Cup Final Report – Hutton Ladies v Silver End United Ladies

Essex Women’s Trophy Final

Sunday 8th April

 Saffron Walden Town FC the venue for today’s football action on Women’s Football East, another Cup Final this season’s Essex Women’s Trophy Final to be contested between Hutton Ladies and Silver End United Ladies. 

  A new format for the competition this season with the sides knocked out of the earlier rounds off the County Cup going on to contest for the Trophy. Today’s final between two sides that play there football in the Eastern Region Women’s Football League (ERWFL) Division One. The pair haven’t met in league action as geography see’s Silver End United Ladies play in the North section with Hutton Ladies in the South.

  For a 2nd successive season Hutton Ladies reach a cup final, having reached the ERWFL Plate Final last season beating Colney Heath Ladies to life the trophy. Reaching the Essex Women’s Trophy Final this time around are still in with a good chance of defending the ERWFL Plate too having reached the last four, that semi-final scheduled for next weekend at home to Histon Ladies. Struggled for numbers at the beginning of the season which eventually led to their Reserve side folding earlier in the season. Currently 4th in the league are like many sides in the region, have several games left to play following one of the wettest winters in recent season’s aswell as their run in the cups.

 Silver End United Ladies are one of the few sides who have played out there fixtures ending their league campaign last weekend today’s final is their last match competitive match of the season. Have had a difficult campaign in the league finishing bottom of the league having struggled for numbers and injuries at the start of the season. Danielle Warnes taking on the role of player-manager at the start of the season. Rebuilding and recruitment during the season recent form has improved and to reach the final of a competition at the end of their season is a fantastic achievement.

Road to the Final

  Both sides entering the Trophy in the first round were both up against young sides riding high in their 1st season’s in women’s football amongst the title chasers in Essex Women’s Division One. Hutton Ladies were away to Leigh Ramblers Ladies coming out on top in a close match winning 3-2 to reach the quarter finals. Silver End United Ladies were at home to Southend United Ladies a 2-0 victory seeing them into the last 8.

   Hutton Ladies were away in the quarter finals taking on Essex Women’s Premier Division side Collier Row Tigers a 2-1 win seeing them book their place in the last 4. Silver End United Ladies were handed an away win against Hutton Ladies Reserves side who have since folded. Hutton Ladies had a home draw in the semi-finals up against Essex Women’s Division One side Rayleigh Town Ladies another new name this season. A free scoring side, Hutton proved to strong the higher league placed side comfortably into the final with a 6-1 win. A closer looking game in paper for Silver End United Ladies in the semi-finals at home to the current holders of the play Essex Premier Division side, Frontiers Ladies. Silver End United Ladies started the better and leading 2-0 at half-time held off a Frontiers come back in the 2nd half to win the match 2-1 the reach the Trophy final.

  The venue for today’s game Saffron Walden Town FC a small stadium in the heart of the town, car parking available beside the ground. two small seated stands either side of the pitch. A large bar and clubhouse with rejoining kitchen serving hot food and drinks. Sadly the weather wasn’t playing ball this Sunday as again like so many others recently the day was overcast with heavy rain falling before the game. It rained all the way down from Norfolk so I wouldn’t have been surprised if the game was in doubt when I got there, but despite being muddy the pitch drains well and was okay for the final.

  The rain still falling as the teams walk out onto the pitch the presentations taking place it’s Silver End wearing light blue shirts with navy shorts and socks to kick-off the 1st half with Hutton lined up opposite in an all red kit with white across their shirt shoulders.Conditions are going to be slippery under foot with the amount of rain that has fallen the ground having already seen one final played today. Hutton win the ball early play it long out to Lucy Critchell breaking down the left wing, Silver End captain Roxanne Gardner at right back sliding in to make the challenge put the ball out for a throw.

   Kristi McLeavey winning the ball for Hutton looks to play Kate Lowen in ahead of her on the right taking the ball on down the line slips as she attempts to turn inside giving Emily Bambrick the opportunity to tackle and put the ball out for a throw deep on the right. McLeavey throws it long towards the edge of the Silver End area, Lindsey Cowell getting her head on the ball to clear for Silver End, they counter attack getting the ball up to their attackers, Megan Jiggins bringing the ball down passes it to Georgia Bryan to her left looking for the return pass put into her path as she looks to get in between the Hutton centre backs, Hannah Page, Hutton’s captain intercepts the pass.

   A free kick awarded wide on the right for Silver End a chance to put the ball into the area  a good delivery into the six yard box Hutton goalkeeper Krissie Glover does well under with a Silver End player closing her down to punch the ball away, the play halted the challenge deemed unfair against the goalkeeper, Glover takes the free-kick. McLeavey with another long throw in deep inside the Hutton half in the right the ball knocked on across the top of the area Lowen knocks it over the top with Laura Allen breaking in behind, the ball dropping wide of goal before she can get a telling touch. 

  Hutton have started the game the better pushing players forwards turning play around quickly no one is afforded any time on the ball the pass forwards Allen giving chase Danielle Warnes sliding in to win the ball. Silver End attack up the right Juliana Marques with the ball squared inside players clustering round the top of the area Jiggins with the strike in towards goal, Glover right behind it makes the comfortable save. 

  Silver End capitalise as a kick out of the area from Glover is intercepted on the right side the ball moved quickly into the middle Jiggins turning and sliding the ball on for Rebecca Donnelly 25 yards out the goal open hits the ball 1st time Glover scrambling to get back across arrives just in time to see the ball bounce wide of the post. A busy opening quarter hour play rushed as both sides move the ball on quickly, Silver End are on the attack, the ball won back by Keeley Walker in her own half the midfielder carries the ball forwards Allen making a good run ahead of her peeling away to the right receives the ball shooting from just outside the area her shot angling in towards goal is straight at Hannah Streetley the goalkeeper making the save. Gardner defends well up against Allen in the next Hutton attack as Walker looks to set her up moving left this time.

   Silver End break forwards players drifting into the middle, Donnelly is in space on the left the ball played forwards she gives chase towards the box, Glover comes rushing out to meet her sliding in to save at the attackers feet, the ball not gathered runs on behind Glover, Donnelly keeping her feet tries to get there McLeavey back on the cover shielding the ball as Glover gets back to smother the ball. Kaitlin Sugg with good hold up play moving towards the right for Hutton get the ball forwards for Allen running in behind, a cry of frustration as she sends her cross behind the Silver End goal.

Hutton Ladies, Rianne Dimmock

Up the other end Rianne Dimmock comes across from the middle of defence to put the ball out for a throw as Donnelly is looking to get in behind for Silver End on the left. Warns puts in the block as Lowen and Allen attempt the one two getting forwards down the right channel for Hutton. Streetley with a good save to deny Allen as Hutton push on down the left the diagonal ball missed by the Silver End defence running onto Allen clear into the box pulls the trigger looking to put the shot back across the keeper Streetley getting a glove on the ball to deflect it away.

  Hutton look lively breaking forwards through the middle Walker on for Lowen takes a run at the Silver End defence, Bambrick blocking her shot the rebound coming out to Amy Crumpler she attempts the slide the through ball on for Allen, a little too much on the ball Streetley can get out of her goal to gather at the top of her area. 

GOAL! Approaching the half hour mark the dead lock is broken as Hutton score the opening goal of the final, pressing forwards through the middle Sugg on the ball riding a tackle from Jiggins as appeals are made for the free-kick Sugg finds herself with time and space on the ball 35 yards out takes on the shot her lobbed effort flying over Streetley to land in the back of the net 1-0.

Crumpler bringing the ball on through the middle after breaking up at Silver End attack looks to exploit a high defensive line a defensive slip seeing Allen run in behind the flag up against Hutton as Lowen is caught offside. Both sides make a change, Toni Brown coming on for Bambrick for Silver End, Hayley Critchell on for Lucy Critchell for Hutton. Stephanie A’Len bringing the ball on for Silver End through the middle support to her right with Marques the ball dinked over the top of the Hutton defence deflected wide brings the 1st corner of the match. Played in from the right a good delivery an equally good claim from Glover jumping at her near post. 

A’Len getting on with the ball at her feet again through the middle has Donnelly breaking clear on the left wing taking the ball on up the line squares a cross in towards the near post Jiggins closing in as Glover goes down to save the ball put wide looks to come off the keeper but a goal kick is awarded. Into the closing minutes of the 1st half a throw deep on the right for Silver End the ball played into the area Bryan holding in the ball up right of the goal attempts to lay it back for the advancing runner, Hutton defend the ball deflected wide across the six yard box Jiggins retrieves left side swings a low cross back into the six yard box, Glover down low lays claim to the ball. 

  Last attack of the half as Hutton break the ball rolled on for Lowen to take on jinking left then right takes on the Silver End defence moving right gets a shot away from inside the box, Streetley is a tall goalkeeper plucks the ball down safely at her near post.

  That 1st half passed very quickly the ball wasn’t still for a second both sides eager to get forwards, play broken up in midfield space is available if the pass can find the runner. Both goalkeepers producing saves. A single goal the difference between the sides a narrow advantage for Hutton a well taken goal by Sugg to put them ahead. Silver End far from out of the game plenty to look forwards to in the 2nd half.

