for Ipswich Town Women at home to AFC Wimbledon, the Suffolk side made the trip down to Kent this Sunday to face newly promoted team, Kent Football United. Staring well Ipswich took the lead inside the opening 5 minutes, Natasha Thomas shot rebounded back to Sophie Peskett on the edge of the area she smashed it back into the bottom corner to open her account. The positive start continuing Ipswich doubled their lead on 12 minutes Zoe Cossey’s shot taking a rebound this time skipper, Amanda Crump on hand to score and make it 2-0. Crump scoring again on 33 minutes seeing Ipswich end a good first half 3-0 in front. More opportunities in the 2nd half Peskett finding the back of the net again in the 78th minute with her 2nd of the game. The 4-0 win lifting Ipswich up to 3rd.

   AFC Wimbledon Ladies starting with a draw away to Ipswich, were at home this Sunday facing Cambridge United WFC who ha suffered late heartbreak in their 2 previous matches to miss out. First half goals from Helen Ogle on 28 minutes and Sophie Manzi in the 36th securing a 2-0 lead at half-time, AFC Wimbledon continued to hold onto their clean sheet in the 2nd period to record their first win of the season.

   Actonians Ladies winning their opening league match away from home were the hosts this weekend as they took on Essex side, AFC Basildon Women who had started life back in South East Division One with a loss. Actonians taking the lead on 10 minutes as Catherine Murphy fired them into the lead. Basildon coming back into it 10 minutes later to level with Kelly Wealthall scoring her first goal for the club. Wealthall then going on to put Basildon into the lead on 37 minutes, the advantage to the visitors at half-time. Wealthall celebrating her hat-trick as she scored her 3rd 5 minutes to the 2nd half to give Basildon a 2 goal cushion. Actonians reducing the deficit in the final minute as Lafa Ucha volleyed home not enough as Basildon took thier first 3 points of the season 3-2.

  A first win of the season too away from home for Stevenage Women. A few missing as they suffered defeat to Yeovil Town Women in the Determining Round of the FAWNL Cup last weekend they travelled to Norfolk with a few back to face Norwich City Ladies playing at home for the first time this season. The visitors going 1 nil up inside 15 minutes Ashleigh Deacon setting up Amy Makewell to score. Norwich getting back on level terms 10 minutes later. Stevenage back into the lead on the half hour Charlotte Ryan with the fantastic ball forwards controlled by Jenny Nagle and fired across goal for Makewell to net her 2nd of the game. Norwich’s Hope Armstrong saving well to deny Nagle a goal moments later the hosts getting up the other end one on one with the keeper only to strike the bar. Nagle getting her first FAWNL goal for Stevenage with 3 minutes of the 1st half left see them lead 3-1. A 4th goal coming early in the 2nd half Ryan up from the back there to put Makewell’s corner home at the near post. 4-1 the winning score.

The Round-Up

Sunday 18th August

 Here we are again the start of another new football season, another exciting few month ahead across the East and beyond in the case of the FAWNL where Women’s Football East will once again be covering the Southern Premier Division and South East Division One. The quality of both leagues increasing year upon year. Plenty of transfers made over the close season several catching the eye and a good number making their mark on the opening Sunday of the season as you shall read below. 

  Feeling far from prepared for the season ahead behind with the website updates but had my reasons as most of you will have seen if not refer to the post further down the page for more details. Will get there just a little later than I’d like to be. Got to plough on however.

FAWNL Southern Premier Division

A 12 strong Southern Premier Division once again, and hope that will remain the case a postponement on the opening day seeing Keynsham Town Ladies newly promoted to the league unable to play Oxford United Women. Crawley Wasps Ladies the other side promoted to the league storming to the South East Division One table following promotion last season and see no reason why they will not be amongst those at the top end of the Southern Premier Division this time around. A name change as QPR Women move to join forces with Hounslow Women to create a new side. Not a total split from QPR itself as the team and name are retained within the regional set-up below.

  Another newcomer to the league albeit not by their choice former FAWSL 1 side Yeovil Town Women. Often punching above their weight a popular club amongst many a neutral were unable to obtain a license for the Championship. That saw the club appeal for new investment and since then a new owner has come in whilst the commitment to women’s football within Somerset and beyond remains as strong and committed as it ever was. 

  It was to Hounslow that Yeovil travelled on the opening day of the season and hit the ground running back in the 3rd tier of women’s football. Anne-Marie Heatherson getting Yeovil off to a flying start with an early opening goal. Meesha Dudley-Jones on target to make it 2-0 to the visitors with Heatherson finding the top corner to make it 3-0. Kelly Aldridge scoring her first of the season too to see Yeovil leading 4-0 at half-time. Aldridge quickly adding to the scoreline with her 2nd of the match after the restart. Sarah Wiltshire returning to Yeovil after playing for Tottenham Hotspur Women will be a strong addition at this level struck the post before opening her account from a free-kick to make it 6-0. Aldridge completing an opening day hat-trick to see Yeovil in 7th heaven. The goals kept coming as Wiltshire matched Aldridge with 2 more goals to also claim a hat-trick on the opening day to see Yeovil top the Southern Premier Division table.

   Moving into 2nd spot in the Southern Premier Division table after the opening Sunday results are Milton Keynes Dons Women. Promoted to this level for the first time in their history last season took a little time to settle but were comfortable in the finish securing a 9th placed finish. Have made a number of additions to their squad this time around as they look to push on. Were away on the opening day playing last season’s 3rd placed finishers Chichester City Ladies who for a good portion of the season were up their with eventual champions Coventry United Ladies. A tough start to the season this time around as Milton Keynes made a fine start. Rebecca McShane, Vicky Neal, Dominika Netschova and Jessica Driscoll amongst those joining the squad. Two of those scoring the winning goals. McShane joining from Watford putting Milton Keynes it the lead inside the opening quarter hour. Netschova scoring on her competitive debut too making it 2-0 in the 35th minute. The 3 points secured 2nd half as Netschova found the back of the net in the 65th minute to seal a 3-0 away win.

  Crawley Wasps Ladies have once again added to their squad as they prepare to take another step up the women’s football pyramid this just their 2nd season in the FAWNL. Just one league defeat last time around started this season with a 2-0 home win over Plymouth Argyle Ladies. Samantha Pittuck joining Crawley after a season with their South East Division One rivals Billericay Town Ladies that saw her score 18 goals in 19 appearances. Was quickly off the mark with her new side putting Crawley into the lead midway through the 1st half. The hosts doubling the lead with 10 minutes gone in the 2nd half sending a looping ball in from the top of the box. Megan Stow shown a straight red card saw Crawley down to 10 with 25 minutes left to play, held onto a clean sheet however to begin the season with a home victory.