A change for both sides at half-time. Both in attack, Patrizia Leo is on for Hutton in place of Lowen. Angela Holden is on for Silver End in place of Bryan. Hutton to get the 2nd half underway. Silver End win the ball and counter the pass long out to Donnelly on the left wins a corner kick. Players forwards as the delivery comes in from the left knocked on across the face of goal falls to Holden from close range her shot is blocked deflected behind for a corner on the right. A good ball in low across the top of the six yard box, no one challenging Glover as she drops forwards onto the ball.

  Bragg with a excellent tackle to get hold of the ball for Silver End in the centre on for A’Len she runs with the ball before looking to slide Jiggins in on goal Sugg tracking back is able to shield the ball back to her goalkeeper. A free-kick on halfway for Hutton players up to the top of the area as Crumpler plays it forwards the headed clearance coming back to her as she advances takes a shot fro distance her effort blocked Sugg trying to get on the end of the rebound Silver End launch the ball up field. 

  Crumpler plays the ball on for Critchell getting clear on the left closing in on the byline sends a low cross in towards the six yard box Streetley gets to it first. A’Len with the ball on for Jiggins she is tackled by Walker, the game becoming a little stretched, Silver End knowing they are not out of it sense they can pull the scores level Hutton know they need another goal. Critchell sees another cross in from the left race across the Silver End six yard box. Walker does enough to stop A’Len as the Silver End midfielder looks to press on with the ball. The ball not cleared the diagonal ball is fired in towards the far post Marques closing in, Glover gets out ahead of her to take the ball.

 Leo on the attack right side fires and early ball into the area a difficult ball for Streetley to deal with gets a glancing touch on the ball in the middle of her six yard box to knock the ball on to the left side Critchell after it regains possession hitting a shot in on the turn, Streetley has her near post covered by then is well placed to make the save. Silver End launch a rapid counter the ball on through the middle Bragg on for Jiggins on the move takes on the early shot outside the area Glover behind it all the way safely gathers. 

Straight up the other end the ball played out to Critchell on the left side knocks the ball inside 25 yards out sends a shot in towards goal the rising ball heading for the top corner Streetley makes the save knocking the ball down and away for the corner. The corner delivered low in towards the near post is cleared. Silver End make another change Marques the player coming off on comes Jennifer Stanhope. Silver End are pushing fro the equaliser with 20 minutes of the game left Leo attacking with the ball right side turns in field is tackled by Brown on the edge of the box. Hutton make another change the Critchell’s switching places once again Lucy back on for Hayley. 

 GOAL! Crumpler has the ball at her feet running towards the Silver End goal his fouled by Bragg in a dangerous position 25 yards out central to goal. It’s Crumpler to take the set-piece strikes it superbly the ball curled over the wall finding the top right hand corner of the goal to double Hutton’s lead with less than a quarter of an hour to play 2-0.

Crumpler involved in the build up once more as Hutton push on taking the ball on through the middle lays the pass out to Leo on the right her early diagonal ball low into the box evades Streetley the ball heading for the goal beyond the Silver End defence back tracking the ball is cleared off the line by Warnes. A throw high on the left for Hutton into Critchell plays the pass from the top of the area 25 yards out on for Allen she takes the ball on shapes too shoot her standing foot going out from under her as she doe so the ball running wide of the far post as a result. A free-kick for Silver End as Gardner is fouled inside her own half almost all go forwards towards the Hutton penalty area. Hutton make a change Crumpler coming off, Lucy Blurton comes on.

 GOAL! Closing in on the final 5 minutes of the match and Silver End set up a tense finish to the final as they pull a goal back. The ball played up towards the top left corner of the area Hutton don’t get it clear as Silver End pressure the ball the cross is fired into the middle of the area, A’Len meeting it sends the ball past the keeper into the back of the goal to make it 2-1.

  Jiggins plays the ball on for Donnelly looking to come inside to attack the box from the left Dimmock gets there first to clear the ball over her own crossbar for the corner. Allen finds space on the left as the ball is won in midfield by Walker. Shoots from 25 yards out her low ball in gathered by Streetley. Silver End make another substitution Bragg the player coming off, Lisa Nepean on. Nicola Walker gets forwards on the left in support of Allen the attacker getting the ball into her the full back squares a cross into the area intercepted by Warnes. Allen chases the ball into the corner eating up valuable seconds.

  Silver End bring off Gardner late on sending Laura Borein on a straight swap at right back. Donnelly sends a shot over the Hutton cross bar after the referee plays the advantage as she runs onto the ball after Jiggins is fouled in the middle. The last chance of the match as the final whistle blows and Hutton Ladies celebrate winning the Essex Women’s Trophy.

  Despite the horrible conditions an entertaining final played at a furious pace both sides never finding any time on the ball. Hutton leading 1-0 at half time were in need of a 2nd goal as Silver End pushed for a reply in the 2nd half, Amy Crumpler’s superb free-kick doubling the advantage. Silver End never gave up though and pulling it back to 2-1 made Hutton work for the result. 

Women’s Football East – Player of the Match

   Sometimes it can be an easy decision… but more often then not it’s a tough one picked a Women’s Football East – Player of the Match. A committed battle in the centre of the park play broken up by both sides, plenty of good forwards movement too. One player slightly ahead of the rest and consistent throughout was Hutton’s Amy Crumpler and add on to that her excellent free-kick the make it 2-0 she wins today’s Player of the Match award.

  Plenty more games left to squeeze in before the end of the season and possibly some dry ones too. Enjoyed the final despite the weather my thanks to the Essex FA and both the clubs for their assistance today. 

The Round-Up – 01/04/18

The Round-Up

Sunday 1st April

Once again it’s another shortened edition of The Round-Up with just the 12 games to report upon this weekend. Easter weekend was a much reduced fixture schedule anyway but with sides still needing to get a fair amount of games in another bout of wet weather wasn’t welcome as April begins. Half the fixtures suffering the next few weeks are going to be busy indeed.

  Some bad news to bring you all at the start of this week’s Round-Up with the sad news that another 2 sides have withdrawn from their respective leagues, an unprecedented number this season already. Another side withdrawing from the ERWFL, Premier Division side Writtle Ladies. The news has been out there for a bit but only recently confirmed, the Essex side reaching the County Cup Final 3 season’s ago had enjoyed a rapid rise through the leagues in their short history, many of their players representing the county too. No doubt a very talented squad of players but had struggled to field a side in recent weeks. The news a bit of a shock because the side you felt had further to go but it has come to an end, will no doubt see their players feature for various sides come the new season and all will be an asset where ever they go wish everyone involved with the club all the best for the future. 

  Also withdrawing from their league are Essex Division One side, Waltham Forest Ladies. Again another side that has struggled for numbers all season getting behind with there fixtures and made every effort to try and find new faces for their squad. Hopefully they will feature again in the Essex county leagues soon and again wish everyone involved with the club all the best for the future. 

  There is some good news on the horizon I am aware of at least 3 new sides that are looking to start up next season and hopefully more new sides will be appearing too.

FAWPL Southern Division

On to the football, there was one match played in the FAWPL Southern Division on Sunday with Portsmouth FC Ladies hosting Swindon Town Ladies at Bognor Regis Town FC. The fifth placed side beating the side bottom of the Southern Division 5-0 to move to within a point of 4th placed Lewes FC Women. Shannon Albuery putting Portsmouth into the lead 22 minutes into the 1st half added a 2nd goal 5 minutes later with Samantha Quayle also on target with a goal 6 minutes before the break to see Portsmouth into a comfortable 3-0 half-time lead. Swindon Town remain without a point in the league with 3 matches left to play battled hard in the 2nd half to keep the scoreline down Portsmouth getting 2 more goal in the closing minutes Albuery completing her hat-trick. Katie James making it 5-0 in stoppage time.

FAWPL South East Division One

One match also in FAWPL South East Division One. Ipswich Town Ladies hosting Enfield Town Ladies the away side having several 1st team players unavailable with the match being arranged at short notice travelled with a good portion of their Reserve side. Ipswich Town taking the lead in the 19th minute, Sophie Welton quickest to the rebound after Natasha Thomas’ shot was saved to turn the ball into the back of the net. Their lead didn’t last long however and Enfield Town got themselves back on level terms a few minutes later Katherine Long with the goal. Long was on target again with 6 minutes of the 1st half left to put Enfield Town into a 2-1 lead. Ipswich’s turn to hit back with a quick reply were awarded a penalty up the other end, captain Amanda Crump tucking the ball away for 2-2.

  All square at half-time Ipswich Town were back in front 5 minutes into the 2nd half defender Lindsey Cooper heading the ball home from a Crump corner. This time there was no quick reply Ipswich Town having the opportunity to go further ahead with 20 minutes left awarded a 2nd spot kick. Crump again delivering to make it 4-2. Gemma Moore scoring in the final minute for Ipswich Town to see them win the match 5-2 the 3 points lifting them back up to 2nd place in the South East Division One table.

ERWFL Premier Division

One match in the ERWFL Premier Division this weekend the table adjusted once more following Writtle’s withdrawal. League leaders Billericay Town Ladies travelling to bottom side Colney Heath Ladies on Sunday. The home side haven’t had the best of luck with injuries this season and were missing a few again but put on a valiant display nevertheless, Nicola Hollicks scoring the only goal of the 1st half to see Colney Heath leading 1-0. Summer Muir doubling the home sides lead early in the 2nd half. Billericay Town pulling it back to 2-1, managed to salvage a point with just 2 minutes left on the clock scoring to make it 2-2. Hayley Piggott and captain Lindsey Morgan with their goals. The point see’s Billericay Town leading the way by 8 points from 2nd placed Cambridge City Ladies with 2 matches to play. Cambridge City have 4 left maximum points will leave them on 35 points. 4th placed Acle United Ladies have 6 left to play however and should they and Billericay Town both claim maximum points in the run in they will both finish on 37 points going all the way once again.

ERWFL Division One North 

In the ERWFL Division One North their was the one game played at the weekend, Histon Ladies at home to Silver End United Ladies the away side playing their last league fixture of the season a tough campaign a bottom place finish settled a while back. Lack of numbers earlier on in the season and injuries contributing. A goal in the opening fifteen minutes by Abigail Davies putting Histon into a 1-0 half-time lead. A strong finish in the 2nd half seeing Histon go on to secure all 3 points, Sophie Lanham scoring from the penalty spot with fifteen minutes left. A goal each for Hannah Gordon and Katie Webb in the final 10 minutes seeing Histon Ladies win the game 4-0 and move up into 3rd position in the table with a game in hand on 4th placed Cambridge United WFC Reserves. Silver End United Ladies season isn’t done quite yet have a Cup Final to play this coming Sunday are taking on Hutton Ladies for the Essex Women’s Trophy at Saffron Walden FC a 3pm kick-off.

ERWFL Division One South

One match in ERWFL Division One South too this Sunday with runners-up spot clinching promotion for whoever can claim it. Far from settled yet though Harlow Town Ladies are in possession at the moment 3 points clear of 3rd placed Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies who saw their match away to leaders Stevenage Ladies Reserves called off due to the weather. Harlow Town Ladies were at home taking on Hutton Ladies in 4th spot. The point’s were shared with the sides finishing at 2-2. Chloe Bassett and Lily Bruno scoring for Harlow Town. Kaitlin Sugg and Amy Crumpler on target for Hutton. 

Norfolk Women’s Division One

Two matches in Norfolk Women’s Division One. Unbeaten Thorpe United Ladies move into 2nd spot in the table after claiming all 3 points away from home against Stalham Town Ladies this Sunday. Shanice Sutton moving past 30 goals for the season as she rattled home another hat-trick for Thorpe United. Lisa Ferdani also scoring in their 5-2 win.

   5-2 was also the winning score for Wymondham Town Ladies Reserves at home to Fakenham Town Ladies on Sunday. The sides were level at the break drawing 2-2, before Wymondham Town ran out 5-2 winners in the 2nd half, Gemma Hamilton-Rout with a penalty amongst Wymondham Town’s goalscorers. Rochelle Woods and Natalie Wright with the 1st half goals for Fakenham Town.

Norfolk Women’s Division Two

10 win out of 10 for FC Sprowston Ladies at the top of Norfolk Women’s Division Two as they recorded another comfortable win on the road away to Kirkley & Pakefield FC Ladies in the only game in the league on Sunday. Katie Fray scoring a hat-trick in the match. There were goal too for Melissa Belsey, Charlie Head and Rebecca Kirby in a 6-0 victory.

Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership

A six point haul in a double header in the Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership saw new leaders in the table as St Ives Town Ladies moved above Netherton United Ladies on goal difference. This Sunday they were away to fellow title hopefuls, 3rd placed Newmarket Town Ladies in the only game in the Cambridgeshire leagues. Always a competitive tussle between the sides the pair were drawing goalless at the break. The win secured in the 2nd half Hannah Seymour-Shove and Katie Stancombe scoring for St Ives Town to see the away side win 2-0 and move into a 3 point lead at the top of the table. A 7 point gap between them and Newmarket Town now both have 3 to play.

Essex Women’s Premier Division

The weather played havoc with the fixture list in Essex once again with just 3 games surviving all featuring Chelmsford City Ladies, and it was bed news in all 3 as the point went the way of their opponents. In the Essex Women’s Premier Division, Chelmsford City Ladies 1st team were at home to Beacon Hill Rovers Ladies. Goals from captain Gaby Freedman and Georgia James for Chelmsford in the 1st half they found themselves trailing 2-3 thanks to a Jo Smeaton hat-trick for Beacon Hill Rovers. Smeaton adding a 4th goal in the 2nd half to secure the 3 points now has 21 goals for 12 appearances for Beacon Hill Rovers this season.

Essex Women’s Division One

A double header in Essex Division One, featuring Chelmsford City Ladies Reserves taking on high flyers Leigh Ramblers Ladies 4th in the table going into the match 3 points behind leaders Southend United Ladies. All very tight at the top. Leigh Ramblers are scoring plenty of goals only 2nd to Hullbridge Sports Ladies in the goal scoring charts before Sunday, their young squad up against the side bottom of the league this weekend scored another 15 goals in the 2 matches to claim all 6 points and take a 3 point lead at the top of the Division One table. A brace each for Abbi Brown and Amber Denton in the 1st match along with a goal each for Chloe Gilligan, Sasha Vail and Paige White seeing Leigh Ramblers win the match 7-0. Denton getting 5 more goals to her name in the 2nd game Leigh Ramblers winning 8-0. Their other goals scored by Rebecca Dalgarno, Molly Giles and Jordan Castle.

Brentwood Town Ladies v C&K Basildon Ladies

 Aveley FC the venue this evening for the final of the BBC Essex Women’s County Cup between Brentwood Town Ladies and the current holders C&K Basildon Ladies.

 Winners of the Essex Women’s County Cup for the past 3 successive season’s 4 wins over all C&K Basildon Ladies are aiming for a record equalling 5th win in the competition formed back the 1994/95 season. C&K Basildon’s opponents for this evening’s final are Brentwood Town Ladies from the ERWFL Premier Division making their 1st ever County Cup Final appearance.

   Last season fellow ERWFL Premier Division side, Billericay Town Ladies took C&K Basildon Ladies all the way to extra-time before the FAWPL Southern Division side went on to win their 3rd County Cup in a row. The will be an incentive to Brentwood Town Ladies as they face a tough test against a side in good form playing 2 leagues higher. Currently 6th in the ERWFL Premier Division, Brentwood Town Ladies form has varied this season a poor run earlier in the season seeing them slip down the standings. A change in the management team saw Paul Prosser taking over at 1st team manager. A run of good results has followed including their County Cup success’s. Have also formed a new Reserves side this season competing in Essex Women’s Division One, after a slow start the side is now in a rich vein of form in third position right amongst the title challengers.

  C&K Basildon Ladies have improved year on year as, promoted to the FAWPL Southern Division, have not only consolidated their status at that level but progressed up the table reaching the top of the league itself earlier in the season to date their highest league position in the women’s football pyramid. Currently 2nd in the table a point behind leaders Crystal Palace Ladies and have two games in hand. They too have a Reserves side their Development team currently 3rd in the FAWPL Reserve Southern Division.

Road to the Final

   Both sides were given a bye in the Essex Women’s County Cup to the quarter final stage along with Billericay Town Ladies, Writtle Ladies and Colchester Town Ladies all from the ERWFL Premier Division. A tough tie for Brentwood  Town Ladies in the quarter final draw away to local rivals Billericay Town Ladies a bit of competition always guaranteed between the sides it was Brentwood Town Ladies who were celebrating after the final whistle reaching the semi-finals with a 2-0 win. C&K Basildon Ladies were handed a home tie against Colchester Town Ladies and progressed without kicking a ball as the ERWFL side had unfortunately folded earlier in the season. 

 Into the semi-finals and Brentwood Town Ladies were at home this time up against fellow ERWFL Premier Division side Writtle Ladies this tie going all the way. The sides drawing 2-2 after 90 minutes and beyond the tie headed into a penalty shootout Brentwood Town Ladies emerging 4-2 winners to reach their 1st ever County Cup Final. C&K Basildon Ladies were also at home in the semi-finals and were at last kicking a ball in the competition hosting Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies from ERWFL Division One South who had come all the way through from the initial Preliminary Round. C&K Basildon Ladies finishing the game the stronger running out 9-0 winners to reach their 4th successive final.

The new stadium at Aveley FC

 A new venue for this evenings Essex Women’s County Cup Final, Aveley FC’s brand new stadium. An impressive looking modern main building housing the changing rooms, a very large clubhouse and bar along with fully equipped kitchen. Seating in front of the main building with a balcony inside the clubhouse/bar over looking the pitch too. A smaller seated stand opposite the pitch an all-weather 3G surface another 1st for the Essex Women’s County Cup Final. A wet journey down from Norfolk, thankfully the rain had stopped by the time I arrived at the ground, plenty of parking outside. Overcast by thankfully any rain would stay away for the match.

 It’s Basildon to kick off the final 1st half wearing and all red kit with Brentwood lined up opposite wearing navvy shirts and shorts with blue socks. The ball played out long to the left Angela Addison immediately on the move down that flank, along with her twin sister Therese operating down the right side in attack the pair have been a revelation since breaking into the 1st team earlier in the season. Plenty of pace Angela Addison sees her ball knocked on in to the area intercepted the rebound coming straight to Basildon captain Zoe Rushen 20 yards out shoots over from a central position. 