  Watford FC Ladies began their Southern Premier Division campaign with a trip to the South Coast to play Portsmouth FC Women. A number of new additions to the Golden Girls squad over the summer. Two starting on Sunday midfielder Megan Chandler and goalkeeper Nina Wilson with Ocean Rolandsen making the move form London Bees and Emma Beckett who was at Tottenham Hotspur Women last season named on the bench. It was a familiar name however that got the first goal of the season, Helen Ward netting 18 goals last time around, getting her account opened in the 15th minute to fire Watford into the lead, another coming for Ward in the closing moments of the first half as she struck to make it 2-0. A clean sheet kept intact in the 2nd period seeing Watford journey home with 3 points on the back.

  Cardiff City Ladies announcing before their opening fixture that the rules had changed to allow them to compete within the FAWSL/Championship should they win promotion. A runners-up finish last time around the Welsh side often amongst those challenging at the top of the Southern Premier Division were hosting Kent side, Gillingham Ladies. 9 new signings made by Gillingham manager Jack Wheeler over the summer including the return of former captain Jade Keogh, she along with Hannah Wheeler who spent last season with Championship side London Bee and ex-Charlton player Jess Carpinini all starting Sunday’s game with two further additions both ex-Charlton, Ellie Jeffkins and Georgia Pearch named on the bench. Gillingham enjoying their long trip to Wales as they opened the scoring with a fantastic goal finished by Grace Harrison. A slender lead Cardiff had an opportunity to level on 58 minutes awarded a penalty Cori Williams seeing her shot  saved by Gillingham goalkeeper Cara Davies as she helped them to secure and opening day victory.

FAWNL South East Division One

  Crawley Wasps Ladies and Billericay Town Ladies were the two sides gaining promotion to the FAWNL last season both making their debut at this level and taking the league by storm both strengthening their squads were neck and neck for a time at the top before Crawley losing just one game all season that against Billericay going on to finish champions and gain promotion. Will Billericay be as strong again this season or will the others catch up? Has been alot of player movement in the league and several sides have made notable additions was very competitive below the top two and expect that to be the case this time around. Cambridge City Ladies and Kent Football United the promoted sides this time around both again making their bow at this level a tough act for the newly promoted pair to follow. A new era begins for AFC Basildon Women formerly C&K Basildon relegated from the Southern Premier Division. Amongst those making several new additions to their squad are buoyant going into the new season with renewed optimism.

The FAWNL South East Division One is where the season begins for Women’s Football East, the first of many match reports that shall be produced over the season across all 15 leagues under the umbrella. A new era too for Cambridge United WFC as they move to a new home after spending 3 seasons playing at Mildenhall Town FC. St Neots Town FC’s Premier Plus Stadium their new base for home games and training closer to Cambridge. Their opponents familiar as they took on Enfield Town Ladies. A great season for the visitors last time around finishing 3rd. Ex-Cambridge player Laura Baker amongst their new signings as they started the game strongly taking the game to Cambridge creating much of the early chances opened the scoring in the 20th minute, new signing Beth Lumsden with a brilliant flick in the middle to release striker Katherine Long in behind the Cambridge defence caught high, goalkeeper Savannah Smith well off her line Long struck early sending the ball angling past the keeper and one into the empty net to open the scoring. Cambridge gaining in little momentum late in the first half won a corner in the final minute the ball cleared out to midfielder Charlotte Crisp her touch and shot were excellent from range as she sent the ball in towards goal dipping in front of the diving keeper to sneak in inside the post to see the sides drawing at the break. 

A better start to the 2nd half saw Cambridge apply pressure to Enfield higher up the pitch and chances were fashioned. Enfield making changes to counter the home side coped with the threat a physical and competitive game as it always is between the pair the game could have gone either way 2nd half, Enfield finding a bit more late on as Cambridge tired breaking in the closing moments a cross from the left deep kept alive by Anna Re sent back in across the six yard box the Cambridge defence stretched, Laura Baker was well positioned central to apply the touch and score the winning goal. Tough away trips for both the newly promoted sides on the opening day of the season with Cambridge City Ladies, ERWFL Champions last season travelling to London to play last season’s 5th placed finishers Leyton Orient WFC. An early goal for the hosts with Hayley Barton setting Leyton Orient on their way in the 3rd minute. Cambridge City coming back to level in the 15th minute with a goal for Karly Tolentino on her debut. Leyton Orient were back in front 10 minutes later with Egle Trezzi opening her account to see the hosts 2-1 up at the break. Leyton Orient having the better of the 2nd half with captain Danielle Griffiths putting them 3-0 up on the hour. Sophie Le Marchand adding a 4th goal with 15 minutes to go, 2nd half substitute Belen Ripoll Douton making it 5-1 to Leyton Orient with 2 minutes left on the clock, enough to see them top the league after the opening day results.

   A short trip up into Essex for Kent Football United as they made their FAWNL bow taking on last season’s runners-up, Billericay Town Ladies. Plenty of experience within the Billericay squad the host opened the scoring on 20 minutes, 15 goals to her name last season Jay Blackie getting the Essex sides opening goal of the season. Danica Dougal scoring with 5 minutes left of the first half to see Billericay leading 2-0 at half-time. 32 goals for Zoe Rushen last season she got her account up and running 12 minutes into the 2nd half lobbing the keeper to make it 3-0. Billericay’s captain Lindsey Morgan scoring soon after to bring up the Essex sides 4th. Kent Football United had chances themselves were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes left on the clock Amy Russ coolly sending the ball into the bottom corner to score their first goal in the FAWNL. Blackie on target with her 2nd of the game restoring Billericay’s 4 goal cushion. Kent Football United capitalising scoring a scrambled goal in the 88th minute with Shannon Burke the scorer.

Greg Dimsey the new manager in charge of Norwich City Women’s (newly renamed) first team this season as they started the season with a trip down to Essex to take on AFC Basildon Women. A new era beginning for both looking to make their mark on the league. Basildon bringing in a host of new players, with experience at this level and young emerging talent alike. Ex-Ipswich players Cassie Craddock and Harriet Petley along with Cerys Adams and Poppy Binding making their Basildon debuts. The visitors from Norfolk opening the scoring with Aimee Durrant heading in to make it 1-0 within the opening minute. Chelsea Garrett top scoring with 14 goals last season on target to see Norwich go 2 nil in front. Sophie Spencer-Webb pulling a goal back for Basildon before half-time. The hosts then getting back on level terms at the start of the 2nd period with Binding scoring. Norwich added to their attacking threat late last season bringing in Megan Todd and she has the potential to make a huge impact in South East Division One, scoring twice she helped Norwich secure a 4-2 win to go 3rd in the table.