   Rushen comes forwards again in support of Therese Addison on the right getting past her inside the right channel into the area her low crossed squared across the six yard box, goalkeeper Kelly Walker diving onto the ball for Brentwood. Coming forwards with the ball Laura Wheeler plays it forwards into Drew Allen on the left for Brentwood has help on the inside from Georgia Holdaway receiving the pass takes the ball on looking to get in behind the Basildon defence fouls Basildon’s Danica Revell in the process the free kick going against her.

   The Addison sisters are lively attacking down the flanks for Basildon on either side breaking forwards have the Brentwood defence pinned back, Therese’s cross from the right swerving over the crossbar. A coming together between Brentwood at the back between Emma Hooker and Amy Vernon as the ball is played long from Basildon up to Therese Addison sees the attacking running in clear behind, the ball skipping off the 3G surface Walker is able to advance towards the edge of her box and clear before the attacker can close her down.

   Walker then produces a great save to deny Angela Addison scoring the opening goal as she breaks clear on the left side pushing on into the top of the area before firing in a fierce shot, angling in near post Walker beats the ball away sending it spinning away across the face of goal out for a corner kick. A good delivery from the corner coming in centrally Jay Blackie rising to meet it with her head 8 yards out on target is caught high by Walker in the Brentwood goal. A dominant start to the match from Basildon, Brentwood opportunities to attack are limited, Wheeler plays the ball over the top for Chloe Wilkinson in attack to try and chase down too much to do as the ball is gathered by goalkeeper Nikita Runnacles at the top of her area.

  GOAL! 13 minutes on the clock and Basildon open the scoring a long range diagonal ball from midfield picking out Angela Addison breaking in behind the Brentwood defence coming into a central position controls the ball in the area 10 yards out before slotting a low shot past Walker to make it 0-1.

   Basildon continue to press forwards a good ball from Blackie in the middle coming to receive the ball sends Therese Addison away on the right her cross going long across the six yard box. Blackie charges down Walker’s clearance as she comes out of her area to clear the ball the ball rebounding away to her right, no Basildon player is there to capitalise as Brentwood captain Danielle Butler gets back to hook the ball clear. 

  Ellie manning comes on from right back to help Therese Addison the ball played on for her the attacker taking on the Brentwood defence into the area lays the ball back towards April Bowers arriving at the top of the area opening up her body to shoot puts her effort wide across goal at the far post. Bowers is the furthest forwards again for Basildon moments later throwing herself at the ball crossed in towards the far post from the right can’t quiet connect with the ball inside the six yard box. 

   Brentwood are busy in defence, Nicole Manning making a vital interception inside the area, Marie Barker back to win the ball passes onto Wheeler she looks to get Holdaway forwards, Hayley West winning the tackle against her at the back for Basildon, a swift counter attack the ball into Kerry-Anne Stimson on for Angela Addison breaking down the left side a mazy run on the ball the Brentwood defence back pedalling, tries to set up her sister moving into a central position top of the area, Manning cutting the pass out.

   The Addison sisters look to link up in attack once more both breaking away down either flank Therese putting the cross in earlier along the top of the box Angela with the knock on into the area Manning stays with her keeping her eye on the ball putting in the defensive block as the attacker goes to shoot the ball turned behind for the corner. An very good delivery from the corner on the left side an inswinging ball whipped in with pace Walker under pressure beating the ball away on her goal line before Basildon can pounce on the loose ball play is stopped with a Brentwood player down on the line. 

  A strong tackle by Wheeler on Blackie at the top of the area sees the Brentwood player win the ball after Ellie Manning gets forwards to cross into her from the right. Walker rushing out of her area slides into to win the ball from Angela Addison as the attacker bursts clear, does get the ball but takes Addison out too the referee awarding the free-kick. Rushen a dead ball specialist sends a shot from the angle in on goal Walker palming it up over her crossbar makes the save. The corner whipped in with pace towards the near post Angela Addison attempting the diving header can’t get anything on the ball as Brentwood scramble it clear.

  Laken Duchar-Clark with the ball on the right on for Bowers played into Rushen her shot from distance held comfortably by the keeper. Brentwood with a rare attack Jess Mills with the ball into Wilkinson has support coming from Barker she passes the ball out to Drew Allen on the left side looking to come in field now way past Ellie Manning as the full back puts in the challenge to regain possession of the ball. A caution for Mills as she blocks Angela Addison on the left the ball into the area defended by Hooker. Therese Addison takes on Vernon down the right getting the better of the full back wrong footing her top of the area gets inside pulling the trigger drags her low shot wide across the face of goal. Bowers with the ball for Basildon 30 yards out central goes to shoot her effort charged down is enough to deflect the ball narrowly wide of the far post a corner awarded.

GOAL! Closing on in on the last five minutes of the 1st half Basildon double their lead another good delivery from the corner a high ball played into the crowded six yard box a Brentwood head on the ball knocks the ball away from goal dropping to the edge of the area. Angela Addison eyes must light up as the ball is presented straight to her she strikes it sending a thunderbolt through the crowd into the back of the net beyond 0-2. 

 Angela Addison pressing with the ball turns inside from the left into the area her cross along the six yards box Blackie letting the ball run across her turns and shoots Allen back in defence blocking the ball it spins behind for the corner. Playing in short towards the top of the area the shot is taken the ball striking to post, players from both sides scrambling to get to the ball Walker has gone down with a knock the referee stopping play so she can receive treatment. 

 4 minutes of stoppage time to be played Basildon ending the 1st half as strongly as they started it pushing forwards, a cross squared in low from the left Walker misses her low catch at the top of her six yard box plenty of players in the area the ball pin-balling around as Brentwood put in the blocks a shot from Therese Addison squeezes through Walker recovering well back on her feet on her line saves with her legs the ball deflected away. 

   Rushen getting into the area sees her shot charged down by Vernon deflected away for a corner kick. The delivery in from the right going long across the top of the six yard box Angela Addison up to head the ball, Brentwood have the far post covered the defending the ball clear a late chance for Brentwood to break the ball played long Wilkinson giving chase, Runnacles having not had much to do in the 1st half alert and out to the edge of her area to gather the ball into her gloves.

   A 2-0 half-time lead for Basildon have dominated the 1st half in attack, Brentwood have been defending well kept busy at the back keeping the scoreline down. Walker making some fine saves too. Haven’t created much going forwards with no attempts at goal pushed back into their own areas for large spells getting players up in support of Wilkinson in attack hasn’t been easy, the Addison twins posing a real threat on either flank for Basildon with Blackie, Rushen and Bowers though the middle all capable of creating something from distance if given room on the ball. At 2-0 however the final is far from being settled.

 A double change for Brentwood at the break, Mills and Wheeler off 20 and 3 on for Brentwood but without a final team-sheet to confirm which number belong to which player I can tell you no more. Brentwood to get the 2nd half underway I’ve come across to the opposite side to sit in the mainstand for the 2nd half the venue impressive under the floodlights. Basildon with the early attack regaining possession of the ball in the middle Rushen on for Angela Addison breaking in behind on the left the cross fired in centrally Walker coming out slides in well to save at Blackie’s feet. 

 GOAL! Ins’t long before Basildon extend their lead however as 3 minutes into the 2nd half Angela Addison completes her hat-trick. A lovely flighted long pass by Rushen up towards Addison inside the area left side great control the attacker turning inside her marker before driving her strike past the keeper into the back of the net 0-3.

 Brentwood are more than prepared to have a go at Basildon themselves when they can get forwards Barker receiving the ball in the middle brings it on before playing it forwards for Wilkinson she turns and drives at the Basildon defence, Revell standing her ground puts in the tackle. Holdaway trying to get a little more advanced to support Wilkinson 2nd half chests the ball down well moving to the left plays the ball inside West intercepting for Basildon the pass sent long with Angela Addison breaking away down the left touching in on into the area shoots putting the ball wide across the face of goal.

   Manning takes the ball on down the right for Basildon crossing the ball in low towards Therese Addison positioned near post 3 yards out closely marked her touch wrong-footing the Brentwood defender she gets a shot away Walker with the instinctive close range save beats the ball away. Basildon continue their dominance pushing players forwards, Barker back sliding in to stop Bowers setting up Blackie. Manning on down the right away her cross put in early into the area Walker keeps her eye on the ball catching cleanly as Bowers closes her down. 

  A shot at goal for Brentwood as the ball is played inside Wilkinson letting fly from 25 yards out her effort dragged wide doesn’t trouble Runnacles. Stimson has been the holding midfielder for Basildon a rare foray forwards she sees her shot from 25 yards out charged down. A corner on the right for Basildon whipped in near post defended well Brentwood try to break but the ball is lost. Therese Addison back to goal outside the box sees the ball into her body turns well moving inside onto to her right foot to shoot, Walker making another excellent save. 

  Brentwood get forwards the ball rolled out to Holdaway on the left her pass on for Allen she sends a squared cross into the area, Runnacles catching before Wilkinson can reach it. Walker is down injured looks painful as she stays down after colliding with Addison. Is a long pause in play as she receives treatment sadly cannot continue and has to come of Abigail Maynard the substitute goalkeeper onto the field. Play resumes Vernon with a fine tackle to stop Therese Addison on the right as she comes inside looking to take her on.

  GOAL! Moving into the final 15 minutes Basildon extend their lead, Angela Addison the provider this time as she is put away clear on the left side plenty of pace she fires the ball into the middle of the area aiming for Blackie, who shows great composure to let the ball run across her opening up her body to turn the ball wide past the keeper and on into the bottom corner of the net for a 0-4 lead.

  Brentwood go straight up the other end from the restart the game a little stretched showing a willingness to attack Runnacles has to make a save as the ball comes to Allen central 25 yards out has time to pull the trigger the ball arrowing in high on target Runnacles behind it tipping the shot up over her crossbar. The corner from the right going long and out at the far post. Brentwood come forwards Holdaway inside to Barker onto Wilkinson she tries to play Holdaway in behind on the left Manning stepping up to intercept the ball.

   A difficult ball for Maynard to deal with up the other end the high ball flung into the box from the left the keeper doing well to pluck the ball down from under her crossbar, Vernon kicking the ball away for the corner. 

 GOAL! From the 81st minute corner Basildon extend their lead, the delivery from Manning again very good fired in along the top of the six yards box the perfect high for Rushen who gets up highest to put her head on the ball and drive it into the goal 0-5. 

 A triple change for Basildon follows the goal with Runnacles, West and Bowers off, on come goalkeeper Jamie-Lee Bamford, Tilly Deacon in defence and Karissa Rodney in attack. Basildon press on winning a corner on the right the ball into the six yard box headed clear by Brentwood, Revell onto the ball outside the area screws her 20 yard shot wide of goal. The Brentwood defence will have a few ball prints adorning their bodies come the morning as they put in a succession of blocks inside the box in their determination to prevent Basildon scoring as repeated shots are taken, Manning, Vernon and Allen all putting their bodies in the way of the ball.

   Rodney with a chance to score for Basildon as the Addison sisters combine in attack Angela with the cross in long from the left Therese with the touch to square the ball back into Rodney central scoops the ball up over the crossbar from six yards out a deflection spotted a corner awarded. The keeper with a good save at close range from a Rodney shot at the near post. 

GOAL! Into stoppage time a bit to be played with the injury to Walker and Basildon score a sixth goal breaking from a Brentwood attack Duchar-Clark with the interception plays the past long the Brentwood defence stretched Rodney away in behind on the left Angela Addison running central into the box the cross squared into her she stays on her feet as the challenge comes in digging the ball out of her feet and slotting it past the keeper for her 4th of the match, putting Basildon into a 0-6 lead.

GOAL! The lead is further extended 4 minutes into stoppage time a free-kick wide right outside the box as Vernon up ended Therese Addison. Rushen over the set-piece goes for goal the ball going long towards the far post plenty of pace on the ball finds in gap in the crowded six yard box and nestles inside the post 0-7.

   That’s it the final whistle blows and C&K Basildon Ladies win a fifth recorded equalling Essex Women’s County Cup Final a fourth successive County Cup win too. A dominant display right from the off getting players forwards. Brentwood knowing they would take some stopping battled well and defended well for large parts of the game but without being able to get the ball up the other end for any length of time the Basildon attacks were coming at them frequently. Some fine saves from Walker keeping the scoreline down was just 3-0 going into the final 10 minutes of the game. Basildon though are a strong side and have were composed and disciplined at the back.

Women’s Football East – Player of the Match

 A fairly straightforward choice for this evening’s Women’s Football East – Player of the Match. Lively right from the start and full of running with or without the ball at her feet creating plenty of goal scoring opportunities for herself and her teammates, and scoring 4 well taken goals in the final of the Essex Women’s County Cup it is of course Angela Addison.

C&K Basildon Ladies, 5 times Essex Women’s County Cup winners

 Congratulations to C&K Basildon Ladies on their record equalling County Cup success winning a 4th successive final. Ultimately a 7-0 loss but congratulation to go to Brentwood Town Ladies on reaching their 1st ever County Cup Final. An enjoyable trip to Aveley FC this evening.

Essex Women’s Premier Division 

Three matches played in the Essex Women’s Premier Division, two of those featuring Chelmsford City Ladies & Frontiers Ladies as the pair met for a double header. Chelmsford City Ladies bringing an end to Frontiers unbeaten record in the league as they won by a single goal in the 1st game scored in the 2nd half by Megan Bliss.

  Honours even in the 2nd game as Chelmsford City collected 4 points from the afternoon closing the gap to Frontiers to just a point in the process in 5th spot in the league both sides scoring in the 1st half, Kay Foy on target for Frontiers, Niki Medici getting the goal for Chelmsford City in a 1-1 draw.

   Points dropped for Frontiers sees them drop to 3rd spot in the Premier Division as Lawford won big away from home to leapfrog them in the table on Sunday. Taking on Beacon Hill Rovers Ladies, Jasmine Cox moving clear as top scorer for Lawford as she netted 5 goals to take her onto 22 from 11 appearances so far this season. There was a goal each for Tyler Christou, Ella Boyden and Keeley Brickwood her 1st goal for Lawford in an 8-1 victory. Jo Smeaton scoring in the 2nd half for Beacon Hill Rovers. Lawford are now 5 points behind leaders Hatfield Peverel Ladies with a game in hand.

Essex Women’s League Cup

Hatfield Peverel Ladies were in action in the quarter finals of the Essex Women’s League Cup this Sunday at home to Harlow Town Ladies Reserves. The hosts finding themselves trailing 2-0 at half-time, shew plenty of grit and determination in the 2nd half to get it back to 2-2 with just a couple of minutes left in the 90. Christa Osman scoring both the goals for Hatfield Peverel from the penalty spot. Having comeback form trailing 2-0 at half-time to force the tie into extra-time Hatfield Peverel then went on to win the tie extra period. Yasmin Cowley scoring early on to make it 3-2 with her 34th goal of the season. Rosie Robinson with her 2nd goal of the season scoring late in extra-time to ensure Hatfield Peverel reached the semi-finals. 

  It will be a while yet before Hatfield Peverel Ladies will know who their semi-final opponents will as Corringham Cosmos the current League Cup holders were only playing their 2nd Round tie this Sunday after numerous delays. At home to fellow Premier Division side Eastern Avenue, the visitors scoring twice with Katie Peers the clubs top scorer with 15 goals getting a brace it wasn’t enough however as a hat-trick from Rebecca Gallagher taking her onto 13 goals for the season was enough to see Corringham Cosmos through to the quarter finals where the will be at home to Hullbridge Sports Ladies. Hatfield Peverel will be at home in the semi-final, a big game whoever they get, likewise in the other semi-final where Lawford Ladies will be at home to Frontiers Ladies.

Essex Women’s Division One

There was also a double header this weekend in Essex Women’s Division One with Southend United Ladies at home taking on Alresford Colne Rangers. A comfortable win for Southend United in the 1st match leading 4-0 at half-time went on to seal a 5-0 win in the 2nd half 5 different goalscorers in the match with Charlotte Anderson, Emily Gowland, Sophie Smith, Emily Pert and Lily-Maree Halliday all getting on the scoresheet. 

  In the 2nd match a much closer game the points were shared both sides scoring a goal in each half to draw 2-2. Morgan Hayes and Sophie Smith getting the goals for Southend United. Jasmine Warner and Lucie Stanbury finding the back of the net for Alresford Colne Rangers. The 4 points earned see Southend United move to the top of Division One a pint ahead of Hullbridge Sports Ladies who saw there game away to Rayleigh Town Ladies postponed this Sunday. 

  In 3rd position in Division One, Brentwood Town Ladies Reserves good form continues as they move to within a point of 2nd placed Hullbridge winning away to Billericay Town Ladies Reserves on Sunday. Carla Rose scoring a brace in the game for Brentwood there were goals too for Emma Mackie, Kirstie Jackson and Joanne Attridge in a 5-1 win. Giulia Francesconi scoring for Billericay.

   Leigh Ramblers make up the top 4 in Division One a tight contest at the top they themselves just 3 points from leaders Southend United after they won well away from home on Sunday against Benfleet Villa Ladies. Katherine Newton, Sasha Vail and Molly Clarke all scoring a brace, one of Clarke’s goals from the penalty spot. Abbi Brown also on target in a 7-0 win.

    Making up the top 5 in Division One Dagenham & Redbridge are just 3 points further back. Also won at the weekend at home to FC Clacton Ladies securing the 3 points with a 5-1 win.

Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership

New leaders in the Cambridgeshire Women’s Premiership this weekend as Netherton United Ladies season long grip of top spot in the league is ended by St Ives Town Ladies moving into the leaders position for the 1st time in their short history. Started the day 6 points behind the leaders this Sunday saw them competing in a double header against bottom side Park Ladies. Two strong performances from St Ives Town seeing them take all 6 points available. 10 goals scored without reply in the two games. Amy Seymour-Shove and Frances Chapman getting a brace each with Tierney Coulson and Georgia Stancombe also on the scoresheet with goal a piece in the 1st game winning 6-0. 4-0 the winning scoreline in the other match with Coulson starting on the bench getting a brace, Chapman and Stancombe again getting a goal each too. 