   Two more sides that will be expecting good campaigns this time around too met on the opening day with Stevenage Women (also newly renamed) taking on Actonians Ladies, both making new additions to their squads, both featured an ex-AFC Wimbledon attacker. Jenny Nagle amongst the starters for Stevenage, Caroline Bisson was a starter for Actonians. Amy Makewell captaining Stevenage getting the hosts opening goal of the season to see them leading at the break. Bisson scoring for Actonians drawing them back on level terms 15 minutes into the 2nd half, then just as it was between Cambridge and Enfield it was late heartbreak for the hosts too as Bisson struck again in the closing moments to win the game 2-1 for Actonians.

   A dominant display at home for Ipswich Town Women however they had to settle for a point n the opening day as they took on AFC Wimbledon Ladies. A number of their talented U21s featuring in their starting line-up they found themselves trailing inside the opening quarter hour as new signing Helen Ogle fired Wimbledon into the lead with her first competitive goal for the club. Ipswich pressing hard for a reply before the break finding the back of the net to make it 1-1 with Abbie Lafayette scoring. Ipswich creating chances in the 2nd period as Wimbledon worked hard to keep them out to earn themselves a point.

Sunday 5th May

FAWNL Southern Premier Division

 The final day of the season across the whole of the FAWNL. Title and relegation places already decided going into the game n the Southern Premier Division the pressure off the top two as they met on the final day a late push from Cardiff City Ladies seeing them briefly threaten champions, Coventry United Ladies but getting the job done that threat was short-lived. A trip to Wales in their final fixture Coventry at Cardiff the sides sharing a goalless draw at half-time it was the hosts who drew first blood 2nd half Cardiff taking the lead. Coventry coming back to level the scores Bethan Merrick scoring her 7th goal of the season to see the points shared in a 1-1 draw.

The season not quite over for Coventry United Ladies as they take on Northern Premier Division Champions, Blackburn Rovers Ladies in the FAWNL Play off game. Taking place on Saturday 18th March at Bradford City FC’s, Valley Parade Stadium, kick-off 3pm.

 Chichester City Ladies were for a were top of the pile in the Southern Premier Division neck and neck with Coventry before falling away eventually overhauled by Cardiff strong run towards the end of the season to finish 3rd in the league. Ending with a trip to play Gillingham Ladies. Chichester’s, Laura Ingram adjudged to have committed a foul inside the box presenting Gillingham with the opportunity to score from the penalty spot the ball striking the post safely gathered, Chichester breaking and going on to open the scoring themselves, Ingram the player striking the ball on the volley to put the visitors 1-0 up. Gillingham fighting back to level the scores midway through the 2nd half the ball headed home from a corner by Farrand and into the final 15 minutes the hosts had the lead Gillingham going 2-1 up in the 77th minute Breon Grant with the goal. Chichester responding well getting it back to 2-2 in the 82nd minute with Kim Stenning putting a shot over the keeper to see the sides take home a share of the points.

  Oxford United Women assured a top 4 finish in the Southern Premier Division a solid first season back in the league after dropping down from FAWSL 2, now the Championship. A solid platform to build on for next season a trip to the midlands on Sunday for thier final game of the season taking on Loughborough Foxes Women who themselves promoted to the league this season have been strong in the top half of the table themselves more often than not this season just missing out with a 7th placed finish a draw on the final day. 0-0 going into the final 15 minutes top scorer Rebecca McGrother played into take the ball into the box and slot a shot wide of the keeper to score her 14th goal of the season, Oxford though getting straight up the other end to equalise, Emily Allen their top scorer played in to score her 19th goal of the season. The game finishing 1-1.

  5th and 6th meeting on the final day of the season with Watford Ladies hosting Plymouth Argyle Ladies. An early lead for the hosts Watford 1-0 up inside 10 minutes with Adekite Fatuga-Dada on the scoresheet to make it 1-0. Katie O’Leary coming off the bench in the 21st minute to replace Helen Ward scoring to make it 2-0 just 3 minutes later. 2-0 up at half-time the lead was further extended in the 56th minute with Alysha Stojko-Down scoring their 3rd goal. 3-0 and comfortable Plymouth though threatened a comeback Helen Bleazard pulling it back to 3-1 with 20 minutes left. Zoe Cunningham striking in the 82nd minute making it 3-2 setting up a nervous finish, Watford holding on for the win to finish 5th, whilst Plymouth promoted this season end with a top half finish.

  Milton Keynes Dons Ladies the other promoted side joining the league this season were at Newport Pagnell FC on the final day taking on C&K Basildon Ladies. The Essex side bottom of the league enduring a tough season playing thier last game under that name before a new beginning starts as AFC Basildon Ladies. Milton Keynes Dons retaining the Berks & Bucks County Cup beating Chesham United Ladies on Thursday night were looking to end on a high 0-0 in the first half they saved the goals until the final 15 minutes Leah Cudone one on one with the keeper putting them into the lead in the 75th minute. Into the final 5 minutes a corner won the ball cleared out to Louise Naylor to volley in their 2nd. Alice Hughes heading home from a free-kick to see the hosts 3-0 up with 2 minutes left time for a 4th goal Kim Farrow played through to score, the result seeing a place gained on the final day Milton Keynes up to 9th.

 A positive end to what has been another difficult season for QPR Women at the wrong end of the table, performances not always translated into points have been near the bottom all season. The 2nd bottom side at home to Portsmouth FC Women on the final day. Awarded a penalty in the 25th minute, Courtney Ward-Chambers stepping up to score it and put QPR into the lead. That the lead at half-time Portsmouth coming back to level the scores early in the 2nd half Alex Collighan making it 1-1. The game moving into the final 20 minutes QPR restored their lead top scorer Jo Wilson beating the offside trap to go on and put QPR 2-1 ahead, a battling finish seeing the 3 points won.

FAWNL South East Division One

Just passing through, Crawley Wasps Ladies have been the dominant force in FAWNL South East Division one the best side in the league following promotion haven’t looked back a long standing 100% record the one defeat as they were on the verge of clinching the title, a brief halt before becoming champions. A 1-1 draw away to Denham United Ladies in midweek a trip to play 5th placed Leyton Orient WFC in their final fixture. Darcey James putting the visitors into the lead in the 11th minute. Leyton Orient getting back on level terms just past the half hour with Lisa Holmback on target to make it 1-1. Crawley finding the winning goal with 15 minutes Naomi Cole scoring her 19th goal of the season to secure a 2-1 win.

Runners-up Billericay Town Ladies have also had a great first season playing in the FAWNL for the first time. The Essex side travelling to Norfolk on the final day to play Norwich City Ladies looking to avoid finishing 2nd bottom themselves with Denham closing the gap to just 2 points. Their home Plantation Park hosting the Norfolk Women’s Finals Day, Norwich’s final game of the season was at Fakenham Town’s Clipbush Park. Billericay having the best of the first half getting into a 2-0 lead. Millie Davies scoring to pull it back to 2-1 a late fightback from Norwich as striker Chelsea Garrett fired home an equalising goal then a 2nd to put Norwich into the lead. Sasha Diston heading in a 4th goal for Norwich to see them win 4-2 an secure their FAWNL status ending on a high!