  Also in the Premiership 3rd placed Newmarket Town Ladies close the gap to Netherton United to 4 points with 2 games in hand after a big win at home to March Town United Ladies on Sunday morning. Sarah O-Rourke scoring a brace inside the opening 12 minutes to put Newmarket on the front foot. Abbi Griffin soon adding a 3rd goal. Chloe Slater also on target with a goal midway through the 1st half to see Newmarket into a 4-0 half-time lead. O’Rourke going on to complete her hat-trick in the 2nd half. Griffin also adding another goal with 20 minutes left to play. Newmarket going on to win the match 9-0 another player celebrating scoring a hat-trick, midfielder Laura Bailey a double as she was also celebrating her 17th birthday.

Cambridgeshire Women’s Junior Invitation Cup

The semi-finals of the Cambridgeshire Women’s Junior Invitation Cup this Sunday. In the all Premiership clash, ICA Sports Ladies were celebrating after they reached their 2nd final of the season. Away to Cambridge City Ladies Development this was a tough one to call both sides steadily improving as the season has gone on and in the end it was just a single goal that settled the tie. Jessica Farchina with the goal to send ICA Sports through to the final.

  In the other semi-final it was an all Cambridgeshire Championship South tie with Isleham United Ladies at home to Newmarket Town Ladies Reserves. Their 1st team taking on ICA Sports Ladies in this season’s League Cup Final Newmarket Town Reserves were looking to make it a repeat in the Junior Invitation Cup Final however Isleham had other idea’s as they were leading 2-1 after 20 minutes went on to take a 3-1 lead before Hollie Turner, Newmarket’s goal scorer in the 1st half added a 2nd from the penalty spot with 15 minutes left to make it 3-2 set up a tense finish Isleham holding out though to reach the final. Lily Turner scoring twice in the match with Rachael Turner also on the scoresheet for Isleham.

Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship North

Two matches in Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship North this Sunday and it was a bad day at the office for 2nd placed Wisbech St Mary Ladies as they saw their unbeaten record end with a heavy loss at home to league leaders Ketton Ladies. An 8 point lead at the top for Ketton now as they scored 8 goals at the weekend, Sascha Smith amongst the goals scoring a hat-trick.

  Wisbech Town Ladies like most teams in the Championship North have games in hand on the league leaders however their pursuit suffered a blow at the weekend as they were narrowly beaten at home by Riverside Ladies, the Peterborough based side winning 5 from 5 now as they entered the league late. Wisbech Town suffering from absences and illness went 1-0 down in the match before turning it around to lead 2-1 at the break, Faye Kowalewsky and Josie Turner getting their goals. Riverside turning it around in the 2nd half as they were awarded two soft penalties Annie Posnett scoring both to see them lead 3-2. Added a 4th goal to open up a 2 goal lead Jess Hill and Samantha Woodham with their other goals. Turner pulling it back to 4-3 with 20 minutes left but despite pushing hard for an equaliser Riverside claimed all 3 points and move above Wisbech Town into 3rd position in the table.

Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship South

Two matches played in the Cambridgeshire Women’s Championship South also this Sunday. In a top of the table clash 2nd placed Histon Ladies Reserves were taking on leaders Fulbourn Institute Bluebirds aiming to close down the 3 point gap between the sides. Came up against a striker in red hot form this season as Marie Stubbings was on target for another hat-trick to take her onto 35 goals for the season. Fulbourn opening up a 6 point lead at the top of the Championship South table with a 3-1 win. 

Bottom side Burwell Tigers have had a difficult season on zero points at the bottom of the Championship South table were hosting 3rd placed St Ives Town Ladies Development on Sunday. Had something to celebrate at last as they claimed a point in a 1-1 draw, Danielle Fletcher scoring the goal. Jess Guthurie scoring the goal for St Ives Town.

Cambridgeshire Women’s Division One Cup

In the Cambridgeshire Women’s Division One Cup there were two matches played in the group stage this Sunday both involving Championship North clubs. In Group C, Hungate Rovers Ladies claimed their 1st group win with a 2-0 home win over Orton Rangers Ladies. Whilst in Group D Spalding United Ladies drew 0-0 at home to Pinchbeck United Ladies both sides taking a point home from their final match.

Beds & Herts Women’s League Cup

An extra-time winner for Northwood Ladies saw them reach the final of the Beds & Herts Women’s League Cup in their debut season this Sunday and will face St Albans Ladies in the final on Sunday 13th May. A clash between the top two currently in Division One. Northwood were drawn away to the current league cup holders Houghton Athletic Ladies in the semi-finals. A goal from, Holly Thomson for Houghton Athletic and a goal for Northwood scored by Emma Steele saw the sides drawing 1-1 after 90 minutes were up the match heading into extra-time. The winning goal coming early in the 2nd period of extra play, Zamina Rahemtulla scoring the goal to send Northwood into the League Cup Final.

The Chris Renshaw Cup

Also semi-final time in The Chris Renshaw Cup this Sunday. Division One side Sherrardswood Ladies at home to Division Two high flyers, Welwyn Pegasus Sapphires. A 9 goal thriller between the sides saw the winner coming deep into extra-time. Laurie Marris scoring twice for Sherrardswood in the 1st half her 1st goal from the penalty spot the Division One side found themselves trailing 3-2 at half-time. Welwyn Pegasus Sapphires battling to keep their lead 2nd half, Marris found the back of the net for the 3rd time to complete her hat-trick with less than 10 minutes left to play 3-3 after the 90 the game heading into extra-time. Welwyn Pegasus Sapphires retook the lead early in the extra period but again Sherrardswood came back Victoria Little making it 4-4 the game looking to be heading for penalties, Sherrardswood scored again at the death, Manjinder Atwal with the winning goal to put the Division One side through the the final. A crushing end to the match for Welwyn Pegasus Sapphires their goal scorers, Chemise Huitson, Ellie Burke and April Spang with a brace.

In the other semi-final in The Chris Renshaw Cup, it was an all Division Two clash with Hitchin Town Ladies hosting Letchworth Garden City Eagles. The visitors holding the advantage at half-time Letchworth leading 1-0. Hitchin Town coming straight back into the match with the equaliser 2 minutes after the restart, Emma Chaffey with the goal. On 63 minutes Letchworth got back into the lead and this time kept Hitchin Town from scoring again to win the match 2-1 and reach the final against Sherrardswood Ladies, again scheduled for Sunday 13th May, Tayla Murray and Simone Leah Straughn scoring the Letchworth goals.

Beds & Herts Women’s Division One

Two matches in Beds & Herts Women’s Division One this Sunday. Leaders St Albans Ladies are almost their are now just 1 win away from becoming league champions, on 29 points only 3rd placed Sherrardswood who can yet reach 31 points can catch them. A league and cup double very much in the sights for St Albans they were away to Flitwick Ladies this weekend. Goals from Sophie Lawrence, Katie Grehan and Suzanne Read seeing St Albans to a 3-0 half-time lead. Read netting her 2nd of the match early in the 2nd half to make it 4-0, Kerry Twigg also getting in on the scoring to extend the lead further, Flitwick pulling a goal back with 15 minutes left, Zoe Jayne Barber on target. St Albans winning 5-1.

  A huge win at home for Garston Ladies on Sunday against bottom side Watton Ladies saw them move up to 4th in the Division One table. Both Jane Hales and Emma Trill getting 5 goals each in the game. Bobbi Rhodes also grabbing herself a brace with a goal each for Kelly Spencer and Katie Sills in a 14-0 win.

Beds & Herts Women’s Division Two

One match in Beds & Herts Women’s Division Two on Sunday, 3rd placed Royston Town Ladies Development coming out on top in an 8 goal contest at home to Evergreen Eagles to move level on points with 2nd placed Welwyn Pegasus Sapphires. Jazmin Racher scoring a hat-trick for Royston Town, Samantha Takis netting a hat-trick for Evergreen Eagles. Goals from Harriet Smith and Paige Rolfe seeing Royston Town claim all 3 points with a 5-3 victory.

Beds & Herts Women’s Division Three

 Two games in Beds & Herts Women’s Division Three on Sunday. 3rd placed Welwyn Pegasus Azures were away to Bedwell Rangers Ladies. Janiece Allen once again in fine goal scoring form as she claimed a 1st half hat-trick before going to add a further two goals in the 2nd half to take her onto 25 for the season. Sophie Clarke also scoring in the 1st half for Welwyn Pegasus Azures with Tulin Rufaioglu getting a brace in the 2nd half. Georgia Miller scoring late in the match for Bedwell Rangers. 8-1 the final score Welwyn Pegasus Azures playing the 2nd half with 10 players too after Chantel Joseph was red carded late in the 1st half.

Evergreen Ladies remain hot on Welwyn Pegasus Azures heels in 4th place in the Division Three table the gap 3 points with a game in hand as they won away to Shefford Town & Campton Ladies this Sunday. Bianca Contonicola and Samantha Jackson with the goals as Evergreen recorded a 2-0 win.