 A fantastic season in FAWNL South East Division One for Enfield Town Ladies, a competitive tussle for 3rd spot they are the side to clinch it on the final day overtaking Actonians Ladies with a home win over rivals Denham United Ladies who were hoping for a positive result themselves to possibly catch Norwich City Ladies. Goalless between the sides at the break Enfield taking the lead on 57 minute with top scorer Molly Peters bringing up her 16th goal of the season to make it 1-0. A corner for Enfield in the 68th minute the ball cleared out of the box played back in Katherine Long onside turning to send the ball past the keeper sealing a 2-0 victory.

 Actonians Ladies slipping to 4th on the final day as they lost narrowly to AFC Wimbledon Ladies who have found their form late in the season taking 10 points from their final 4 matches to secure a top 6 finish. A 3rd straight win for Wimbledon coming away from home just the one goal in it with 2nd half substitute Becky Mclaren-Johnson scoring in the last 10 minutes for Wimbledon to seal the win. Actonians doing well after an indifferent start have grown and improved as the season has gone on and competed well in what has been a strong battle for position in the top half of the South East Division One table.

Cambridge United WFC were at home for their last game of the season and last at Mildenhall Town FC, the club serving well as their home in recent season’s off to St Neots next season.  Their opponents of the final day Ipswich Town Women, both hoping to capitalise on a results late on to push into the top half of the table. Cambridge in 7th taking the lead with Amy Howlett scoring to see the hosts leading 1-0 at half-time. Ipswich fighting back to level with 20 minutes left on the clock Zoe Cossey scoring from a header to make it 1-1. Cambridge restoring the lead moments later getting up the other end Mollie Coupar scoring her 13th goal of the season to make it 2-1. A chance to go further ahead ruled off by an offside flag. Ipswich coming back for a 2nd time to level the scores with 5 minutes left to play Natasha Thomas with her 12th goal of the season making it 2-2. Drama at the death with Ipswich striking to take the lead in the final minute Abbie Lafayette scoring on her senior debut. The 3-2 result seeing Ipswich leap frog Cambridge into 7th. One more game for Ipswich this Tuesday at Portman Road as they look to continue their dominance in the competition taking on Needham Market Women.

  Stevenage Ladies ending their season on a high with victory at home to bottom side Luton Town Ladies. Erin Pope heading them into the lead inside the opening minute. Amy Makewell doubling Stevenage’s advantage midway through the 1st half. A 2-0 lead at the break Stevenage going further ahead straight away in the 2nd period with Ellie Searle lobbing the keeper to make it 3-0.

Glorious weather for the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, Easter Sunday itself seeing a reduced fixture schedule across the region with just 23 games played across the leagues covered by Women’s Football East.

FAWNL Southern Premier Division

The weeks edition of the FAWNL begins with Cardiff City Ladies looking to return to 2nd spot in the Southern Premier Division at home to 5th placed Plymouth Argyle Ladies. Cerys Jones firing in a shot from distance setting Cardiff on the way putting them into the lead in the 12th minute. Kylie Nolan running into the box and sending a shot across the keeper doubling the lead on the half hour to see Cardiff leading 2-0 at half-time. An hour on the clock and Cardiff further extended their lead a high shot sent in from the left pulled down, Cori Williams closing in on the keeper challenging for the ball forcing it over the line to make it 3-0. Plymouth responding quickly to going 3-0 down pulling a goal back through Leah Burridge straight away. Natasha Knapman scoring another for the visitors to make it 3-2 and set up a nervous final 15 minutes Cardiff though holding onto their lead to claim the 3 points and return to 2nd in the league.

Defeat for Plymouth good news for 6th placed Watford Ladies as win away from home on Easter Sunday to move back to within a point with both with two to play including facing each other at Watford on the final day. This Sunday Warford were away to Gillingham Ladies. 0-0 between the sides at half-time a single goal enough to secure the 3 points for Watford coming midway through the 2nd half Adekite Fatuga-Dada putting in the cross for Katie O’Leary to nod it at the far post to score her 7th of the season.

FAWNL South East Division One

 Three games played in FAWNL South East Division One this weekend. Billericay Town Ladies 2nd in the league fresh from winning the Essex Women’s County Cup for the first time on Thursday evening beating holders C&K Basildon Ladies 4-0 were on the road on Sunday taking on bottom side Luton Town Ladies. It was the hosts however who opened the scoring with Remi Bains putting Luton 1 up from a corner kick. Billericay coming back to level the scores went on to take the lead headed into the break 3-1 up. A fourth goal coming 2nd half, Luton pulling it back to 4-2 with a worldie from Kimberly Newns her 1st goal for Luton. Billericay winning the game 4-2 putting them 12 points clear of the chasing pack, Sam Pittuck, Karissa Rodney, Karen Stephanou and Zoe Rushen with the goals.

Incredibly tight in the middle of the FAWNL South East Division One table as it has been all season. 3rd to 7th separated by just 4 points with most sides having 2 games left to play. AFC Wimbledon Ladies were playing their penultimate game of the season this Sunday their final home game too played at AFC Wimbledon’s Kingsmeadow Stadium. The visitors Enfield Town Ladies in 5th, Wimbledon in 7th 3 points behind at kick-off. Sian Wylie putting Wimbledon into a 5th minute lead with a strike from outside the box. Enfield coming back to level the scores on 17 minutes through Molly Peters capitalising on a defensive mix up. Peters striking again for her 2nd of the game with 35 minutes gone to see Enfield leading 2-1 at half-time. That the score until late into the game Wimbledon pushing for an equaliser getting it in the 82nd minute Rebecca Sargent heading in from a corner to make it 2-2. Late heartbreak for Enfield, joy for Wimbledon as they pushed players on into stoppage time up popped Rosie Russell to score the winner for Wimbledon her 1st senior goal lifting a shot over the keeper to win the game 3-2. Up to 6th level on points with Enfield.

A trip to Suffolk for league champions, Crawley Wasps Ladies this Easter Sunday. Ipswich providing a guard of honour before kick-off. Ipswich opening the scoring Zoe Cossey played in by Amy Nash to take the ball past the keeper and score with 16 minutes gone. Ipswich doing well keeping Crawley out at the other end to lead 1-0 at half-time. Crawley finding an equaliser on 64 minutes as Faye Rabson was played through to score. The visitors reduced to 10 soon after with Darcey James shown a 2nd  yellow card. Despite that it was Crawley who found the wining goal late in the game with 2nd half substitute Suzy Davies finding the back of the net in the 88th minute to win the game.

Sunday 14th April

Not one but two champions crowned this Sunday in the FAWNL, 3 in fact cause I’ll get wrong if I don’t mention Burnley FC Women who were also title winners at the weekend winning the Division One North title. Over to the FAWNL covered by Women’s Football East Coventry United Ladies and Crawley Wasps Ladies got the wins they needed to become champions of the Southern Premier Division and South East Division One respectfully.

FAWNL Southern Premier Division

Starting with the FAWNL Southern Premier Division, they have been amongst the title challengers for a number of season’s now and at last Coventry United Ladies are there top of the pile can’t be caught despite the late threat posed by Cardiff City Ladies racing up the table into 2nd spot. Just the one defeat in the league for Coventry a 10 point lead going into Sunday’s game at home to Cardiff with the reverse fixture to come as games in hand for the Welsh side, Coventry were in pole position knowing the win would secure the title. An early goal from Jade Brook scoring in the 7th minute putting Coventry into the lead. Cardiff levelling the scores 10 minutes later with Kylie Nolan finding the back of the net to make it 1-1. Coventry retaking the lead in 27th minute Amy Wathan heading home a Brook cross. A narrow advantage at the break so it remained for all of the 2nd half until Wathan struck again in injury time to giving Coventry some breathing room that dispelled a minute further into stoppage time with Marie Gauntlett scoring a wonder goal to see the game won 4-1 and the celebrations commence.

Many congratulations to Coventry United Ladies on their title success, FAWNL Southern Premier Division Champions.

  Defeat for Cardiff ending their own slim title hopes they slip back to 3rd with Chichester City Ladies winning at home on Sunday to return to 2nd. Were taking on Watford Ladies. A single goal enough to win Chichester the 3 points their 14th win of the campaign. The goal coming late in the 1st half with Lauren Cheshire scoring from the penalty spot.

   A lat winner saw 4th placed Oxford United Women clinch the 3 points at home to Portsmouth FC Women this Sunday in the Southern Premier Division. Goalless after the 1st 45 minutes Oxford going on to open the scoring early in the 2nd half, Georgia Timms fouled inside the box stepping up to score from the resulting penalty kick to make it 1-0. Katie James firing home from a free-kick giving the keeper no chance to make it 1-1 in the 56th minute. Into the closing minute the scores still locked at 1-1 a ball played into the box from wide met perfectly by Emily Allen to volley home inside the six yard box to make it 2-1 and win the game for Oxford with her 17th goal of the season.

   Less than 48 hours after winning the County Cup in Devon, Plymouth Argyle Ladies up in the Midlands to play Loughborough Foxes Women in the league. Plymouth looking to continue their recent good form unbeaten in their last four in the Southern Premier Division, back to back wins looking for a 3rd Natasha Knapman firing them into the lead on 30 minutes. Loughborough with a quick reply Rebecca Knight equalising 3 minutes later. Level at the break Helen Bleazard scoring a minute after the restart to put Plymouth back into the lead. Jessie Charlotte Cooper pulling it back to 3-2 for Loughborough with 12 minutes left to play Jones adding her 2nd of the match sealing the win for Plymouth in the final minute 4-2.

Finally in the Southern Premier Division this Sunday it was a contest between the bottom two with Queens Park Rangers Women hosting C&K Basildon Ladies. both still without a win in the league going into the match. C&K Basildon taking an early lead 1-0 up inside 2 minutes Holly Turner capitalising on a defensive error to score. QPR getting the equalising goal late in the 1st half with Jo Wilson rounding the keeper in the 37th minute to make it 1-1 at half-time. The hosts taking the lead early in the 2nd half a 2nd of the game for Wilson firing home a long range effort. Wilson going on to complete her hat-trick with less than 20 minutes to go. The final score 4-1 with Sue Kumaning getting her name on the scoresheet. Finally a win for QPR. Basildon relegated to South East Division One have endured a difficult season, the club knowing it would be a struggle coming together, the squad growing in adversity battling week in week out.

FAWNL South East Division One

One win needed too for Crawley Wasps Ladies in South East Division One to win successive promotions, champions and fully deserved have lead the way from start to finish a 100% winning record long held. Tipped for the title by everyone I spoke including fellow clubs in South East Division One brief visitors on their way to the Southern Premier Division. Billericay Town Ladies briefly putting the celebration on hold the Essex club in 2nd beating Crawly for the 1st time in the FAWNL, they were here again at home knowing victory would see them finish champions, were taking on Enfield Town Ladies who have enjoyed a strong season themselves and were holding Crawley to a goalless scoreline going into the final 10 minutes, the winning goal finally coming in the 83rd minute a great pass from Naomi Cole sending Kemina Webber through into the box to send the ball into the back of the net and win the game.

   Billericay Town Ladies finish runners-up in FAWNL South East Division One like Crawley making their FAWNL bow this season the Essex club recruiting well for life playing at a higher level neck and neck with Crawley early on. Kin Coster’s side were at home this Sunday taking on Cambridge United WFC in good form recently themselves. Drawing 1-1 at the half-time interval Billericay found the winning goal 2nd half to win the game 2-1 to secure the 3 points to guarantee 2nd spot. Danica Dougal and Zoe Rushen with the goals. Next up the Essex Women’s County Cup final this Thursday against C&K Basildon Ladies at Bowers & Pitsea FC.   A dramatic match between 3rd and 4th in the South East Division One table with Actonians Lades hosting Leyton Orient WFC. An early lead for the visiting side with Danielle Griffiths putting them 1-0 up in the 5th minute from the penalty spot. Actonians straight back into it Carla Williams with the goal to make it 1-1 a minute later. Actonians going on to take the lead in the 34th minute with Williams on target for her 2nd of the game. A late save from Paige Horsnell keeping it at 2-1 at half-time. Actonians striking the crossbar early in the 2nd period Leyton Orient coming back to make it 2-2 with 55 minutes played Valeria Moreno with the goal. 4 minutes later the visitors were in the lead Sophie Le Marchand scoring to make it 3-2. Just 3 minutes left on the clock and Actonians came back to level it a 3-3 to see the points shared, Alessandra Barreca netting for the 25th time this season.

   A fantastic start for Ipswich Town Women at home to Stevenage Ladies with Natasha Thomas scoring against the Hertfordshire side in the opening minute. Stevenage getting back into the game responding well coming back to level in the 21st minute Ellie Searle with the goal to make it 1-1. Level at the break the visitors were awarded a penalty within a minute of the restart, Erin Pope converting from the spot to make it 2-1. Ipswich found themselves down to 10 on the hour with Jordan Arnoup sent off. Despite that Ipswich pushed for a goal levelling the game with 5 minutes to go Lindsey Cooper scoring to rescue a point.