Suffolk Women’s County Cup

 The Suffolk Women’s County Cup Finals were played this Sunday after both were called off last weekend. At neutral venues, Ipswich Town Ladies the current holders of the competition were playing ERWFL Division One North side Ipswich Wanderers Ladies. Initially the tie did start last Sunday, Jordan Arnoup from the penalty spot putting Ipswich Town ahead in the 16th minute but conditions were deteriorating and when an Ipswich Wanderers player was injured the game was abandoned the sides set to try again this Sunday. 

   Ipswich Town again getting in front inside the opening 15 minutes Sophie Welton scoring the goal. Ipswich Town fashioned further chances in the 1st half but weren’t able to extend their lead as Ipswich Wanderers held them to 1-0 at the break. Ipswich Town had a much better 2nd half Miagh Downey doubling their lead 5 minutes into the half. Zoe Cossey and captain Amanda Crump added a goal each to see the lead 4-0 on the hour. Welton with her 2nd of the game making it 5-0 to put Ipswich Town in full control of the tie. Natasha Thomas making it 6-0 with 15 left on the clock Cossey added her 2nd of the match late on to make the final score 7-0 to send Ipswich Town into their 4th successive final.

 Ipswich Town’s opponents in the Suffolk Women’s County Cup Final will be AFC Sudbury Ladies after the ERWFL Premier Division side beat Suffolk Women’s Division side Leiston St Margarets Ladies. Two league between the sides, Leiston St Margarets have been in great form AFC Sudbury taking nothing for granted opened the scoring midway through the 1st half, Rebecca Chandler getting the goal. Phoebe Guiver also scoring in the 1st half to see AFC Sudbury leading 2-0 at half-time. Striker Stacey Teager coming on in the 2nd half netted a brace to double AFC Sudbury’s lead the final score 5-0 with Sophie Jeffery netting a goal in the last 15 minutes. 

  A repeat of the 2014/15 final AFC Sudbury v Ipswich Town Ladies will be played on Monday 7th May (Bank Holiday) with a 12:00pm kick-off at Colchester United FC

Suffolk Women’s Division

 Two matches played in the Suffolk Women’s Division at the weekend. After 4 successive draws in the league, leaders East Bergholt United Ladies finally got back to winning way away to AFC Kesgrave Ladies on Sunday. All the goals coming in the 1st half Charlotte McGrath, Annie Northwood and Millie Wilding all finding the back of the net in a 3-0 win.

   A comfortable win at home for Brantham Athletic Ladies on Sunday sees them climb back above Bacton United Ladies into 2nd spot in the Suffolk Women’s Division table. Were taking on Ipswich Athletic Youth Ladies. Goals from Lucy Dunnett, Kirsten Hutchings, Carra Marie Seeley and Jodie Sharp plus a brace from Danielle Harvey seeing Brantham Athletic run out 6-0 winners.

Norfolk Women’s County Cup

 One of countless matches postponed last weekend due to the snow fall King’s Lynn Town Ladies were hosting Acle United Ladies in the semi final of the Norfolk Women’s County Cup. Both sides playing in the ERWFL Division One North and Premier Division respectfully. The winner of the tie going on to face Wymondham Town Ladies in the Final to be played at the FDC on Friday 27th April.

   Acle United started the match the stronger creating chances as they forced King’s Lynn back into their own half. It was the hosts however who opened the scoring midway through the 1st half the ball put into the back of the net by Oksana Imanalijeva. Acle United coming back into the tie to level the scores just before half-time captain Megan Todd making it 1-1. Acle United started the 2nd half as strongly as they had the 1st creating more opportunities in front of goal finally taking one in the 63rd minute midfielder Laura Holden scoring the goal to put them 2-1 ahead. Defending the lead Acle United had further chances but in the end held on for the 2-1 win to send them into their 3rd County Cup Final. 

Norfolk Women’s League Cup

 In another game postponed from last weekend it was also semi-final action from the Norfolk Women’s League Cup on Sunday a repeat of last season’s final with Thorpe United Ladies hosting current holders Bungay Town Ladies. The sides sharing a 7 goal thriller in the finish Bungay getting off to a great start were leading the game 3-1 at half-time. Thorpe United mounted a come back in the 2nd half scoring twice more to level the scores at 3-3 before Bungay came back to win the match 4-3 to reach their 2nd successive league cup final where they will play FC Sprowston Ladies on Sunday 6th May at Norwich United’s Plantation Park. Emily Leach netting twice for Bungay with a goal each for Nicola Hazell and Samantha Walker. Rebekah Lake, Shanice Sutton and Alice Smith on target for Thorpe United. 

Norfolk Women’s Division One

 In Norfolk Women’s Division One on Sunday, Emily Watts was making a welcome return to action for bottom side Long Stratton Ladies after over a year out of the game through injury. Jumped straight to the top of their goal scoring charts too as she netted a brace in the game for the side struggling at the bottom of the league. It was opponents Wymondham Town Ladies who came away from Long Stratton with all 3 points however as the scored 5 goals to take them up from 7th to 5th in the league table.

 Stalham Town Ladies 4th in the Division One table were at home to North Walsham Angels Ladies in a local derby on Sunday a close game between the side, Stalham edged the result 2-1 to claim all 3 points for their 5th league win of the season.

Norfolk Women’s Division Two

 A piece of sad news to bring from Norfolk Women’s Division Two and that is the unfortunate folding of another club in the East, Toftwood United Ladies. A Dereham boy myself growing up it’s sad to hear. The club has struggled for numbers this season however and with the mens club also going it was on the cards. Wishing everyone involved with Toftwood all the best for the future and hope to see everyone continuing in the game somewhere in the future.

A hat-trick for Bure Valley Wildcats, Charlie Cooper on Sunday

  In Norfolk Women’s Division Two there were two matches played on Sunday. Fair to say it has taken Bure Valley Wildcats Ladies young side a little while to adapt to women’s football but after a tough start to life in the league the side has grown and developed well showing great form as they won their 3rd consecutive league match this Sunday to see the consolidate 4th position in the table. At home to Kirkley & Pakefield FC Ladies a strong 1st half saw Bure Valley Wildcats leading 3-0 at the break before going on to score another 5 in the 2nd half to win 8-0. Charlie Cooper top scoring in the match getting a hat-trick. Kiera Brown netting a brace along with a goal for Emma Macmillan her 1st goal this season, plus an own goal.

 Another young side getting to grips with life in Division Two are Gorleston Rangers Ladies were away to Freethorpe Ladies on Sunday. A 1-0 win for Gorleston Rangers in the reverse fixture back in December their 1st in the league. Winning last time out earned another point away from home this Sunday Chloe Bailey getting a brace in a 2-2 draw. Freethorpe’s goal coming from Andrea Colbrook and Kiera Squires.

ERWFL Premier Division

Three matches to bring you from the ERWFL Premier Division this Sunday. Bedford Ladies in 5th position in the table were at home to 2nd placed Cambridge City Ladies who were looking to close the 7 point gap to league leaders Billericay Town Ladies. Despite goals from Bronte Rapley and Bella Simmons, Cambridge City were beaten heavily with Bedford scoring 5 up the other end to take all 3 points moving them up to 4th place in the table. No details of their goalscorers.

   Brentwood Town Ladies were preparing for the Essex Women’s County Cup Final taking on holders C&K Basildon Ladies at Aveley FC on Thursday night, were at home to AFC Dunstable Ladies this Sunday both in mid-table in the ERWFL Premier Division. A point a piece in the finish with the sides drawing 1-1 Georgia Holdaway with her 10th first team goal of the season for Brentwood, whilst substitute Bianca Vassell scored her 1st goal for Dunstable. The sides meet again in two weeks time in the semi-finals of the League Cup.

After suffering a number of postponements Royston Town Ladies were finally in league action this weekend just the 2nd time in 2018 have a busy few weeks coming up as they catch up on their fixtures. Were at home to bottom side Colney Heath Ladies. A spirited performance from the visitors Royston Town eventually coming out as 2-0 winners to claim all 3 points, The goals scored by Becky Shephard and Hayley Graham.

ERWFL Division One North

Two matches in ERWFL Division One North this Sunday, league leaders Wymondham Town Ladies extending their lead at the top to 4 points with victory away to bottom side Silver End United Ladies. The winning score 3-0 to the visitors striker Hannah Waters getting all three goals scoring twice in the 1st half before completing her hat-trick early in the 2nd half 17 goals from 12 appearances now for Wymondham Town since joining from Lowestoft.

  A reverse of last weekend fixture Histon Ladies travelled to Suffolk this Sunday to play Ipswich Town Ladies Development. A 3-1 win for Histon last time out, a tighter affair this time around saw defences on top as the sides contested a goalless draw to take away a share of the points.

ERWFL Division One South

A 2-1 defeat for Harlow Town Ladies last time out the 2nd placed side returned to winning ways on the road this Sunday away to Bishops Stortford Ladies to go 3 points clear of Little Thurrock Dynamos Ladies. A brace each for Hannah Clifford and Lily Bruno along with a goal for Abbey Dell seeing Harlow run out 5-1 winners. Heather Martin getting the goal for Bishops Stortford. 