   Hope yet for Luton Town Ladies at the bottom of the league as they win for just the 3rd time this season to close the gap to 2nd bottom Denham United Ladies to 3 points with a game in hand and superior goal difference. At home this Sunday were taking on Norwich City Ladies. Goals from Rachel Kosky and Remi Bains seeing Luton holding a 2-0 lead at half-time. Norwich reducing the deficit with 20 minutes to play, Kathryn Stanley scoring from out wide. Luton defending held out to clinch the win and claim 3 vital points.

FAWNL Southern Premier Division 

  Into April the end of the season drawing rapidly to a close, those challenging for titles knowing what they have to do now. Coventry United Ladies top of the FAWNL Southern Premier Division suffering their 1st defeat of the season at home to Chichester City Ladies last Sunday bounced back in midweek to win at home against Oxford United Women. This Sunday were on home turf once again taking on 2nd bottom side Queens Park Rangers Women. A frustrating performance from the league leaders as they were held to a draw despite Nikki Miles putting them 1-0 heading in from a corner.

  Coventry leading at half-time Queens Park Rangers have had a difficult season, without a win on the board their 4 points all coming from draws, continue to work hard and battle fought back to earn a point with Kasha Petit scoring to make it 1-1 with a little over 20 minutes left. Coventry now 7 points clear of 2nd placed Cardiff City Ladies who have a game in hand. Coventry with a chance to open up a 10 point lead at the top if they win at home to Milton Keynes Dons Ladies in midweek, then it’s a huge game on Sunday at home again to Cardiff City Ladies a win would see Coventry crowned champions.

  A 10th league win of the season in their 100th FAWNL win games, it sees Plymouth Argyle Ladies back up into 5th spot in the Southern Premier Division. The 3 points coming at home on Sunday against Milton Keynes Dons Ladies. Natasha Knapman putting Plymouth 1-0 to the good inside 10 minutes. Milton Keynes responding straight away to level the scores Amy Gooderham’s half volley finding the back of the net. Plymouth regaining the lead just past the half hour Jessie Jones seeing her shot saved putting it in as the rebound fell straight to her. 2-1 to Plymouth at the half-time interval. The hosts securing the win with a 3rd goal in the 66th minute, Knapman heading home from a cross put in by substitute Helen Bleazard. 

   Portsmouth FC Women travelled to Kent this Sunday to play Gillingham Ladies. The sides creating few opportunities in the first half went in goalless at the break. The visitors breaking the deadlock early in the 2nd half Katie James scoring from a stunning free-kick, her shot from distance over the wall striking the post and in to make it 1-0 in the 52nd minute. The lead doubled with 15 minutes remaining players up for a free-kick the ball parried inside the box Eilidh Currie on hand to score from close range. Portsmouth winning 2-0.

FAWNL South East Division One

Thing’s didn’t turn out the way Crawley Wasps Ladies would have hoped for last Sunday as one more win was needed to clinch the FAWNL South East Division One title, playing 2nd placed Billericay Town Ladies, the Essex side spoiling the party winning the game 1-0. Not what they wanted but Crawley remain in a very strong position knowing two wins from their final 5 league matches would be enough to become league champions. Were at home against the only other side in the Division to take points off them this season Cambridge United WFC, that game ending 0-0 was the beginning of a good spell for the visitors as they climb into a strong position in the top half of the table. A better game from Crawley this time around the hosts taking the lead on 20 minutes Jenny Drury’s free-kick striking the bar Amy Green was on hand to nod in the rebound, the lead doubled late in the first half Darcey James heading in from a corner kick.

  Crawley 2-0 up at half-time extending their lead early in the 2nd half with Megan Stow making it 3-0 with her 16th goal of the season. Kemina Webber edging in front of Naomi Cole as top scorer getting Crawley’s 4th goal on the hour to give her 19 for the season. Mollie Coupar pulling a goal back for Cambridge with 20 minutes left, Crawley pushing for more goals restoring their 4 goal cushion with 12 minutes left Rachel Palmer striking from 15 yards. Stow from an acute angle scoring her 2nd of the match in injury time to see Crawley win the game 6-1. 1 win from 4 needed now.

   Top half positions in FAWNL South East Division One remain hotly contested. Actonians Ladies returning to 3rd spot winning away to bottom side Luton Town Ladies on Sunday. The hosts battling at the foot of the table are a drift and need every point now, held Actonians to a goalless draw first half. The visitors getting the 2nd half off to a fantastic start taking the lead in the opening minute top scorers Alessandra getting the goal to make it 1-0 her 24th strike of the season. Carla Williams adding a 2nd goal for Actonians 7 minutes later making it 2-0 with her 12th of the season. The points made secured midway through the 2nd half with substitute Jennifer Laidlaw scoring to make it 3-0.

   Actonians climbing above Leyton Orient WFC as they suffered defeat away from home to Enfield Town Ladies this Sunday. Molly Peters on target with the only goal of the 1st half putting Enfield into a 16th minute lead. Peters 12th goal of the season early in the 2nd half doubling Enfield’s advantage. Claire Ford getting amongst the goals making it 3-0 to the hosts midway through the 2nd half. Lily Bruno introduced to the action in the 74th minute scoring for Enfield in the 82nd minute to wrap up a 4-0 win that sees Enfield back up into 5th spot, all remains very tight in the top half with a handful of games left.

   Kevin Foster taking charge of his first game since being named as the new AFC Wimbledon Ladies manager, began with an away trip to Suffolk to play Ipswich Town Women. Chances for the visitors first half the sides drawing 0-0 at half-time. The deadlock broken 10 minutes into the 2nd period, Georgia Heasman floating a ball over the keeper to put Wimbledon into the lead. The visitors going on to double their advantage midway through the 2nd half with Sophie Manzi a 2nd half substitute scoring a fine solo effort to make it 2-0. The win putting Wimbledon back onto the tail of the top half sides.

FAWNL Southern Premier Division

We begin this weeks Round-Up with a defeat for the league leaders in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division, this Sunday saw Coventry United Ladies 15 game run come to an end as they lost at home for the first time this season in the league at home to 3rd placed Chichester City Ladies. Coventry getting off to a great start going in front inside the opening 10 minutes defender Nikki Miles heading home from a corner kick t make it 1-0. Chichester getting back on level terms in the 34th minute, Molly Clark fouled 30 yards out taking the resulting free-kick and scoring to make it 1-1. The visitors getting the lead in the final minute of the first half awarded another free-kick, Clark firing it into the back of the net. Chichester holding the advantage a good period of injury time to complete the 1st half.

  Into the 2nd half a close contest so far, Chichester clearing the ball off their goal line early in the 2nd period, the lead extended in the 64th minute from another Clark free-kick, this time Kim Stenning volleying home to make it 3-1. Coventry getting it back to 3-2 with 20 minutes left to play Amy Wathan scoring her 20th of the season, Chichester defending as Coventry pushed hard for a 3rd goal themselves didn’t come Chichester the side to end Coventry’s unbeaten record.

 That defeat for Coventry sees Cardiff City Ladies close the gap on the leaders to just 3 points as they won at home this Sunday. Taking on Kent side, Gillingham Ladies, Emma Jones scoring a brace for the Welsh side for the 2nd game in a row to clinch Cardiff the 3 points to extend their winning run t 9 matches in the Southern Premier Division. Jones fining the bottom corner to make it 1-0 midway through the 1st half the lead doubled deep into 1st half injury time. Cardiff defending their lead Gillingham exerting pressure unable to pull a goal back themselves. 3 points between Cardiff and Coventry who do have a match in hand the two sides have yet to meet in the league, 2 interesting games in prospect.

   Fourth placed Oxford United Women travelled to the South West on Sunday to take on Plymouth Argyle Ladies. The visitors falling behind from a hotly disputed corner a shot fired in goalkeeper Lucy Davies saving but in doing so falling and seeing the ball carried over the line. Midway through the 1st half Oxford were reduced to 10 with captain Lauren Haynes already shown a yellow given a 2nd for a late tackle. Despite this Oxford pressed Plymouth looking for an equalising goal the hosts keeping them at bay to collect the 3 points.

   Portsmouth FC Women were looking to build on their midweek victory at home to Chichester City Ladies this Sunday as they took on 5th placed Loughborough Foxes Women at home. The lead 2-0 to the hosts at the break, Portsmouth taking the lead via the penalty spot, Rachel Panting scoring after Shannon Albuery was brought down inside the area. Panting with a double scoring her 14th goal of the season in the 35th minute. No further goals added in the 2nd period a good response from Portsmouth having lost 3-0 at home to Cardiff last Sunday. 

  Late drama at the Stadium MK this Sunday with 3 goals scored in the final 6 minutes of the match. Milton Keynes Dons Ladies taking on Watford Ladies. The game goalless for the first 84 minutes, Watford captain Helen Ward put through on goal to put Watford 1-0 with her 18th strike of the season. Adekite Fatuga-Dada putting Watford 2-0 just 3 minutes later. The 3 points secured despite Milton Keynes getting it back to 2-1 in stoppage time with Alice Hughes on the scoresheet as they pressed Watford at the end.  

FAWNL South East Division One

In FAWNL South East Division One the champagne remains on ice for Crawley Wasps Ladies. Unbeaten in 32 league matches in a period over 2 years Crawley needed one more positive result at home to 2nd placed Billericay Town Ladies to clinch the title in the debut season in the FAWNL. Sunday’s home venue the Peoples Pension Stadium home of Crawley Town FC. Billericay too enjoying a great debut season in the FAWNL themselves, the Essex side getting their tactics spot on with goalkeeper Nikita Runnacles producing some top saves to keep Crawley out. Danica Dougal given the opportunity to fire Billericay into the lead sending the ball high past the keeper to win the game 1-0. Five games left for Crawley, two wins needed.

   A good weekend all round for the visiting sides in South East Division One with 4 wins and a draw in total. Actonians Ladies back up to 4th in the table scoring a last gaps winner to beat Enfield Town Ladies, in 4th going into the match. A close contest, Enfield taking an early lead in the match Katherine Long firing them in front inside 5 minutes. Actonians getting back on level terms on the half hour with top scorer Alessandra Barreca scoring her 22nd of the campaign. The game tied at 1-1 heading into 2nd half stoppage time Barreca found the back of the net for the 2nd time in the game to win it for Actonians at the death.

  Cambridge United WFC are up to their highest position of the season in FAWNL South East Division One, climbing up to 5th on Sunday as their recent good form continues, this time last month were as low as 10th in the table. County Cup success in that spell too were away to bottom side Luton Town Ladies. The pair often enjoying a competitive tussle the hosts taking an early lead a scramble in the box form a corner Nicola Henman making it 1-0 in the 2nd minute. Cambridge coming back to level in the 11th minute Mollie Coupar with a sweetly struck half-volley. The lead doubled with 10 minutes left in the first half Coupar with time to line up a shot firing in to make it 2-1. The youngster completing her hat-trick minutes later getting hold of the ball from a poorly struck goalkick and lobbing the ball in to celebrate her 10th goal of the season. Cambridge getting themselves into a 4-1 lead with Becky Sheppard firing in a fantastic strike for her 9th of the season in the 41st minute.

  The damage done Luton managing to pull a goal back with 12 minutes left Remi Bains making it 4-2, Cambridge on the up. Announcing this week they will be moving to St Neots Town FC form next season ending their time at Mildenhall Town FC, a club that has embraced women’s football since their arrival and I’d love to see something come off the back of their relationship with Cambridge United WFC.

   An away win too and a vital 3 points won for Denham United Ladies on Sunday the 2nd bottom side winning for just the 3rd time this season against Stevenage Ladies. Lauren Cox’s first half goal the difference between the sides, Denham goalkeeper Lizzie Rose making some important saves in the match too.

  AFC Wimbledon Ladies were moments away from completing an away win themselves against Norwich City Ladies only to concede a late goal to see the points shared. Hannah Baptiste firing Wimbledon into the lead on 32 minutes at Plantation Park, Norwich pressing late on getting it back to 1-1 with Ellen Swift scoring the goal making her 1st appearance of the season coming on with 15 minutes left. New signing Megan Todd also making her 1st appearance for her new club joining from Acle United Women.

FAWNL Southern Premier Division

  Coventry United Ladies move 6 points clear at the top of the FAWNL Southern Premier Division. A healthy lead with 7 games left to play, those chasing all having played more. Coventry winning their 14th straight league match undefeated having only dropped points on the opening day drawing 0-0 with Gillingham Ladies. 

Two goals for Coventry United Ladies, Marie Gauntlett

This Sunday they made the trip to King’s Langley FC to play Watford Ladies the weather a whole lot better than when the sides met in the FAWNL Cup back in October. Coventry winning 3-2 then got off to a fantastic start this Sunday with striker Marie Gauntlett charging down the goalkeeper gaining possession and sending the ball on into the net to put the visitors 1-0 up after just 5 minutes. Watford coming close to levelling the scores with a long range strike from Adekite Fatuga-Dada cannoning off the crossbar.

The lead doubled from a corner doubled from a corner kick the ball put into the area cleared only to Natasha Merritt the midfielder controlling before sending a looping ball in to drop down over the keeper to make it 2-0. That the lead heading into the final 25 minutes chances for Coventry to extend their lead Amy Wathan finding the side netting, Helen Ward for Watford seeing a shot saved by Susan Wood as the hosts pushed for a reply, the win made secure late on with Gauntlett heading home from a corner kick to score her 11th of the season and see the game won 3-0.