A 3rd straight defeat in the league for Little Thurrock Dynamos after a long unbeaten start to the season, hit the rocks again this Sunday away to bottom side Hertford Town Ladies. Another good result for Hertford their 3rd league win of the season lifting them off the foot of the ERWFL Division One South table a single goal enough to secure all 3 points the goal coming from Lisa Kline on her debut. 

 A single goal also enough to seal the win away from home for 4th placed Hutton Ladies this Sunday too in Division One South taking on Hoddesdon Tow Owls Ladies, Katie Lowen with the strike her 8th goal of the season.

FA Women’s Cup

Charlton Athletic Women were the only side left from outside the FAWSL left in the FA Women’s Cup reaching the last 8 a great achievement for the side leading the FAWPL Southern Division going into the quarter final on Sunday up against 14 times winners of the FA Women’s Cup, Arsenal Women at Borehamwood. Postponed from last Sunday it was a special occasion for Charlton Athletic striker, Kit Graham making her 200th appearance for the club. A big test up against Arsenal the FAWSL club taking an early lead in the tie awarded a penalty in the 4th minute, Scottish International, Kim Little stepping up to score. Arsenal created further chances throughout the 2nd half Charlton working hard in defence keeping the score down to 1-0 at half-time.

  10 minutes into the 2nd half Arsenal doubled their lead Heather O’Reilly sending the ball home to make it 2-0 then 5 minutes later it was 3-0 to the hosts with Dutch International Vivianne Miedema scoring the goal. As Charlton Athletic began to tire towards the latter stages of the match Arsenal took advantage to further extend their lead in the final 5 minutes with England’s Danielle Carter and Jordan Nobbs both getting their names on the scoresheet to send Arsenal into the semi-finals. An away trip to Everton Ladies awaits on the 15th April with Chelsea Ladies at home to Manchester City Women in the other semi-final and for the 1st time in history both games will be shown live by the BBC.

FAWPL Cup

At last Coventry United Ladies got to play their semi-final in the FAWPL Cup on Sunday after several postponement due to the weather and other fixtures. A long trip up to Lancashire to play Northern Division side Blackburn Rovers Ladies the winner meeting Leicester City Women in the Final. Keeley Davies getting the goal to put Coventry United into a 1-0 half-time lead. A screamer into the top corner from Helen Dermody in the 2nd half doubling Coventry United’s lead before Saffron Jordan pulled a goal back for Blackburn Rovers with 20 minutes left. The host pushing hard for an equalising goal broke Coventry United’s resistance in stoppage time Jordan with her 2nd of the match to take the tie into extra-time. A tense half hour followed with neither side able to win the game in open play the tie heading to penalties, heartbreak for Coventry United joy for Blackburn Rovers as they won the shootout 3-2 to reach the FAWPL Cup Final.

FAWPL Southern Division

With Charlton Athletic Women in action in the FA Women’s Cup this Sunday it was another opportunity for 2nd & 3rd placed Crystal Palace Ladies and C&K Basildon Ladies to move back above them at the top of the Southern Division table. Crystal Palace making to trip down south to play Portsmouth FC Ladies. The visitors celebrating an early goal and a fabulous milestone too for Crystal Palace’s Gemma Bryan as she scored her 100th goal for the club. 

   Ellie Bailes also on target in the 1st half to make it 2-0 to Crystal Palace who were awarded a penalty as the game closed in on the half hour, Bryan stepping up to score her 2nd of the match. 3-0 the advantage at half-time Crystal Palace made sure of the win extending their lead with 20 minutes left, Bryan going on to complete a hat-trick taking Crystal Palace back to the top of the Southern Division table.

C&K Basildon Ladies were also on the road travelling to Wales to play Cardiff City Ladies the 3rd placed side taking the lead with Paige Wakefield on target. 1-0 became 2-0 with Therese Addison putting the ball past the keeper. Cardiff City getting it back to 2-1 before the half-time whistle. A diving header from Angela Addison restored Basildon’s 2 goal lead. Again Cardiff City pulled a goal back to make it 3-2. Wakefield scoring her 2nd of the match to make it 4-2 and see Basildon win all 3 points taking them into 2nd position in the table. Sophie Thomas and Cori Williams scoring the goals for Cardiff City.

At home in the league for the 1st time since November, Chichester City Ladies were hosting Gillingham FC Ladies in the Southern Division this Sunday. The sides going in all square at the break a single goal was enough to secure all 3 points the goal for the hosts with Jess Lewry sending the ball into the back of the net on the hour to put Chichester City in front and seal the win.

Fourth placed Lewes FC Women were also finally back in league action after cup competitions had kept them busy since the end of November. At home were taking on Queens Park Rangers this Sunday. Chances not taken it looked as though the sides would be going in level at the break, Lewes breaking the deadlock with a minute of the first half left to play, Rebecca Carter with her 11th goal of the season. Danielle Lane doubling Lewes lead 10 minutes into the 2nd half. The result made comfortable midway through the 2nd half as Sarah Kempson put the ball home to make it 3-0.

West Ham United Ladies excellent form in 2018 continues as they extend their unbeaten run to 9 games, a fourth straight win this Sunday away to bottom side Swindon Town Ladies. A narrow lead for the visitors at half-time Leanna Mabey with the goal. A blistering start to the 2nd half with youngster Kelly Wealthall netting with 22 seconds after kick-off to make it 2-0. Ellie Zoefpl scoring on 65 minutes to extend the lead to 3-0. Molly Clark then scoring to make it 4-0 her first goal for West Ham United. Weathall getting her 2nd of the game for a 5-0 lead with Zoefpl also getting her 2nd of the game in the final minute to see West Ham United win 6-0.

FAWPL South East Division One

Plenty of action too this Sunday in FAWPL South East Division One. League leaders AFC Wimbledon Ladies were a massive 16 points clear at the top of the table as they travelled to rivals Milton Keynes Dons Ladies on Sunday the 4th placed side with plenty of games in hand could yet catch AFC Wimbledon if they could claim maximum points in the run in. Women’s Football East was there to see all the action and the full match report can be found under this post. A competitive and tense affair between two committed sides had a derby feel to the match neither wanting to give anything away led to few opportunities being created in the final third the sides going in all square at 0-0 at half time at Newport Pagnell FC.

Milton Keynes, Alice Hughes with AFC Wimbledon’s Jenny Banfield

The deadlock broken early in the 2nd half the high tempo pace of the 1st half continuing Milton Keynes broke the ball out to striker Heather McDonnell moving wide left good hold-up play drawing players towards her the cross whipped into the box found Kim Farrow running in on goal her header taking the ball wide of the keeper into the back of the net to make it 1-0 a goal on her debut for the club. Milton Keynes working hard at the back and midfield to keep AFC Wimbledon at bay the visitors pushing for an equaliser striker Caroline Bisson coming closest putting her header just wide of the near post. Milton Keynes winning the game 1-0 move up into 3rd position behind Leyton Orient WFC. AFC Wimbledon despite the set back remain 14 points clear at the top of the table.

 Leyton Orient WFC took all 3 points ta home on Sunday to climb above Ipswich Town Ladies into 2nd spot in the FAWPL South East Division One table. Were hosting Norfolk side, Norwich City Ladies. Leyton Orient getting off to a fantastic start going 1-0 up inside the 1st minute top scorer Sophie Le Marchand on target. 10 minutes later Leyton Orient were presented with an opportunity to double their lead from the penalty spot Le Marchand stepping up to put the ball into the back of the net for 2-0. Le Marchand then completed a 1st half hat-trick with 4 minutes left to play to take her onto 22 goals for the season and see Leyton Orient leading 3-0. Norwich City pulled a goal back 7 minutes into the 2nd half Millie Daviss scoring to make it 3-1. On the hour Hayley Barton got on the scoresheet for Leyton Orient to see them lead 4-1 and go on to claim all 3 points.

  It was 5th versus 6th as Luton Town Ladies travelled to Cambridge United WFC on Sunday 2 points between the sides. Luton Town creating several chances in the first half but unable to breach the Cambridge United defence. The hosts continued to defend well 2nd half, going in front with Amber Cantwell scoring the goal it was enough for Cambridge United to win the match and as a result move above Luton Town into 5th position in the table.

The battle in mid-table looks incredibly close with Stevenage Ladies continuing their recent good form to close the gap to 6th placed Luton Town to just 2 points. Fresh from winning the Hertfordshire Women’s County Cup Stevenage were on the road at the weekend taking on bottom side, Haringey Borough Women. Leah Littlechild top scoring in the game got 4 more goals to her name taking her onto 14 for the season. Not quite enough to make her top scorer but amongst the contenders, Amy Makewell was also on target for a goal to take her also onto 14 but a brace from captain Donna McGuigan keeps her nose just in front with 15 so far this season. Goals to for midfielders, Chloe Gunn and Amy Josland along with an own goal to see Stevenage win 10-2. Shanice Nourrice and Jonea Peter on target with a goal each for Haringey. 

Actonians Ladies were back in league action for the 1st time in a month at home to Denham United Ladies on Sunday. A goal from Alessandra Barreca late in the 1st half seeing Actonians leading 1-0 at the break. A close contest it wasn’t till the final 10 minutes before Actonians made their lead more secure Barreca on target for her 2nd went on to complete her hat-trick 3 minutes into stoppage time scoring from the penalty spot to take her onto 17 goals for the season.