Cardiff City Ladies climb up to 2nd in the FAWNL Southern Premier Division. Closed the gap to 2nd placed Chichester City Ladies with an 8th straight league win last Sunday and with Chichester not in action this Sunday had the chance to overhaul them with a trip to the South Coast to play Portsmouth FC Women. A slow opening to the game Portsmouth denied the opening goal in the 19th minute with Shannon Albuery’s ruled out for offside. Moments later Cardiff went on to take the lead Grace Horrell heading in from a corner kick. The lead doubled 4 minutes later with Emma Jones capitalising on a mix-up at the back to score. A purple patch for Cardiff doing the damage as Jones scored her 2nd of the game to make it 3-0 just 3 minutes later. The 2nd half ending goalless Cardiff returning home with the 3 points.

A huge win for 4th placed Oxford United Women at home as they put bottom side C&K Basildon Ladies to the sword on Sunday. Two players celebrating hat-tricks for Oxford, Georgia Timms one of those opening the scoring in the 6th minute. Emily Allen the other starting off a goals blitz midway through the first half doubling the lead in the 21st minute, Timms striking again minutes later with Allen netting her 2nd 3 minutes later, A further 2 goals added in the closing minutes of the first half with Florence Fyfe scoring Oxford’s 5th and Allen completing a first half hat-trick. That scoreline repeated in the 2nd half with Allen making it 7-0 on the hour, Fyfe scoring her 2nd of the game to make it 8-0 minutes later. Allen going on to score her 2nd hat-trick of the day to move clear as top scorer on 16. Timms scoring her 3rd in the closing minutes too. With Imogen Lancaster amongst the goals to with her 1st of the season in a 12-0 win. Oxford just 3 points back from 2nd placed Cardiff.

Kent side Gillingham Ladies made the trip down to the South West this Sunday to play 7th placed Plymouth Argyle Ladies. Zoe Cunningham scoring for the hosts in the 20th minute. The points shared with Gillingham making it 1-1 with Millie Waud getting the goal.

Milton Keynes Dons Ladies were at home this Sunday at the MK Stadium taking on QPR Women. Leah Cudone combining with Kim Farrow in attack to put Milton Keynes 1-0 up inside 10 minutes. Lauren Jordinson equalising for the 2nd bottom side midway through the first half with a curling strike from the edge of the box. 1-1 at half-time, it was the visitors who went on to take the lead early in the 2nd half with a stunning strike from Sue Kumaning. QPR 2-1 up with the game heading into the final 15 minutes Milton Keynes came back to level it at 2-2 Kerry Newman picking up the ball in midfield and scoring from 30 yards out. Minutes later Milton Keynes were in front Kim Farrow on target for what prove to be the winning goal.

FAWNL South East Division One

Crawley Wasps Ladies are almost there. Maintaining their 10 point lead at the top of FAWNL South East Division One with victory away to bottom side Luton Town Ladies are almost over the line, a win in their next game at home to 2nd placed Billericay Town Ladies will see the title won. Both promoted to the league this season. Crawley are unbeaten with just 2 points dropped to date. An early goal from Amy Green seeing them take the lead against Luton on Sunday. Naomi Cole with a volley making it 2-0 in the 16th minute taking her to 18 goals for the season, joint top scorer with Kemina Webber. Rachel Palmer adding a 3rd goal late in the first half scoring from the edge of the box. 3-0 up at half-time, Luton kept Crawley from adding further goals in the 2nd half. This coming potential title winning clash with Billericay Town Ladies being played at The Peoples Pension Stadium home of Crawley Town FC. 

  Billericay Town Ladies have also enjoyed a strong first season following promotion to the FAWNL, Crawley runaway leaders, the Essex side neck and neck with them early on are in a strong position to finish runners-up. 5 points clear of the chasing pack with games in hand 3rd placed Leyton Orient WFC. A trip to play Cambridge United WFC this Sunday. The hosts having won back the Cambridgeshire Women’s Invitation Cup on Tuesday success coming on the back of a great spell that had seen 7 points won in 8 days to move them up into the top half. A busy spell Billericay ending that run with a goal in each half to seal a 2-0 win to return home with 3 points. Danica Dougal scoring at the back post in the 42nd minute off a free-kick to put Billericay into the lead. Zoe Rushen running clear to head the ball home from another free-kick on halfway to secure win in the 2nd period.

   Leyton Orient WFC were playing this Sunday’s league match at Leyton Orient FC’s Breyer Group Stadium. Up to 3rd in South East Division One were looking to go further clear of the sides below as they took on Norwich City Ladies. The opening goal coming midway through the first half the hosts getting in front through an own goal as Sophie Le Marchand played the ball into the area. A 2nd goal coming 4 minutes later Sualia Cardoso Queni finding the back of the net. Leyton Orient going into the half-time interval 3-0 up with Hayley Barton scoring a terrific goal inside the area. The hosts advantage further strengthened early in the 2nd half with Barton scoring her 2nd of the game in the 46th minute to make it 4-0. Norwich pulling a goal back in the final 15 minutes with Chelsea Garrett scoring. Leyton Orient winning 4-1 a 5 point gap now to 4th and 5th placed Enfield Town Ladies and Actonians Ladies who happen to be their next two league opponents big games in the battle for final position.

  A first league win of 2019 for Ipswich Town Women as the Suffolk side clinched the 3 points away from home on Sunday in a battling encounter with 2nd bottom Denham United Ladies. The 8th placed side taking an early lead in the game going ahead after just 12 seconds! Natasha Thomas catching the Denham defence in possession and firing the ball into the back of the net. Toni-Ann Wayne seeing an effort ruled out for offside with quarter of an hour gone, Denham getting back to 1-1 in the 25th minute Kayleigh Currivan getting the goal. Ipswich restoring their lead late in the first half with Wayne making it 2-1. Denham battled in search of a reply Ipswich defending held on the win secured in the final 2 minutes with Thomas forcing her way through to score her 2nd of the game to win it 3-1. Ipswich closing the gap to the midfield pack. Congratulations too for Sian Fagg who made her 100th appearance for Ipswich at the weekend. An outfield player that has been doing a great job in goal over the past 2 seasons.

  Stevenage Ladies also winning away from home on Sunday to move themselves 8 points clear of 2nd bottom Denham and onto the tail of the midfield pack above. Were taking on AFC Wimbledon Ladies. A screamer from outside the box from Ashleigh Deacon firing Stevenage into a 1-0 lead at half-time. Wimbledon with a chance to level the scores awarded a penalty in the 50th minute, Stevenage’s Gemma Biggadike making the save. The lead doubled on 57 minutes Stevenage awarded a free-kick outside the box Shona Chitate with a great strike over the wall to double the lead. Wimbledon getting it back to 2-1 with 25 minutes left to play Caroline Bisson on target, Stevenage defending holding out to get the 3 points.
